这部投资七千万美元的影片根据丹尼尔·华莱士（Daniel Wallace）19xx年同名畅销小说改编，是导演蒂姆·伯顿的第10部电影。

本片名《大鱼》（Big Fish）有多重隐喻。其一，“big fish story”为美国俗语，意为有趣的或夸张的童话，弥天大谎；其二是爱德华叙述中有举世无双的鲶鱼；其三，爱德华认为自己在阿拉巴马州的小镇是“小池塘里的大鱼”，要出门闯荡。

《加勒比海盗》系列可以说是百分之百的原创，编剧特里·罗西奥(Terry Rossio)和特德·艾利奥特(Ted Elliott)曾一手创造出《怪物史莱克》中那童话般优美的幻想世界，而他们的灵感之源则来自于迪斯尼主题公园中一项好玩的经典游乐设施??
