Introduction

Many western writers concern about the inequality of female and contribute a lot to feminism development through their works and movements. In her masterpiece Defending for women's rights ,Mary Wollstonecraft points out that women are not inherently inferior to men, it will only reveal when they lack enough education ,She believes that men and women have the same moral standards and advocated a the rational and equal education between men and women. (Mary Wollstonecraft, 1792) Simon De beauvoir suggests that "women are formed" in The second sex , later making important influence to the whole world from the aspects of concepts and methods . (Simon DE beauvoir, 1949) In A room of my own ,Woolf points out that women will gain creative freedom and liberty with the economic independence. (Virginia Woolf, 1989:43), Engels in the work Anthology of Marx and Engels , saying: "the degree of women's liberation is a natural measure for universal liberation in any society." (Marx, Engels, 1995:1995) ,Later,Kate Miller launched important work Sex politics in the 70s, revealing male control in patriarchy society mainly from female image and pointing out that women have to crush patriarchal social structure to further feminism development . (Kate Miller, 1970)

In domestic,Liu Huiying describes female's attachment to men, criticized patriarchal and advocates the respect for female consciousness. (Liu Huiying, 1996:57) Meng Yue, Dai Jinhua's historic work Came to the Earth's Surface is the first systematic monograph researching Chinese modern female literature through feminism. They point out that since the matriarchal society replace patriarchal society, the male-dominated society implement and oppress female with mandatory measures such as political, economic and ethical value and press into the bottom society. It deeply analysizes the social background of female characteristics, and has a broad influence on feminism development. (Meng Yue, Dai Jinhua, 2004). Dong meizhen , by comparing feminist science of different schools ,she criticizes the traditional science and put forward a new idea of "feminist science". (dong meizhen, 2010) Based on the previous research, feminism has made great progress and achievements

after a long-term development, but still there exist tragic issues requiring to be promoted with the right and equality in the social status.

1.Introduction of feminism

1.1. Origin and definition of feminism

Feminism originated from the west, which is interpreted as a social theory and political movement predominantly coming from female experience .the word feminism which means women's liberation originated in France, then crossed to the Britain and the United States, getting popular gradually . In the west,it originally refered to the equal pursuit between men and women and the first thing was to fight for right to vote. Western women mostly had the equal political rights during the 20th century, but not equal with men in the social life with the traditional views existed . Feminists began to realize that there exist issues of gender power, subsequently the feminism movement emphasized more on gender analysis. Feminism is a combination of theory and practice,a equal ideology and belief between men and women, aiming at fight against all the inequality including gender discrimination.

The concept of feminism in Longman dictionary is the belief that women should have equal political, social, sexual, intellectual and economic rights to men. It involves various movements, theories and philosophies, all concerned with issues of gender difference, advocating equality for women and campaigning for women's rights and interests.

1.2. Development of feminism

Feminism can be divided into the following three waves.

The first wave refers to the feminism movement from the 18th century to the early 20th centuries, mainly dealing with the women's suffrage originated from Bourgeois revolution in France and the enlightenment.

The second wave (from the beginning of the 20th century to the 1960s) is the most important stage of feminism in the west. Feminists found that while women fight for equality in the field of political and economic and had made obvious achievement,

vi 1

the unequal position of women in social life had not been fundamentally improved. It can be diveded into three schools.

The third wave refers to postmodern feminism. When facing serious social consequences caused by"sexual liberation", feminists begin to rethink. On one side, they affirmed the achievements of the feminist movement ,protecting women's social rights and interests , while on the other side the feminists try to overturn the traditional family mode.

2.William Faulkner and A Rose for Emily

2.1 William Faulkner

William Faulkner is a very famous writer in the 20th century American literature, a major figure in the contemporary American literature and is considered as one of the most important writers of the southern literature in the United States .He was was born in Albany, Mississippi on September 25, 1897,when he was four or five years old,his family moved to Oxford,Mississippi, where he lived for the rest of his life .He wrote 19 novels and more than 100 short stories in his life ,and largely during most famous for the novel the sound and the fury, which made him win the Nobel prize in 1949. In addition to this, his short stories draw the attention of the critics with time passing by,and he is good at describing the local conditions and customs of the southern United States. In his works, Faulkner expresses his understanding and awareness of the world with intricate, unduplicate narrative methods. With its unique narrative style and profound theme, his short novel greatly impact on the reader's mind, establishing his important position in the world literature. Guerin said :" Feminist literary critics try to explain how power imbalances due to gender in a given culture are reflected in or challenged by literary texts. ( Guerin,1965, 196 )As a representative of southern writer, William Faulkner takes his hometown Lafitte as the prototype and invents "yoknapatawpha county",His novel ,with its distinctive theme, the bold innovative writing style and superb writing skills, make an incisive and vivid portray to the decline of the southern history and tragedy fate .He creates and depictes

vii 1

different female characters resisting oppression and cruelity from the social world ,reflecting the social reality in the South during the period of American Civil War .

