Biology Personal Statement

Being born in the shadow of Sellafield, and growing up near the home of Unilever Research & Development, my interest in Science was, in my eyes, inevitable. My fascination with Biology began to develop at a young age. Having a large number of family members in the field meant I was constantly surrounded and inspired by cutting edge research and equipment, and I would often be found in my garden gazing with awe at the diversity of life, or in my bedroom studying everything from leaves to dust mites with my light microscope

As my academic studies progressed, Biology started to become my passion. I began to excel at primary school level, frequently receiving top marks in science exams and being asked to speak about the subject at various

assemblies. This ability carried through to secondary school, where I would pick up numerous awards for both effort and attainment within the subject. I represented my school’s science department at numerous events at

universities, including the prestigious “Salters Festival” at Liverpool University. Biology at A-Level has given me the opportunity to further extend my studies, allowing me to carry out private and independent work, something I find immensely interesting. I took this opportunity further study microbiology and the use of electron microscopes within industry. Through this, I was granted a placement as a voluntary Lab Assistant at Unilever R&D

During my time at Unilever I was able to put my A Level Biology and Chemistry theory into action. The staff were immensely impressed with my knowledge of Transmission and Scanning Electron Microscopes, and allowed me to carry out basic functions required for the use of each, including the preparation of slides for study and resolution control. My Physical Chemistry skills were required whilst carrying out titrations, and knowledge of Organic Chemistry was vital in the use of surfactants. It was biology, however, that played the largest part in my time. I was required to prove important data for a study upon the effects of certain chemicals on human hair, which will later be used in a genuine study

Whilst my time at Unilever was primarily based upon Biology and Chemistry, I was occasionally given the chance to develop my communication skills, a skill I have also received from ethical debates within Theology. I was asked to present new ideas for Unilever’s “Go Green” initiative, for which I was

commended for my confidence and ability to work under pressure. This led to a number of individuals stating they would be very interested in seeing me

coming back to Unilever for a future post-graduate course, most of whom I am still in contact with

These communication skills are also evident in my out of college hobbies, where I am a published music journalist and acclaimed blogger. My work has been used in both nationwide and local publications, and on a number of successful music websites as well as being quoted as official reviews by a number of bands. Through this, I was asked to take up a role at Q Radio, the radio counterpart to the UK’s highest selling monthly music magazine. As part of this job I am required to work alongside other journalists, local bands and prominent event’s organizers within Merseyside in finding the most exciting underground music and bringing it to the public’s attention. My blog, on the other hand, sees me acting as a team leader, setting out tasks for my writers and providing advice and support to ensure their work is always up to the

desired standard. I find my journalistic work ideal as allows me to continuously enhance my English skills, whilst remaining totally flexible around any

academic studies. Living in a city will allow me to continue this work throughout university

The idea of being surrounded by likeminded people within a university setting is something that excites me, and the thought of using my passion to improve the life of others in a research environment is what motivates me to continue within this field

Personal Statement

In 1998, when I was 15 years old, I was selected the new editor-in-chief of my high school magazine. Strictly speaking, it was merely a booklet, made up of a few articles composed by the students originally and a little na?ve report about the big events in the school. However, that booklet changed my life. The hope and desire to become a real media practitioner began to grow inside my heart from then on.

In 2001, I entered Sun Yat-sen University, one of the top 10 universities in China, and I was recruited by a magazine call Ling Nan Ren (which means people from Ling Nan, the south point of China). I was asked in the interview: “what kind of character, do you think, is essential to make us different from all other student magazines?” My answer was that,“ the name of the magazine indicates a geographic concept. When all other magazines try to be the mouthpiece of university students, we should focus more on the region and the students in it, its own cultural style and the local creation…” Though puerile, it was the first time I stated my concept for a whole magazine out. In 2003, I became the editor-in-chief of Pilgrimage Magazine, which consists of articles in five different languages. It required me to think more globally, as well as maintain the local and original creation. Then I found my interest of study: media and globalization, and the relationship between the global and the local.

I’m also a reporter and editor of the Television Center, Sun Yat-sen University. Last Feb, I went to a Hansen’s disease Village together with Japanese Volunteers, to build a new toilet for the HD sufferers. I recorded down all things happened there with my DV camera and made my first documentary. TV production has taught me about how to cater to the needs and wants of a more extensive audience, and encouraged me to pay attention to more aspects of the world.

I’m currently majoring in English Language and Literature. Such background will benefit me a lot in my future study and research. Language is not only a language; it’s also a carrier of culture and thoughts. In order to master the language well, I have to understand the culture and history of the western world and pay a lot of attention to cross-culture communications. Though I haven’t an academic background in Media Studies or Journalism, My undergraduate programme can provide me with a special perspective and analytic skills to solve the problems in my future study. Language learning also focused a lot on basic skills training, such as writing, intensive reading, literature translation and discourse analysis, which have equipped me for more in-depth studies.

