Walden

Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), the author of Walden, was born in Concord, Massachusetts. He was an American writer and thinker, and graduated from Harvard University. He made friends with Emerson when he was a student, and he learned a lot from him. At the same time he stared writing by the influence of Emerson. He wrote many books and papers among his life, and the most impressed and famous one is On Civil Disobedience which was published in 1848. Later, in 1854,Walden was published, but it was not as impressed as On Civil Disobedience. But as time went by, it was accepted by more and more people. His life is up and down. Though he just stayed in the jail for a day he thought a lot about the society and the people, and he wrote the famous Paper: Resistance to Civil Government.

When I got the book, I first saw the three words,Lonely , Solitude , Wisdom in the cover . Thoreau lived in Walden for almost a half and two years. So Walden records his life and thoughts lived in Walden alone in the woods by the Walden Pond. In this book he wrote these parts: Economy, Where I lived, and What I lived for, Reading, Sounds, Solitude, Visitor, the Village, and the Pond in winter,. In the economy part he wrote what he did and thought about his money by the way describing what he saw and experience to explain it. “One generation abandons the enterprises of another like stranded vessels” “all change is a miracle to contemplate, but it is a miracle which is taking place every instant” When a new generation become the main support of the society, they will create many new things and new ideas to strengthen their status and power ,and control the main thought of the public. Even a small change will make a big difference of the world. When the young and new generation take some new measures to support themselves, they do change the next generation. So the new generation should take care of what they do, and think twice before making great changes.

Where I lived, and What I lived for. “We must learn to reawaken and keep ourselves awake, not by mechanical aids, but by an infinite expectation of the dawn, which does not forsake us in our soundest sleep. I know of no more encouraging fact

than the unquestionable ability of man to elevate his life by a conscious endeavor.” In this part I got the information that we must keep a clear mind and do no matter what we do by heart. Every morning we wake up, it is a new day, at this time we should enjoy the fresh air, and have the feeling of turning over a new loaf. When we have the feeling and wake everyday all by our strong will, we will feel easy and relaxed the whole day. So we would not call the morning “the painful morning” anymore.

Reading.” Our reading, our conversation and thinking, are all on a very low, worthy only of pygmies and manikins” David Thoreau thought that what we read now only as far as Easy Reading, the primers and class-books, and when left school, we read Little Reading and story books. Now these kinds of books make us boring and narrow of other fields. Besides, what we are learning at school, we should also read a large rang of books, and open our eyes to another world we have never seen by following the author idea and feet. Only in this way can we call what we are doing is reading.

Sounds . “What recommends commerce to me is its enterprise and bravery. It does not clasp its hand and pray to Jupiter. I see these men every day go about their business with more or less courage and content, doing more even than they suspect, and perchance better employed than they could have consciously devised.” “Commerce is unexpectedly confident and serene, alert, adventurous, and unwearied. It is very natural in its methods withal, far more so than many fantastic enterprises and sentimental experiments, and hence its singular success.” Commerce does bring us many benefits and make our life convenient, makes many impossible become possible. Nowadays, most of us only consider the profit of the commerce but ignore the damage. The author often see the train come and go between the countryside and cities, it bring the villagers what they need and take the sources of the village such as woods, coal, mineral, and some other limited sources. Seeing it, we must consider the commerce by two sides, and make the sources fully use. At the same time, we must consider the sustainable development, and make our nature balance.

Solitude. :Yet I experiences sometimes that the most sweet and tender, the most innocent and encouraging society may be found in any natural object, even for the

poor misanthrope and most melancholy man. There can be no very black melancholy yet such a storm but it was Aeolian music to a healthy and innocent ear.” Living in the nature you can feel solitude, but the most you feel about living in it is the peace of your heart sound of nature. We live in big cities, most of us even do not know what our neighbors are, how poor we are. We will have the feeling that no exertion of the legs can bring two minds much nearer to one another. But when we set ourselves in the nature we can feel the sweet and friendly of the nature, and think about our life clearly. Enjoy the solitude, you can see and feel more about the nature and your real life.

Visitors. Referred to this standard, speech is for the convenience of those who are hard of hearing; but there are many fine things which we cannot say if we have to shout.” Sometimes we may gather together to discuss something we are interested in or something that is important, we may have different opinions, and the best way to solve it is not shout to support your idea but express it patiently. In this way we will have a good and efficient meeting.

The Village. “I am convinced, that if all men were to live simply as I then did, thieving and robbery would be unknown.” The village life is simple and people all are simple, so their environment is also peace, it set an example for us, live simple, you will be happier.

In a ward , about the Walden, all I can feel now is make my heart peace and think more about my life, so that I will live happy and clear-headed. Every man is the lord of a realm besides which the earthly empire of the Czar is but petty state, a hummock left by the ice. Do not let tradition and conformity become the obstacle of your thinking. Go straight in the direction of your dream, and be confident of yourself, you will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. Never think too much about wealth, try to fill yourself with something that necessary of our soul. Try to be close to the nature, and be a careful man to find something that important to you or interesting to you. Make your heart peace and do everything think twice. Make your life easer and be a helpful man to other people. And there is an incessant influx of novelty into the world, the only thing we should do is be clear of yourself and know

what you really want.