2.2.A Rose for Emily

A rose for Emily is a short story written by William Faulker, first published in the April 30,1931 issue of Forum, taking place in Faulker's fictional city---Jefferson Mississippi in the fictional county of yoknapatawpha. It is the first short story published in an national magazine which centers on a female image and tells us the story that Miss Emily, who was born in an aristocratic family was bloomed and faded with her love. With strict tutor , Emily fell in love with Barron,a Yankee young man who came to town to do temporary work of overseeing the project. Rakish, impetuous and shallow as he were, he could not promise Emily a stable marriage life. When Emily went into a pharmacy to buy arsenic, residents in the town speculate that she was going to suicide, later Barron was missing and no one ever saw him again. After the death of Emily's father who was arbitrary and high-handed , she began to live in seclusion with the door closed tightly.Neighbors gradually smelled a heavy stench increasingly coming out of her house ,yet no one dared to disturb her, they had to secretly scatter lime near the door and window so as to cover that unbearable smell. After Miss Emily died and got buried, people finally accessed to that gloomy deep curtilage, and they found Barron's rotten corpse lying on bed in a locked room, besides which laying another pillow, indicating a sign of having been slept by someone with a few long hair on the pillow - Emily's white hair.

3.Causes of Emily's tragic life from feminism perspective

3.1 The inequality of women's social statue in the male-dominated society

A male-dominated society means that father is the head of the family and men have authority over women and children or that family, community, and society base on this system. It can also be called patriarchy.

3.1.1 Oppression under puritanism

viii 1

"Traditional culture and puritanism are important parts in southern American culture, whose core content are patriarchy, female doctrine and racism."(Liu zhuo,Peng changliu,2004:3) It is a deep-rooted ideology that dominates and determines the relationships and codes of conduct in the South, it also rules the subordinate relationships and status between men and women under certain social environment."Traditional patriarchal slave society gives birth to the "Southern Lady" culture, which emphasize that women are the accessories of men and oppose women's participation in social activities but only in families . "A growing girl can be called a beauty when she has been shaped into an image which is designed by the South . " (godwin ,1943) Clitton generalizes the characters of the southern lady ,who adhere to the established code of conduct as a symbol of virtue for they are rewarded with their devotion, motherhood, fertility, and pure (McMillen G S,2002,191) A real "southern lady" is described as a pure virgin. The importance of women's chastity and innocence is far more than their lives. "Let us toast to these lovely women living in the south who are as pure and innocent as clear water , as frosty and cold as translucent ice cube. We swear to shed blood for their purity and chastity." .Southern female are said to possess such fine traits "piety, purity and submissiveness" ( McMillen G S,2002,194 )among which piety provide guarantee for keeping a woman in her proper place, namely, her home, serving as a core of a woman’s virtue and the source of her strength.while submissiveness is perhaps the most feminine virtue that is expected from women. Hence, when a southern woman is born, she has lost the right to grow up independently and freely and have to be a woman following men's desire. Their growing up is in fact a process of personality oppression and personality strengthening as Southern lady. "Female is a dependency without willingness and decision-making by oneself." Under the shackles of puritanism, the southern women have to follow four virtues: to be faithful, obedient, housekeeping, and perfect ,and they have to suppress their own nature and comply with the duty they are supposed to have as a Southern lady ,which is the most fundamental social reason for the tragedy of love .

