Thomas Jefferson is a political philosopher, diplomat and the third president of the United States.

Jefferson‘s importance as one of the greatest figures in the Nation‘s history demanded a

memorial site of prominence ( 著名 ) in the Capital City equal to that occupied by the

Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial . Placing the Jefferson Memorial directly south of the White House achieved this . In the preparation of the plans for the memorial, the architect, John Russell Pope , was clearly influenced by Jefferson‘s taste as expressed in his writings and demonstrated ( 阐明 ) by his works. The circular colonnaded ( 有柱廊的 ) structure is an adaptation of the classical style that Jefferson introduced into his country. Rudolph Evans was the sculptor ( 雕刻家 ) of the bronze statue of Jefferson in the center of the memorial. The memorial was dedicated in 1943 on the 200th anniversary of Jefferson‘s

birth, four years after President Franklin Roosevelt laid the cornerstone.

The memorial appears at its most beautiful in early spring when the Japanese cherry trees

are in bloom. The trees were presented as a gift from the city of Tokyo to the city of Washington in 1912.

Some people argue that the pressures on international sportsmen and sportswomen kill the spirit of sport: the pursuit (追求) of personal excellence. Children kick a football around for fun. When they get older and play for local school teams, they become competitive but they still enjoy playing. The sportsman representing his country cannot afford to think about enjoying himself, he has to think only about winning. He is responsible for an entire nation‘s hopes and dreams.

A good example is the football World Cup. Football is the world‘s most important sport. It is even more important now that the United States is seriously taking it up. Winning the World Cup is perhaps eh greatest of international sporting success. Mention ― Argentina ‖ to someone and the chances are that he‘ll think of football. In a sense, winning the World Cup ― put Argentina on the map ‖.

Sports fans and supporters get quite irrational about the World Cup. People in England felt that their country was somehow important after they won the World Cup. Last year thousands of Scots sold their cars, and even their houses, and spent all their money traveling to Argentina, where the finals were played.

So am I arguing that international competitions kill the idea of sport? Certainly not! Do the Argentineans really believe that because eleven of their men proved the most skillful at football, their nation is better than all others? Not really. But it‘s nice to know that you won, and that in one way at least your country is best.

A. why international sport is necessary

B. what international sport is like

C. how international sport goes on

D. what disadvantages international sport has

61. Those who are against international competitions think that __________.

A, sport should not be so popular B, sport should not be competitive C, sport should be for personal purpose D. sport should be made easier 62. We can infer from the passage that the underlined word ― irrational ‖ means_________.

A. against reasonable behavior

B. having much knowledge

C. unable to understand D. eager to know

A. Argentina has the best football player

B. Argentina has become world-famous for football C. Football is very popular in Argentina

D. Argentina has begun to pay much attention to football

For new countries joining the European Union, and older ones getting used to their dark red passports, becoming ―Europeans‖ is a bit like marrying into a large, eccentric ( 古怪的 ) family. Europeans have a lot in common but it is their differences , not their similarities, that attract the attention of sociologists( 社会学家 ) and market researchers, and are more interesting.

? 35% of Germans live alone; but only 9% of Spaniards. Perhaps this explains why Spaniards lead Europe in the habit of going out for a drink. The British attend more adult evening classes than anyone else in Europe, and the

Belgians least. So it can‘t just be the dark evenings. There are no figures on how many Britons go for a drink afterwards. If there were, they might be up at the top with Spain! ?

Dutch husbands do the household shopping a lot more often than Italians or Spaniards. The French are the champion public transport commuters ( 经常往返者 ) of Europe.

LONDON (Reuters)------ Ecotourism ( 生态旅游 ) is causing a lot of damage to wildlife

and may be endangering the survival ( 生存 ) of the very animals people are flocking to see,

according to researchers.

Biologists and conservationists ( 自然环境保护论者 ) are worried because polar bears,

dolphins , penguins and other creatures are getting stressed and losing weight and some are dying.

― Evidence ( 证据 ) is growing that many animals do not react well to tourists in their

backyard,‖ New Scientist magazine said.

