The Reading Report of The Adventure of Tom Sawyer

Published in 1876, The Adventure of Tom Sawyer was a

masterpiece written by the notable American novelist, Mark

Twain. Born on November 30, 1835 in a village in Florida, Missouri and passed away on April 21, 1910, Mark Twain witnessed the development of American from a free capitalist country to an

imperialist one, which shed light onto the transparent changes of his thoughts and works during his whole life. Mark Twain, also the author of The Adventure of Huckleberry Finn and The Million Pound Note, was acknowledged as the founder of American critical realistic literature and even “Lincoln in American

literature”.

The protagonist, Tom Sawyer’s life in this novel was filled with romance and pleasure. His happiness always endured for quite a long time whereas his worry tended to pass within minutes. He was a typical kindhearted, bravery and mischievous boy who thought highly of Robin Hood and had a great passion for

adventures. Naughty as he was, Tom Sawyer just followed his heart and did whatever he could to get rid of shackles. Thus I

couldn’t see what is wrong with his struggling for freedom. After

his parents’ death when he was still a child, Tom started being

taken care of and brought up by his aunt, Polly. As a matter of fact, Tom was always absent-minded at class because he loathed

attending school. Consequently, most of the time he skipped

classes, aiming to have fun with his best friend Huckleberry Finn. Additionally, he later fell in love with Becky Thatcher, the daughter of the judge Thatcher and endeavored to go after her by all means. As we expected, Aunt Polly felt deeply upset about Tom’s

unreasonable behaviors. It is obvious that Tom Sawyer was a

combination of several characters in this book. Once, Tom went to a tomb and surprisingly discovered a case of murder in which Indian Joe was so irritated in a quarrel that he killed Robinson. Besides, being drunk and beaten by Joe, Porter immediately fell down in a faint. As a result, Joe put the knife in Porter’s hand,

meaning to impute the crime to Porter so as to escape punishment. Unexpectedly, Huckleberry was also on the spot and sighted the murder. Out of fear and scare, they immediately swore to keep it a strict secret forever. When reading this part, I considered Tom to be a timid as well as dishonesty boy. However, what was going to happen changed my opinion completely. Tom was extremely guilty and thought it was unfair to Porter. So He finally revealed the truth to the public, which promptly proved Porter’s innocence.

Tom’s act of justice made a favorable impression on me. From this matter, I could easily come to the conclusion that Tom was a boy of righteousness and honesty

.

In general, the main content of the novel is the growth experience of Tom Sawyer. Actually, the rich description of Tom’s growth experience conveys Mark Twain’s memory of the delightful

childhood. Tom, an intelligent, active and courageous boy, is an

authentic depiction of the village children in American of the same background at that time. Through the description of the adventure of Tom Sawyer, this book subtly satires and criticizes many

phenomena of American society, such as the vulgar social customs, the hypocritical religious ritual as well as the rigid school

education. For these reasons, Tom Sawyer is one of the most famous characters in the history of American literature, making The Adventure of Tom Sawyer one of the greatest children’s

literature works all over the world.

I highly recommend you to read this book because it is exactly an excellent novel that worth reading.
