My husband and children think they are very lucky that they are living and that it’s Christmas again. They can’t see that we live on a dirty street in a dirty house among people who aren’t much good. But Jonhnny and children can’t see this. What a pity it is that our neighbours have to make happiness out of all this dirt. I decided that my children must get out of this. The money that we’ve saved isn’t nearly enough.
The McGaritys have money but they are so proud. They the poor. The McGarity girl just yesterday stood out there in the street eating from a bag of candy while a ring of hungry children watched her. I saw those children looking at her and crying in their hearts; and when she couldn’t eat any more she threw the rest down the sewer(下水道).Why, is it only because they have money? There is more to happiness than money in the world, isn’t there?

Proverbs are quite common in spoken English. We do not normally put them in a composition or letter. Sometimes it is helpful if you know what common proverbs mean. Here are a few examples:
(1) “Once bitten, twice shy.” If a dog bites me, I shall be twice as careful in future when I see it. This proverb is also used to apply to many things and not only to dogs. If you have been cheated at a shop, you will not go to the same shop again.
(2) “ A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.” If I am a hunter, trying to catch birds, it is better to catch one bird than to see two birds in a bush but not be able to catch them. Thus this means that what you have already got is better than the chance of being able to get something bigger in future.
2010年高中自主招生英语第7页(共15页)
(3) “Too many cooks the broth(soup).” When too many people do something, they get in each other’s way and do a bad job.
(4) “To pour oil on troubled waters.” is to try to calm things down. Oil is lighter than water. If a ship is in trouble at sea, another ship may come to help it. The second ship can send small boats to rescue people. However, it may first pour oil on the sea to make the sea less rough.
(5) “Don’t be a dog in a manger(槽).”means “Don’t be selfish(自私的).” In a stable(马房), the manger is the place where the horse’s food is put. Sometimes a dog will sleep in the manger and bark when a horse comes to get its food. The dog does not want to eat the hay in the manger but it will not let the horse eat it.
(6) “He is sitting on the fence.” Means that somebody will not say whether he is in favor of a plan or against it. He is sitting on a fence between two opposing sides, perhaps waiting to see which side will win.
(7) “He who pays the piper calls the tune.” A piper is a musician. The man who employs or pays a musician can say what tunes the man will play. Thus this means that if a man provides the money for a plan, he can say how it will be carried out.
(8) “You can’t get blood out of a stone.” means that you cannot get something from a person who has not got any of the things you want.e.g. You cannot get a million dollars from a poor man.
71. Peter had a bicycle which was much too small for him but he did not want to let
his younger brother ride on it. His mother was angry and said to him:_______.
A. You can’t get blood out of a stone B. Don’t be a dog in a manger
C. The early bird gets the worm D. Don’t be a horse in the manger

A. pouring oil on troubled waters B. getting blood out of a stone

73.Mr Wang paid for a new school. Some people did not like the design of the school but they did not argue with Mr Wang because_________.
A. he was sitting on the fence
B. once bitten, twice shy

Hawaiian holidays are often seen as a holiday of a lifetime and if you want to have the most amazing views to add to your holiday memories then the volcanoes(火山)are a must to visit. Hawaii is a growing group of islands as a result of the volcano action; it is also the youngest inhabited land mass.
Kilauea is the most active and famous in Hawaii’s volcanic history. It has an altitude of four thousand feet about sea level. It last erupted in 1983 and is sacred to the islanders.
In Hawaii there is a National Park for volcano watching. Anyone can go and stay there. It is a great place for camping and hiking and has unpredictable weather and a wet atmosphere, which in turn creates a rich land and an amazing flourishing environment for many different types of wildlife. In an effort to maintain and protect this unique ecosystem the Hawaiian authorities have organized for foreign plants, animals and insects to be removed from the envirnment in fear that they may unbalance to islands ecosystem and kill off some of the rarest living organisms in the world.
Volcanic eruptions can happen at any time and it is important to always follow the instructions of your guide. If you are keen to see the lava, there are lava viewing opportunities which can be organized through the Kilauea visitor centre. As these areas change all the time and the safety of each area is watched out by the park, it is essential that you follow these guidelines and never enter areas which are currently 2010年高中自主招生英语第9页(共15页)

Will Christmas Replace the Spring Festival?
Christmas arouses increasing attention year by year in China. Christmas cards become popular with students. People hold Christmas parites and exchange Christmas are on. Meanwhite the Spring Festival is less appealing to youngsters. 2010年高中自主招生英语第14页(共15页)
Thus some people wonder whether Christmas will replace the Spring Festival.
This worry is fairly unneccessary. Why? One reason lies in that Christmas only affects Christmas, college student and joint-venture workers. Another reason is that Christmas is mostly celebrated in cities. Few people in countryside show extreme interest in this exotic festival. By contrast, the Spring Festival is the most influential traditional festival in every family.
I think, it is natural that with increasing exchange with the West, a lot of Western holidays have been gradually introduced into China. For us Chinese we should never neglect or even discard our own traditional festival. For centuries Chinese have observed this traditional holiday to welcoma the beginning of a new year. And we will treasure the Spring Festival forever.
