Data communication systems:
(1) A local area network (LAN) is a computer network that interconnects
computers in a limited area such as a home, school, computer laboratory, or office building. The defining characteristics of LANs, in contrast to wide area networks (WANs), include their usually higher data-transfer rates, smaller geographic area, and lack of a need for leased telecommunication lines. At the higher layers, the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) has become the standard. Smaller LANs generally consist of one or more switches linked to each other, often at least one is connected to a router, cable modem, or ADSL modem for Internet access.
(2) A wide area network (WAN) is a telecommunication network that covers a
broad area (i.e., any network that links across metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries). Business and government entities utilize WANs to relay data among employees, clients, buyers, and suppliers from various geographical locations. In essence this mode of telecommunication allows a business to effectively carry out its daily function regardless of location.WANs are used to connect LANs and other types of networks together, so that users and computers in one location can communicate with users and computers in other locations. Transmission rates usually range from 1200 bit/s to 24 Mbit/s, although some connections such as ATM and Leased lines can reach speeds greater than 156 Mbit/s.
(3) The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that
use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to serve billions of users worldwide. It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks, of local to global scope, that are linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless and optical networking technologies. The Internet carries a vast range of information resources and services, such as the inter-linked hypertext documents of the
World Wide Web (WWW) and the infrastructure to support email.Online shopping has boomed both for major retail outlets and small artisans and traders. Business-to-business and financial services on the Internet affect supply chains across entire industries.
Benefit and Function
1. LAN:
(1) For managers:
i. Local area network will link every computer in ICT Company so that
from top manager to first-line manager can communicate better.
ii.
iii. Managers can access their files from any workstation. Files can be backed up more easily by managers when they are all on a
central fileserver rather than when they are scattered across a number of independent workstations.
(2) For ICT:
i. Files can be stored on a central computer (the file server) allowing data
to be shared throughout ICT Company.
ii. Software and resources can be centrally managed by ICT Company’s
managers.
iii. Expensive devices such as laser printers or scanners can be shared in
ICT Company.
2. WAN
(1) For Managers
i. WAN is a great way to meet up with suppliers and customerswho are
interested in ICT Company’s products for managers.
ii. WAN Network managers can communicate with different networks
whose"net id" is unique and share the files each other.
iii. According to WAN provides the facility to communicate in long
distance for the purposes of sharing information for other district managers.
(2) For ICT
i. Often these services are not available off-line or cost more so that ICT
Company can save large expenses to improve the situation of balance sheet and cash flow.
ii. Everyone on the network can use the same data. This avoids problems
where some users may have older information than others for ICT. iii. Expensive things can be shared by all the computers on the network
without having to buy a different peripheral for each computer in ICT.
3. Internet:
(1) For Mangers
i.
ii.
iii. Faster communication for managers. Huge information resources. Social Networking.
(2) For ICT
i.
ii. It facilitate the suppliers and customers to share ICT’s information. Emailis excellent for keeping in touch with suppliers and customers of
ICT Company. It is freewhen compared to telephone, fax and postal services.
iii. The internet is a very effective way to buy and sell products all over
world for ICT Company.
New information communication technology:
(1) Wi-Fi is a mechanism for wirelessly connecting electronic devices. A device enabled with Wi-Fi, such as a personal computer, video game console, smartphone, tablet, or digital audio player, can connect to the Internet via a wireless network access point. An access point (or hotspot) has a range of about 20 meters (65 ft) indoors and a greater range outdoors. Multiple overlapping access points can cover large areas.
Firstly, for ICT Company, Wi-Fi network allows access from anywhere in the building. This allows ICTmanagers to take a laptop from an office to the conference room without losing network connectivity.
Secondly, managers, particularly those who have to travel, are less likely to experience dead time when they cannot work. So Wi-Fi allows managers in ICT to better balance their work and personal lives by giving them more options on when and where they can work.
(2) The term broadband refers to a telecommunications signal or device of greater bandwidth, in some sense, than another standard or usual signal or device (and the broader the band, the greater the capacity for traffic).
Firstly, broadband connection speed is up to 100 times faster than dialup connection so that ICT can download pictures files, software in seconds or minutes instead of hours.
Secondly,it does not affect the phone line. For DSL internet access, ICT can use the same phone line for both voice/fax and data transmission. In either case, the phone line is not occupied while managers are connected to the internet.