3.1.2 Patriarchal control from parents

ix 1

Patriarchy is an important part of traditional culture ,under the oppression of such system women form themselves basically according to men's requirements and aesthetic appreciation. Father is thought of as a ruler and a powerful decision-maker. As a firm defender of the feudal traditional culture, Emily's father, Mr Greercon oppressed Emily ,causing a factor for Emily's distorted personality and tragic fate. When he was still alive ,he confined Emily in the cabin and get accompanied all the time, let her living in a solitary life to comfort his own loneliness,he even restraint Emily to get married and shooed away all her pursurers with a horsewhip, which represents abosolute power. He didn't let her live in an independent life nor did he let her has her own true love. His outrageous selfish soured on his whip . "I felt sorry for Emily's tragedy, which is partly because she is the family's only child ."From the novel, we can also feel the word "father" like a stealth and huge net, trapping Emily mercilessly in the dilapidated house that represented the falling down of southern aristocratic power.Emily ,who had lost freedom cannot escape no matter how she struggled. The power of the word "father" is obvious to see through the whole content. The second chapter of the fiction described a picture :" We had long thought of them as a tableau, Miss Emily a slender figure in white in the background, her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground, his back to her and clutching a horsewhip, the two of them framed by the back-flung front door. "(Faulkner,1931:50 )As you can see, father seemed to expel those undesirable people who wanted to get close to her daughter by holding a whip with strict social class concept, Although he paranoidly thought that everyone in the town don't deserve her daughter ,a noble southern descent , while he himself never positively communicate with her daughter to have a understanding of his daughter's real inner thoughts and willingness. And the bossy behavior undoubtly partitioned the way for Emily to contact with the outside world.Father's tyranny and stubborn cruelly deprived of a young woman's love for life"Father had always been pillar dominating Emily's real life and spiritual world. When his father was alive, Emily was in the midst of a flower age.As she was young ,she didn't realize that the killing of her freedom and thought by her father was actually her blasting fuse of her tragic fate." lifelong trapping in that broken house

x 1

representing the previous authority and dignity faded away Miss Emily's heart yearning for a romantic life

3.1.3 Unequal concept of love between men and women

Emily only had one love in her life, that is with Homer barron, however, the love ends in tragedy. After the death of her father,Emily knew Homer barron ,She was sick for a long time. When we saw her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows--sort of tragic and serene. (Faulkner,1931,14 ) she cut her hair short, make it look like a girl, means that she was going to start a new life, longing for a better future. but "sort of tragic and serene" seems to imply that her efforts are doomed to in vain and her tragic fate is irreversible. When her father was alive, Emily suppressed her longing for love. She didn't have a chance to open her heart and have a contact with young manuntil until her father died.So when she met Homer barron, she fell in love with him with desperate obsession. Her love is warm and persistent but encountered reproach by the people living in the town." They thought that the Grier's family would never really have a crush on a Yankee ,a man getting a daily wages ." but Emily did not take it in mind,"Presently we began to see him and Miss Emily on Sunday afternoons driving in the yellow-wheeled buggy and the matched team of bays from the livery stable. "( Faulkner,1931,18 ) In reality, there exists distinctive difference between male and female. In a male-dominated systematic society, Women regard love as the life of all while men care more about about social status and fame, wanting to break out from the bondage of love and keeping self -independence.Emily devoted all her love for Homer, thinking that he is also deeply in love and will grow old together with her, but Homer's love is fleeting, in order to maintain the integrity and trying to break the will of a woman. Emily wholeheartedly love with Homer barron, hoping to get married with him, She "ordered a man's toilet set in silver, with the letters H. B. on each piece. Two days later she had bought a complete outfit of men's clothing, including a nightshirt."( Faulkner,1931,15 ) so" we " "thought " that they were married." But Homer barron was "not a man wanting to get married",He would leave the town after the project finished,he was unwilling to

xi 1

give up his life. Under such contradiction Emily can't find a solution for though she turned all her passion into love, she did not get well rewarded, hence, sticking into deep sadness and choosing an extreme way to "keep" Homer barron staying with her . She poisoned Homer with arsenic , then hid his body in a room upstairs "decorated like a bridal chamber" and slept with his corpse for decades to memorize the only love in her life.

3.1.4Misunderstanding from town residents

Emily finally inherited this building as her parent wished , and also inherited the identity of the declining aristocracy, yet whether Emily who was fragile can take on this role of his father's traditional embodiment and symbol of obligation ? Despite of a rapid development with society itself but people's ideology in the small town was still stagnant and ignorant. After her father's death, the ignorance was gradually converted into gossip and picky of Emily. This kind of comment and picky developed with different levels. Firstly, for town residents, the death of his father was actually the collapse of Greer's family when they could talk about Emily . Residents finally saw the boundaries between the nobility and civilians disappear, Emily became single and alone, most residents felt a little happy for they could express compassion for Emily. From this interpretation, we could understand why women were willing to visit her house on the second day after her father's death, expressing mourning and willingness to support her. Although it was a custom,it contained more joy and happiness of gloating .Around the matter of buring her father, Emily was almost defeated by the town residents that she has been ill for a long period, when they smelt a foul odor, they did not care about her directly but secretly splash lime inside the house. Second and the most important, residents living in the town began to pay close attention to and talk about Emily's marriage. Maybe Emily now made it clear that she needed a normal life. Now that she was not a noble, she would have right to have his own happiness, so when you see her again, her hair had been cut short, though it looked somewhat pathetic and sorrowful seeming like a girl. It was at this time that yankees Homer barron walks into her life, who is a typical northerner in terms of appearance , he is