Gone with the Wind Book Review

This week I read the book called Gone with the Wind which is written by the American female writer Margaret Mitchell. It is said that she spent 10 years to finish this book. This is a perfect work. The plot is full of twists and turns, and the characters are vivid. I very love this book and the heroine of this book.

Scarlett O’Hara, a pretty Southern beauty, lived on Tara, a large plantation in Georgia. Before the war, she was very glamorous and full of passion that only belonged to the young. All gentle men were attracted by her charm. But she was so pride that she felt no one but Ashley Wilkes. In that time, she just liked a wild princess. And she did what she wanted to do and tried to get what she wanted. She was so brave and upright to her heart. To be honest, I admit that Scarlett was so sly in some aspects. But that was the most important thing that helped her survived in that world. What’s more, nobility also had another ugly faces. But they never showed them and always went with the stream. Compared with Scarlett who constantly broke the traditional thinking, they were more hypocritical and harehearted, weren’t they? During the Civil War, Scarlett left her hometown to Atlantic alone. Obviously her main purpose was to meet Ashley who had gone to the war. She loved him all the time although he had married another woman. From there, we also can see Scarlett’s nerve and her persistence to seek true love. In Atlantic, she promised Ashley to stay here to take care of his pregnant wife Melanie Hamilton. Some times Scarlett just liked a demon, because she might try to achieve her goals at any costs or by all means. (I say this not because I dislike her but just say the truth.) To be honest, Scarlett could have left Melanie who had taken away her beloved Ashley behind and ran for her life. If she had done so, she might be able to marry Ashley after Melanie’s death. However she didn’t do so. I’m thinking that maybe she loved Ashley so much that she was willing to do anything for Ashley or Melanie’ goodness made her have no heart to do so. One night the Yankees captured Atlanta and set fire to the city. While Melanie had just gave birth to a son. But they had to escape the city right now. So Scarlett turned to Rhett Butler who fell in love with Scarlett at the first sight for help. Fortunately they escaped Atlantic successfully. But the way to home was not easy. Rhett left them in the half way. Scarlett had to face all the difficulties by her own. Hunger, cold, fatigue and the threat of Yankees tortured them. However in Scarlett’s dictionary, there was no ‘give up’. Or maybe the severer the situation is, the more powerful Scarlett was. From beginning to end, Scarlett never gave up and they reached Scarlrtt’s home Tara finally.

Shouldn’t we praise Scarlett for her nerve and determination? However when she got home, she found that her mother had done, his father insane, and sisters week. In addition, Yankees had taken away all of their assets and food. The whole family was driven to the last ditch. However Scarlett never chose to give up. She just like the poison rose in the desert, which was so beautiful, but in order to survive she can be cure. She vowed ‘If I have to lie, steal, cheat or kill, as God as my witness, I'll never be hungry again!’ I was deeply shocked by her determination and sprit. I also believed that she must be able to make it. In fact, she did make it. She still did what she wanted to do and tried to get what she wanted just like before. She managed to get money to keep Tara by all means and did many bad things. She almost abandoned her conscience and always wore face masks. She struggled in the world all the time just as the word that she said ‘Now I find myself in a world which for me is worse than death, a world in which there is no place for me.’ Frankly speaking I don’t know it was what that supported Scarlett to be so strong. Some people said it was the land of Tara. Is it real? I do not know. In the end, Scarlett got all that she waned but true love. Rhett who loved Scarlett all the time and had done many things for her left her in the final. Maybe this was the cost of her power. In any case Scarlett was a very cool and unusual girl. I like and admire her.

Another lady I want to say is Melanie Hamilton Ashley’s wife. If we regard Scarlett as a demon, then we regard Melanie as an angel. She was tolerant, kindhearted, and unsophisticated. She never saw the ugliness of life. Although being in the unsteady time, she never lost her pure heart. She was the opposite Scarlett. But she loved Scarlett and never suspected her. She always stood by Scarlett’s side, supported her and tried her best to help her. I was moved by her empressements. She was the only one who wasn’t polluted by the misery. She was so beautiful and shinny just like the hope. I was so sad that she died in the end. Before dying she just cared about her husband and Scarlett, which made my eyes full of tears. She was so great.

The last one who gave me deep impression was Rhett Butler. His love to Scarlett was so deep. He knew Scarlett never loved him, but he still gave all his love to her. Maybe he was just too stupid. Scarlett was a poison rose; everyone around her would get hurt. Rhett wasn’t an exception. When he lost everything and could not afford hurt any more, he eventually left Scarlett. It was so pathetic. Maybe Scarlett was bound to be alone for her left life.

But nothing can defeat Scarlett as her word ‘Home. I'll go home. And I'll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.’