In my undergraduate study, I achieved an average score of 86.6% and was awarded the academic excellence scholarship for 3 consecutive years. Apart from the core courses, I’m also interested in History and Gender Studies. The courses I’ve taken and audited, varied from Chinese ancient poetry, contemporary European civilization to Gender Representation, have helped me to mold a more solid method of observation. I’m confident that my impressive academic background,

English proficiency and practical intern experiences will all strengthen my potential for further study.

Months ago, I was extremely honored to have a meeting with the British Ambassador in China, Sir Christopher Hum, at my university. Sir Hum asked the students at the meeting about our image of UK. I told him that UK is a most creative country in my opinion. The dynamic creative industry in this country really attracts me a lot. I sincerely hope that my ideas and interest, which germinated from my Chinese background, can be nourished in the soil of creativity, seriousness and enthusiasm. The marrow of culture and knowledge in both countries, China and UK, will definitely have a GREat impact on me. After I finish my study, I will probably come back to China and work in its booming media industry. At the same time, I’ll try to carry on my study to a higher level. I want to bring the advanced concept I’ve learned back to China and to be involved in the media education after I’m qualified enough.

The department of Media and Communications at LSE has admirable faculties and its research thematic areas are exactly what I’m interested in. I hope that LSE can open up a new and splendid academic future for me, and I will be fortunate enough to contribute to the future of LSE.

Program: MSc in Scientific, Technical and Medical Translation with Translation Technology by DIANA

English has never been of absence from my life. 16 years ago, it was the first pronunciation of “apple” which took almost an afternoon to make that knocked out the door to this beautiful

language. Brought up by an English teacher mother, I always feel close to this language and have a deep recognition of its increasingly important role in the society. Four years’ undergraduate study of electronics helps me to realize its significance from a more practical academic aspect. Communication is the main role in nowadays society. To promote the interaction between China and the world, translation science could have a vital role. Against such backdrop, I have decided to take translation as my future career in favor of renowned Master programmer in this field at XXX. Through this program, I wish to develop myself into a well-trained and skilled specialist. The undergraduate study of microelectronics is a challenging and useful try-out for me. Within this time, I found myself GREat necessity and suitability to study further in translation field.

During the study of specialized electronic related courses, I found, like many other science courses, it is a new stream of subject originated from western world. From the fundamental course like basic circuit to integrated circuit design, there are many courses that are written and taught in

English. Moreover, there are many experiments and equipment that are carried out and operated in the English operating environment, such as CAD, MATLAB. Although we have Professional

English for electronics, many students still experienced hard times when reading the English

books and materials. Involved with many specialized phrases, the English books are so difficult to understand that lots new information is hard to appreciate. Even many of our teachers complain about the foreign language materials. All these are speaking of one fact, in present China, comparing with the fast increasing import specialized knowledge and technology, the

corresponding technicians and scientists lack of necessary knowledge to understand it therefore leads to a delay in the transfer of information.

Moreover, several experience has deepened my recognition about the demands in the science translation field. Last winter holiday, I had an opportunity to work in a translation company as an intern. Much business received there are about technique immigrates or manufactures or

companies who introduced foreign techniques whose instructions are needed to be translated into English. For those big firms, proper translation is crucial or else it may result in GREat lose in economy. Meanwhile, as one who always use computer and software, I feel clearly by myself that translation is no longer a kind of work that done only by hand or by person, more and more translation work is finished by computer programs. So there is an increasingly demand for the reliability of mechanized operated translation technology.

With all these opportunities, my advantage lies in my long-term well-trained English capacity. Ever since primary school, I have kept studying English for more than a decade. After entering university, I even fastened my pace in English study. In my mind, I always have a clear goal of how well I should master this language and in what possible ways my future career may link with it. Besides major, English has almost shared rest of my study time. All my endeavor rewarded me GREatly. In continuing 2 years’ participation in National College Contest, I won the 3rd and 1st prize respectively. I have passed BEC vantage in the interest of business English. Another

competitive strength of mine is my scientific background. Being a science student, I know what the most demanding problems are and have the important knowledge of related science subjects. On the other hand, my character and personal interests leads me to the direction of translation. I am a person who is very fond of culture and communication. The translation course provides me a GREat chance to learn more about characters of English countries and improve my

communication skills and comprehension ability. Although my major is science based, I always have chances to develop my writing and reading ability. I once worked in XX News Agency as an intern for a summer, mainly writing reports in both Chinese and English. I also once helped translating booklists in a publishing house. With a scientific background and specialized knowledge I believe I would be more competitive than others.

On the living aspects, I am one always full of passions, who is willing to make friends with people, having vast interests in multi-field. I read extensively, absorbing knowledge in different fields. I am one who can make quick adaptation to the environment. To live a happy life when far away from home, one very factor is to find a standpoint in the new environment. I love traveling, during college time, I visited many cities in north east of China. No matter traveling with friends or making the journey by myself, I can always get pleasure. I enjoy the experience of travel, I never felt nerve or strange in a new place. On the contrary, my passion and curiosity can be inspired by

the fresh things. Entering into a new field, I do not want to definite myself as a newcomer therefore to keep a distance. I prefer to take a close view into the objectives.

