Conversation One

M: Hi Helen. What do you think of our class in children’s literature?

W: It looks pretty good. I was surprised to see you in there. Are you also majoring in elementary education?

M: No, I’m not. But as a psychology major, I can use this to fulfill the requirements in developmental psychology.

W: Have you finished the first assignment yet?

M: Not yet. I just got the book today. How about you?

W: I started this afternoon. It’s great fun reading those wonderful children’s stories by Dr. Hughes.

M: Dr. Hughes? I didn’t remember seeing his name on the reading list.

W: His full name is Theodore Hughes Gazzel. That’s how he is listed on the bibliography. Dr. Hughes is his pen name.

M: I love reading those stories as a child. It’s been interesting now to read them from a different perspective. I guess they all give me a good idea on how children think.

W: Those stories are also great for class use.

M: How is that?

W: Well, take a typical Dr. Hughes’ book like The Cat in a Hat. It has a controlled vocabulary of about only 200 words.

M: So, that means the children get a lot of practice, using a small number of words over and over.

W: Exactly. In fact, The Cat in a Hat is written primarily to show how a controlled vocabulary reading could also be interesting and fun.

M: Well, it sounds like it is also going to be interesting and fun. I’ll get started on those readings tonight.

Questions 19 to 22 are based on the conversation you have just heard.

19. What is Helen’s major field of study?

21. Who are Dr. Hughes and Theodore Gazzel?

His full name is Theodore Hughes Gazzel. Dr. Hughes is his pen name.

22. When does the conversation probably take place?

解析】选[A]。 Have you finished the first assignment yet?

Conversation Two

M: How is your term paper coming along?

W: I have just finished the draft, and handed it in to Miss Harper.

M: Wow, you are really a doer. I planned to start writing the main body today. What did Miss Harper say about your draft?

W: Well, she suggested I reconsider the whole structure of my paper, as she saw no links between Chapter Three and the whole theme.

M: Oh, so what are you going to do?

W: Miss Harper advised me to delete Chapter Three, and enrich the other chapters. She also recommended a few books. I think that will be of great help. And I’m going to the library this afternoon.

M: I wish I could have Miss Harper be my supervisor. She tends to help her students with patience.

W: Who is your supervisor, then?

M: Mr. Simpson. You should know that he is famous for being strict, and rather picky.

W: In my opinion, Mr. Simpson is quite responsible, though sometimes he seems to be too direct. All in all, he is quite nice.

M: If you were in my shoes, I’m sure you wouldn’t say so. Anyway, I have revised the outline at least three times to meet his requirements. That’s why I fall far behind you.

W: Just as the saying goes, a strict master brings up accomplished disciples. You are lucky enough to have Mr. Simpson be your supervisor.

M: You’ve got a point there. Do you mind my going to the library with you together? Maybe you could give me some advice on writing the term paper.

W: Of course not. I’ll gladly do what I can to help.

点睛】[D]中Help…with the paper是对give…some advice on writing the term paper的同义转述。

Section B

Passage One

There is one foreign product the Japanese are buying faster than others and its popularity has caused an uneasy feeling among many Japanese.

That product is foreign words. Gairaigo — words that come from outside — have been part of the Japanese language for centuries. Mostly borrowed from English and Chinese, these terms are often changed into forms no longer understood by native speakers.

But in the last few years the trickle of foreign words has become a flood, and people fear the increasing use of foreign words is making it hard for the Japanese to understand each other and could lead to many people forgetting the good qualities of traditional Japanese.

“The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new,” says university lecturer and writer Takashi Saito. “By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new, which makes it easier for the media to pick up.”

“Experts often study abroad and use English terms when they speak with people in their own fields. Those terms are then included in government white papers,” said Muturo Kai, president of the National Language Research Institute. “Foreign words find their way easily into announcements made to the general public, when they should really be explained in Japanese.”

Against the flow of new words, many Japanese are turning back to the study of their own language. Saito’s Japanese to Be Read Aloud is one of the many language books that are now flying off booksellers’ shelves.

“We are expecting to sell the books to young people,” said the writer, “but it turns out they are more popular with the older generation, who seem uneasy about the future of the Japanese.”

Questions 26 to 29 are based on the passage you have just heard.

