Published or Perish?

Recently, many universities require each graduate student to have at least one paper published before getting the master's degree, which is considered as a good way to evaluate their students. To my opinion, I strongly support this way of evaluating and hope it could be more acceptable.

For one thing, paper publishing is a reflection and also a standard of students' academic performance and social capabilities. The school can weight how excellent students' academic abilities are and how is the performance of execution and communication kept by the students by using this way. It can be a typical new and effective way for school to select talented person besides the traditional way.

For another, it also benefit students. They can get an additional way to prove their abilities by paper publishing, it is good for those students who are not good at examinations but research and execution. What's more, by this requirement, undergraduate students can have an opportunity to be prepared for the learning process and pattern of graduate school.

From the foregoing, we can easily draw a conclusion that it is beneficial for universities to require their students to have at least one paper published before getting the master's degree. Universities can have a wider and more comprehensive way to evaluate their students. Therefore, the undergraduate students who want higher education should practice and be prepared for their

future.

Publish or Perish

It is well-known that Chinese have made great progress in science since the founding of new China, and it is no exaggeration to say that we are leaders in some realm. Of course, it is the achievement of thousands of hard-working scientists. However, I do not agree with the value system ‘Publish or Perish’. To begin with, there are some competitions in science, especially in some research hot-spots, such as the biotechnology. Sometimes, we may find some papers are identical with our researches in hand. Actually, we find the same results just several days later. Unfortunately, we could not publish it again and we have wasted all the time, energy and money. In order to publish a certain number of papers every year, scientists must work hard day and night, therefore, they have no time to do physical exercises. It has been proved that scientists are usually not in good physical conditions. Recently, to survive, some scientists have to plagiarize other's ideas or fabricate test data. Plagiarism is not only harmful to our academia but also detrimental to our society.

Graduate student,primarily interested in academic and science, are expected to have at least one paper published than those who graduated ten

years ago, and far more concerned with the problems of research.

Firstly, publication is one of the few methods at a students' disposal to demonstrate their academic capabilities, and the attention that publications bring to scholars and their sponsoring institutions can facilitate progress through the field and continued funding. Students who never published or who focus on activities which do not result in publications such as undergraduates, may find themselves out of contention for available tenure-track positions. Secondly, Research-oriented universities may attempt to manage the unhealthy aspects of the publish-or-perish practices, but their administrators often argue that some pressure to produce cutting-edge research is necessary to motivate students early in their careers to focus on research advancement, and learn to balance its achievement with the other responsibilities of the professorial role. Finally, in order to publish, graduate students will read more and more academic literature and acquire of the experience of publishing. Thus, I believe that it can make great contribution to us and improve scientific research ability.

In a word, ‘Publish or Perish’ is not suitable for scientists.

But in China, getting the master's degree depends largely on one thing: The number of research papers he or she manages to publish. Theoretically, if more papers are published, the chance that these papers are cited by others, will be greater. The only reason to explain what’s happening in China now is that the quality of those papers are extremely low. And the pressure to publish-or-perish also detracts from the time and effort graduate student can devote to their research.

I personally hold the point of view that the pressure to publish has been cited as a cause of poor work being submitted to academic journals. In fact, failure to publish research results is by far the most common and worrying form of scientific and ethical misconduct in research.

The only reason to explain what's happening in China now is that the quality of those papers is extremely low. And the pressure to publish-or-perish also detracts from the time and effort graduate student can devote to their research.

Read or do

While it's quite obvious that there are good many advantages brought by doing, virtually, thoughts of people with not much reading can't be elevated by doing in some way.

People taking actions to alter for the better surround us all the time. Significant passion in running small business, such as selling packed meal and directly delivering fresh fruits to the dormitory, is evident. And many colleges seriously love to be a part of the association activities, even have no idea of what's going on in the activity. Whereas many of them who act instead of reading more make little advancement both in their mind or knowledge, for almost everyone give their concentration on their external activities, ignoring the insight of their hearts. Nevertheless, it is of more importance to reach the mind's pinnacle, and only by this way, difficult matters in the frustrating life become nothing.

In the contrast, lots of benefits, which not only direct our lives, but also do a favour at the time confronting emotion, gradually touch us. Poems that are fantastic as "let life be beautiful as summer flowers and death as autumn leaves" leave it's fragrance and radiance on us, then, the complaint of the boredom disappear. Novels introduce us a world full of colours and emotions, no matter happy or sad, and reading autobiography let us draw on the wisdom of the genius person whose dream was smoothly obtained. Owing to reading, our life comes to a style that is of a variety of colours and sense and more better than the style we try to promote by doing, which wastes our time and energy.

Though, both ways in which we are hoping to have the understanding, the ability and the life sense show it's strengths, I am greatly liable to read books, for only through this way it's much easier to rich my spiritual and physical life.