With the technology booming and globalization, China will have more opportunities to exchange ideas with the world. Therefore there will be need for more and more well-trained translators. I am ready and anxious to entering this field by studying the program in your school. My belief is that through studying English in the very country of its origination I may further deepen my

understanding of English. By that is closely connected with communications at linguistic and back to choice or work in government associations where to put what I’ve learned into use.

Personal Statement

Being brought up in Beijing in an educated family, I was fortunately given the best education in China. In my childhood I preferred reading books to satisfy my curiosity. I never ceased to contemplate over the questions I encountered. Such objects as history and psychology had a special fascination to me and my knowledge of social science as well as interest in this field was increasing rapidly. Gradually, my interest and curiosity becomes commitment toward business studies.

As a high school student in China, I had to concentrate on the College Entrance Examination (CEE), even so, books not related to the exams were never excluded from my life. Unfortunately when I was admitted to Peking University with an outstanding CEE result in the millennium year, a frustrating period began. I enrolled in the department of electronic and information technology. Although I am interested in, I was not allowed to study social science because of the pressure from the social atmosphere years ago. Any attempt to persuade myself to focus on my major was failed at the beginning of my college life. After several terms, I realized that I would never be interested in being a scientist or an engineer. At that moment, I lost my direction and objectives.

My persistence in reading saved me from the dark situation. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed reading the books included Encyclopedia Americana, “History Study” by Toynbee, and some magazines of marketing and advertisement. I began to notice something interesting: Why do we prefer this product to another? Why some company could sell more than others do? Why companies spent so much money on advertisement?

With the questions in my mind, I started to read many relevant books. I was lucky to read “The End of Advertisement As We Know It” by Sergio?Zyman, who disillusioned those addicted in the myth of advertisement and pointed out sharply that advertising is not an art but a part of marketing, the final goal of which is merely earning money. I even sat before a television just to analyze advertisements. Studying by myself for more than 1 year, I answered some of my questions

when more questions were found. Moreover, I began to design advertisements myself for some products as if I had been a manager; definitely I was increasingly interested in what I was doing. By December, 2002, I have finally determined to take marketing as my career instead of IT. To answer the unsolved questions and accumulate more relevant knowledge, I decided to find some part-time job and read more books after my graduation.

At that time, The president of Advertising Association of PKU offered me an opportunity to participate in an training held by a famous Japanese company ,DENTSU,in Renmin University of China in Nov ,2003. During in-depth discussions with some b-school students of the project, they all encouraged me to pursue my future career in business field because of my intellectual ability and the brand new ideas I mentioned. Also I have learned the strong character from the employees. I appreciate this experience and now I have assumed the duty as one of the leaders of Advertising Association of PKU.

Practical experience related with business is not the only thing I am interested in, providing contribution to the society is equally important from my part.In Oct, 2003 I joined PKU Loveheart Society. In the association I participated in two activities: The main role for me in the association is teaching in certain primary schools founded by individuals that offer educational opportunities to pupils whose family could hardly provide any basic financial support for their education. At the same time, we visit advanced people in a nursing home every weekend to accompany them. Nothing could stop me continuing those meaningful actions until now because my whole life is being enriched, thus I am endowed with many truehearted friends who are sharing the same ideal with me: to be a successful person in order to help those who need help.

In addition, Kungfu and computer(3D MAX) are important elements in my life as well.

Market in China is vast and growing rapidly but not mature,so it calls for more professionals with not only proper knowledge but also business ethics. I have got enthusiasm about marketing and boast creativity as well as diligence, but pursuing a higher degree is a wise choice. City University was recommended by my friends. I am firmly convinced that your admission will be my first step of success. I look forward to studying there because it will make my dream come ture, being a successful businessman to help the poor.

推荐信1,外教

I wholeheartedly recommend to be admitted to your university. He is a very determined student who has excellent inter-personal skills and is a credit to Beijing University. I have got to know him one year before through his involvement with the university’s Love Heart Association. Every week he teaches with me at a school for the children of migrant workers on the outskirts of Beijing. He is clearly loved by the students there and he also has the respect of his fellow students at Beijing University.

A very independent thinker, he enjoys reading widely and will have no problems keeping up with the demands of a postgraduate course. He is under no illusions about how hard he will have to work and plans to use the next six months to undertake preliminary course reading as well as improve his English. He is clearly committed to helping people less fortunate than himself and wants to contribute to Chinese society as much as possible in the future. I wish him all the very best for the future and am sure that he will be a great asset to your university.

推荐信2,我老师签字的

has successfully graduated from Peking University in June, 2004. I have known him for more than one year and I was his teacher who instructed him to finish his dissertation. His diligence and creativity impressed me, and he is always ready to give out new ideas. His dissertation, for instance, showed this attribute. Although he was not a preeminent student in our department, I am certain that he is promising.

He shows his intense desire to take marketing instead of IT as his career, when chatting with me, he often mention his opinions in the field. In deed, he has been reading relevant books and proved his ability to study all by himself. Although sometimes he is puzzled by frustrations and too cautious, I am firmly convinced that he will do his utmost, and, he will be surely suitable for further study. So I strongly recommend him to you.

嗯,所以,如果你平均分75以上……

你就想想我就成了……

总之要把最好的写出来……