The immediate effects researchers have noticed are changes in behavior, heart rates , or stress

hormone (荷尔蒙)levels but they fear it could get much worse and over the long term ― could endanger the survival of the very wildlife they want to see.‖

Although money produced through ecotourism, which has been growing at about 10-30

percent a year, has major benefits for poor countries and people living in rural areas, the

Swiss-based World Conservation Union (IUCN) and some governments fear not all projects are

audited ( 审查 ) and based on environmentally friendly policies , according to the magazine.

―Transmission ( 传播 ) of disease to wildlife, or small changes to wildlife health through

disturbance of daily life or increased stress levels, while not obvious to the casual(不关心的)

observer , may translate to lower survival and breeding,‖ said Philip Seddon, of the University of

Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand.

Scientists have noticed that bottleneck dolphins along the northeastern coast of New Zealand

become nervously excited when tourist boats arrive. Similar changes in behavior have been

observed in polar bears and yellow—eyed penguins in areas visited by ecotourists are producing

smaller babies.

Conservationists are now calling for more research into the effect of ecotourism on animals

and say the industry must be developed carefully. They also want studies done before new

ecotourism projects are started.

― The animals‘ welfare should be very important because without them there will be no

ecotourism,‖ said Rochelle Constantine of72. What is the text mainly about ?

A. Many animals are dying because of lack of money.

B. There will be no ecotourism without animals

C. Ecotourism could endanger the survival of the wildlife people want to see

D. More research should be done on ecotourism.

73. We may learn from the text that __________

A. ecotourism must be developed properly

B. polar bears are losing weight without enough food

C. all the poor countries have stopped ecotourism

D. money produced through ecotoursim should be spent on wildlife

74. Which of the following if Not mentioned in the text? A. Many animals do not react well in their backyard.

B. Polar bears in areas visited by ecotourists are producing smaller babies.

C. Ecotourism has been growing at about 10-30 percent a year. D. Studies should be done before new ecotourism projects are started

75. What Rochelle Constantine said in the last paragraph implies that _____. A. if people want to get high income , they must develop ecotourism

C. animals are people‘s good friends

W: It‘s true that I have some wonderful memories. I enjoyed visiting other countries, and the

Olympics were very exciting. But I missed more important things. While other girls were growing up, I was swimming.

What can I do?

(Text 10)

Harry came to see his mother one morning while she was having her breakfast, and said to

her, ―No one

At my school likes me, Mother. The teachers don‘t .and the children don‘t .Even the cleaners and the bus drivers hate me.‖

― Well , Harry. ‖ his mother answered. Perhaps you aren‘t very nice to them. If a few people don‘t like a person. He or she may not he responsible for that; but if a lot of people don‘t, there is

usually something wrong, and that person really needs to change.‖

― I ?m not old to change.‖ Harry said, ― I don‘t want to go to school.‖

― Don‘t be silly, Harry ,‖ his mother said , going to the garage to get he car out.‖ You have to go. You‘re quite well, and you still have a lot of things to learn, And besides that, you‘re the headmaster of the school.‖

One possible version:

Dear editor, 82. Bus → Buses

I am writing to tell you about the discussion we‘ve had about whether it is necessary for middle school students to carry mobile phones to school.

The majority of the students think it is more convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and classmates if they have a mobile phone. And what‘s more, it‘s a fashion.

However , most teachers think that middle school students are not old enough to control themselves. It is a waste of time for students to play games and send messages to each other by mobile phone . And it‘s easy to cause the students to vie with each other. If necessary they can make phone calls by using public phones on the campus.

In my opinion, following the fashion is understandable. But as middle school students, we should put all our heart into our studies.

truly

One possible version:

Dear Editor,

I am writing to tell you about a discussion we‘ve had about whether students of Senior 3 should take physical exercise. As you know , every coin has two sides. 55% of the students think they should take all kinks of exercise every day, such as doing morning exercises, playing table tennis and playing basketball, but not spend to much time on them. As a proverb says, ―All work

and no play makes Jack a dull boy.‖ Exercise builds their body and reduces lots of diseases. Sports let them have a good rest so that their study will be more effective.

On the other hand ,45% students believe taking exercise is a waste of time and tiring. After having sports, they are too excited for a long time to pay attention to their lessons. And it‘s possible to be hurt in sports.

Yours sincerely,

Li hua