xii 1

tall and has dark skin seeming very strong and husky. He has been to many places and know a lot of people and things, also, he is very talkative and willing to share what he has seen and heard with others. He is informal and not care of various rules and regulations. The most important is that he represents the advanced civilization of the north and seems to be born at getting along with others.Although the town does not welcome them, scolded by groups of children behind , after a couple of days he know the whole town people. No matter when and where, as long as there is laughter, Homer barron must be in the crowd. Perhaps it is this charm that attracted the Emily. After a while, Every Sunday afternoon, we could see he and Miss Emily drive a carriage traveling together. Residents in the town seem to feel sorry for Emily's past ,controlled by his father, and even feel somewhat happy for her staying with Homer. However, the talk again begin to spread, this time women is hostile picky instead of mere gloating which seems more like to revenge against the privilege the Greer family born to have.aristocracy is no more a status symbol but instead a symbol for town residents to accused Emily. Even these women following Baptist force the priest to visit her, forbidding her contact with the northerner, such cruel words do not stop Emily to find happiness belonging to her own , they are still walking on the street: Miss Emily with her head high and Homer Barron with his hat cocked and a cigar in his teeth, reins and whip in a yellow glove. However, residents don't want to see this, seeming that Emily will become a noble again . Tragedy happens somehow , Homer barron's flaws finally make fragile Emily insulaten with the whole world and becomes a demon .

3.2 Limitations of Emily's identity and character

3.2.1 Class pressure

Feminism aims at eliminate gender discrimination, and end the oppression of women for political objectives.Through gender identity research to probe into the causes of the oppressed women.Willam Faulker designs the fate of Emily into an end of "sunset", namely the tragic fate of negative old aristocracy. America experiences great changes after the civil war: feudal forces gradually decline, capitalism xiii 1

emergences and the southern plantation economy inevitably affected by industrialization. Southern nobles make a stubborn resistance after losing wealth and status, they miss the past glory days, trying to stop the social progressive pace . As a scion of aristocracy ,Emily naturally becomes a traditional embodiment ,a part of the glorious past. "Alive,Miss Emily had been a tradition, a duty, and a care; a sort of hereditary obligation upon the town. The reason why Emily gets respect and admiration from people is that"she took a grand mission, exercise a kind of symbol function of the system and culture. Her presence meets the need of endangered order that in an era of dramatic change she serves as a spiritual foundation supporting the fracturing of the old south" .A word she says ,a deed she does will get reviewed according to southern aristocratic standard. It is also because of getting too much responsibility and obligation that makes Emily lost autonomy right. When she was seeking after her love, people in the town began to whisper and get panic, people said she was a"fallen woman", "a shame in the whole town and a bad example for the youth, older people said that she forgot about the right behaviour of people. They want to prevent Emily and Homer barron by sending a Baptist minister to visit her and even brought in Emily's two cousins to interfere. Emerging labor class represents a kind of positive and advanced force, while declining southern aristocratic forces symbolizes decadent, backward and poor. There are irreconcilable contradictions in the cultures of the two classes. The love between the two people from two different backgrounds is unacceptable for the people in the town. Finally their love ended. When people see Emily buying arsenic from pharmacy, they thought that she want to commit suicide and this was beeter choice for her. From this piont we can see that in order to maintain the south's traditional status, the people regarless of Emily's life. Emily is an the embodiment of tradition in the mind of the people in the town. People admire her, afraid of her, even though their admiration makes Emily gradually moved away from the crowd. She had been isolated. After Homer barron left her, Emily lived a solitary life. " After Emily’s lover gone, people can't see her anymore and her front door has been closed. Social groups not only lack understanding of her but also be too demanding for her which eventually makes Emily has no contact with society and xiv 1

completely retreat to a dark enclosed space. She eventually become inaccessible, irrational and singular and inevitably became the scapegoat of the southern tradition. Emily changed from a fine figure of a southern belle up to whom looked like a corpse in water for a long time, swelling and white, an arrogance of lonely spinster. (li Yang, 2004:33-37). But the fate of Emily is notjust as that. Moreover, she killed her lover by her own hand and put herself completely into a kind of isolated position of spirit and body – companied with Homer body until die.