26. What advantage do foreign words have over traditional Japanese terms?

Foreign words, suited for announcements, make new subject easier等表明,本题可能与外来词的优点有关。 By using a foreign word you can make a subject seem new…

[B]中的sound new对应的是seem new。

27. What do Takashi Saito say about Japanese people?

The popularity of foreign words is part of the Japanese interest in anything new可知,Takashi Saito认为日本人是很乐意学习新知识的,故答案为[C]。

[C]的内容是对the Japanese interest in anything new的同义转述。

28. Which plays an important part in the spread of foreign words?

解析】选[D]。短文中提到的…which makes it easier for the media to pick up和Those terms are then included in government white papers表明,媒体和政府白皮书在外来词的传播上起到了很重要的作用,故答案为[D]。

点睛】问题中的the spread of foreign words是听音重点。

29. What do we know about the book Japanese to Be Read Aloud?

解析】选[A]。 Saito’s Japanese to Be Read Aloud is one of many language books that are now flying off booksellers’ shelves.可知,Japanese to Be Read Aloud这本书在日本很畅销,故答案为[A]。

Japanese to Be Read Aloud是听音重点。

Passage Two

Members of the working class have blue-collar jobs. They are construction workers, truck drivers, mechanics, steel workers, electricians, and the like. What makes this class differ from the lower class is, first, longer periods of employment — and therefore, more fixed incomes — and, second, employment in skilled or semi-skilled occupations, not unskilled ones. Although unemployment hits all levels of the American economy, including those of skilled and semi-skilled workers, it is most common at the bottom of the class structure and increasingly less common at each level upward. They consider themselves to be respectable and hard-working and they look down upon members of the “lower” class, whom they often consider to be lazy, dishonest, and too ready to exploit public assistance.

Most people in the working class have at least high-school education. Many have some experience of college (especially community college), though few are college graduates. Unionization has helped the working class, but a rapidly changing economy and frequent periods of high unemployment make it difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly. Purchasing a house for people in this class is extremely difficult, although a certain percentage may receive houses from their parents. (Home-owning rises with social class.)

A greater number of the members of the working class take relatively little satisfaction in their jobs, because much of their work is ordinary and boring. As a result, they seek their main satisfaction in recreational activities. Many members of this class would like to earn enough money to leave their jobs and start their own businesses, though few make it. Many place their expectations on their children, hoping that they at least will rise in the ladder of success, American style.

Questions 30 to 32 are based on the passage you have just heard.

30. What is the feature of the working class?

由短文中提到的employment in skilled or semi-skilled occupations可知,答案为[D]。

31. What is said about most people in the working class?

短文中的difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly表明,工人的储蓄很难大幅增加,故答案为[D]。

点睛】[D]的内容是对difficult for most of its members to be able to increase their savings greatly的同义转述。

32. Why are many members from the working class not satisfied with their jobs?

解析】选[C]。短文中提到because much of their work is ordinary and boring,由此可知,他们对工作不满意是因为工作普通、枯燥,即他们对工作不感兴趣,故答案为[C]。

Passage Three

At one time, computers were expected largely to remove the need for paper copies of documents because they could be stored electronically. But for all the texts that are written, stored and sent electronically, a lot of them are still ending up on paper.

It is difficult to measure the quantity of paper used as a result of use of Internet-connected computers, although just about anyone who works in an office can tell you that when e-mail is introduced, the printers start working overtime. “I feel in my bones this revolution is causing more trees to be cut down,” says Ted Smith of the Earth Village Organization.

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself, which sees printing as one of its most promising new markets. Several Internet companies have been set up to help small businesses print quality documents from a computer. Earlier this week, Hewlett Packard Company announced a plan to develop new technologies that will enable people to print even more so they can get a hard copy of a business document, a medical record or just a one-line e-mail, even if they are nowhere near a computer. As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet, the greater demand for printers.

Does all this mean environmental concerns have been forgotten? Some activists suggest people have been led to believe that a lot of dangers to the environment have gone away.

“I guess people believe that the problem is taken care of because of recycling,” said Kelly Quirke, director of the Rainforest Action Network in San Francisco. Yet Quirke is hopeful that high-tech may also prove helpful. He says printers that print on both sides are growing in popularity. The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood, such as agricultural waste.

Questions 33 to 35 are based on the passage you have just heard.

33. What is the growing demand for paper in recent years largely due to?

Perhaps the best sign of how computer and Internet use pushes up demand for paper comes from the high-tech industry itself可知,近年来对纸的需求量渐增是因为电脑和因特网的使用增加,故答案为[C]。

点睛】短文中提到的pushes up demand for paper与问题中的growing demand for paper对应。

34. What do environmentalists believe one possible way of dealing with the paper situation?

解析】选[B]。选项中的plant more...trees,find new materials, develop new printers等表明,本题可能考查解决办法。 The action group has also found acceptable paper made from materials other than wood可知,环境保护者相信改变用纸状况的一种可能的方法是找到新的造纸材料,故答案为[B]。

点睛】other than意为“除了”。

35. Why has Hewlett Packard Company decided to develop new technologies?

解析】 选[A]。 As the company sees it, the more use of the Internet, the greater demand for printers可知,Hewlett Packard发展新技术是因为看到了市场对打印机需求的增加,故答案为[A]。