3.2.2 Dual character---distorted combination of conservative thought and rebellious spirit

Most of the plots in "A rose for Emily" took place in the United States after the Civil War, but Miss Emily was obviously living in the past, for her mentality was nostalgic, belonging to the past. The critic,Frederico Salas Derek Sam also mentioned "Many people are able to survive in the present, but they simply do not consider the future, and these people usually live in the past,so is Miss Emily".After the death of her father, she should had got the freedom from the shackles that limited her freedom of action, however, the spirit of shackles would not be able to unload as easy as possible. On one hand, racism, aristocratic superiority, the old traditons of the South and the old culture had been long infiltrated her bone marrow, deprived of her ability to accept new things.

Emily cherished her own nobility. When going to the pharmacy to buy poison, she showed no reaction to the shopkeepers' inquiry, arrogantly displaying her own dignity and privileges above the law.The way Emily dealt with her father after his death also reflected the importance of their own social status."She greeted them at the door, with costumes as usual, no trace of grief on her face. She told them that her father didn't die".She was reluctant to admit that her father was dead, nor was she willing to give up to give up the dead body of her father, which suggested that her father's past glory had great impact on her, which she valued very much . With days going on and things having changed, when the town commissioners came to ask for tax, she also kept the family pride, never forgot to carry the symbol which shows her family authority, "a gold-plated ebony cane" to see them. She brusquely refused to pay taxes, shrugged off

xv 1

free postal service. On another hand, She completely separated herself from the world and lived a secluded life, painful maintained their most basic dignity. She couldn't adapt to a society which should go through the changes or being undergoing the changes. These formed her traditional character, which largely caused her tragic fate,In addition to the conservative character, she also wanted to make a change. The conservative character with the distorted development of the society more intensified her tragic fate. As the representative of the southern aristocratic, Miss Emily kept the south aristocracy peculiar to lofty and aloof in her bone. After her father's death, Emily knew she had to face the reality of the outside world by herself.. But increasing contact with the outside world had prompted the contradiction between Emily and the town residents. Underneath the superiority and high sense of aristocratic let her regard the pity and sorry of the town residents as shameful things. Therefore, after she got rid of her father's imperious control, she refused to pay taxes and ignored tax official letter. She even beat the delegation sent by the government and won a complete "victory" all by herself. In the summer after her father died, when people saw her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows--sort of tragic and serene, and dark brown glass angel "church", "sort of pathetique and solemn and respectful.Hair cut short seems to imply that Miss Emily had decided to break away from the previous life and to bravely pursue her own happiness ,so she desperatly put aside the shackles of the old tradition, and abandon the gossip around her, sticking into an fanatical obsession with a Yankee who got daily wages .However, after knowing Homer barron like men, she poisoned him and made a long-term coexistence with his body, attempting to use this extreme way to keep her lover forever. She closed herself and guarded the eternal imaginary kingdom .After the death of Homer barron, she only lived in her own world, treating others with the way in her own world. She lived in the remote past, when living with the body together ,she not only had a real stay with the god of death, but also pushed herself into the abyss, making herself dying as well.

xvi 1

Conclusion Emily's life is tragic and pathetic, she had suffered oppression from his father's patriarchal control ,treated inequality with the unequal concept of love between men and women, misunderstood by the residents and dominated by the social world ,also, she had weak and limited character including class pressure and dual personality, which in a sense ,contribute to her misfortunes.knowing the causes of Emily’s tragic life will enable us to have a better understanding of feminism. To get rid of the same tragedy fate as Emilyas a modern woman ,we need the efforts with our country and ourselves. On the one hand, It needs the social guidance to realize the equality of women .Our society should advocate the idea of equality between men and women and encourage people to lay emphasis on women's equal status in real sense. Although China has gradually eliminated discrimination against women, yet patriarchal thought entrenched in many areas , especially in the remote areas. In this sense, the role a society plays is extremely important ; On the other hand, as a modern woman, we should build up a sense of independent consciousness and emancipate from ideological, spiritual, and behavioral aspects thus to become our own rulers.
