Thursday March 1, 2013 Fine

This afternoon an American high school delegation, consisting of 10 students and 5 teachers came to visit our school. Our headmaster showed them around some parts of the school, such as the library, the lab and the gym.

Fortunately, our class was chosen to have an informal discussion with the visitors, which was a good opportunity for us to practice our English. Everyone at present was active to introduce themselves one by one. Our monitor, Zhanghua, introduced the Chinese traditional festivals, especially the Chinese Spring Festival.Soon after that Tom, an American student, who was a great fan of YaoMing and Jeremy Shuhow Lin, said something about NBA and some other hobbies. Then we talked about some other topics that we were interested in.Almost an hour had passed before we realized it. It's really amazing to talk with the American teachers and students in English, which helps us a lot with our English.

An Unforgettable Day

Late one afternoon, I was on my way home from school. I walked slowly along the street with my head dropped. The scenes on both sides of the street were beautiful, but I had no interest in them at all. I walked and walked, thinking of what had happened that day. Just a few minutes before the second class began that afternoon, I was asked to go to the teacher’s office. I heard my teacher talking to my mother with anger. “How could you dare to go to see a film this morning without permission?” Mother said at the top of her voice, slapping me in the face heavily. I looked at mother, dumb founded...

I walked more slowly, for I had seen my house ahead, where mother was always standing at the door, smiling at me, at this time every day. But now, she wasn’t there. My heart was beating faster. I even didn’t dare to open the door for fear that mother should beat again. Not knowing what to do, I sat on the ground near the door, blaming myself for what I had done. Suddenly a soft hand patted me on the head. I looked up, seeing mother standing beside me. I couldn’t help crying, “Mum!” tears rolling down my cheeks.

I went to the Summer Palace yesterday morning. After entering the main gate, I happened to meet some American visitors. I greeted them and we began talking. I got to know that they were college students travelling in China. I showed them to the Long Corridor, the Stone Ship, up to the Longevity Hill and some other places. After that we went boating on Kunming Lake. We all had a wonderful time in the Summer Palace. When we came out of the gate, I helped them do some shopping. Then they thanked me and left.

I felt very happy and proud that I could be of some help to foreign friends by using my English and got a good chance to practise my spoken English.

1. Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped

over the past 10 years. __ 71 Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.

A. Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.

B. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.

C. “One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says.

D. Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.

E. Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.

F. Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that will help you succeed in many areas of life.

G. Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.

2.?4.Let it grow.

It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend. 74 . The best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.

A. Be cheerful.

B. Do things together.

C. Do not wait to be spoken to.

D. Try not to find fault with your friends.

E. Making new friends comes easy for some people.

F. For a friendship to develop you need to stay in touch.

G. So you will need to give your friend time to react to you.

3. Trust has been considered as the basis of any relationship, including friendship. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe. _71_ . Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us?

People can be extraordinarily jealous(猜疑的) sometimes.

You know they will never pass on a wrong suggestion.

In fact, winning trust is, by far, the most challenging aspect of relationships. Two people cannot have identical reactions to a situation and different opinions do exist.

No matter how close you are to your friends, you cannot take that comfort level for granted.

If your friends share their secrets, there’s a good possibility that they have much faith in you.

However, people who are fortunate to have been blessed with true friends are never alone in any battle.

4. Some people might argue that we should have the freedom to dress however we want regardless of what people think. They can also argue that we should not judge people based on how a person dresses. _73_ . People judge us based on how we look, and that is a fact that we should accept.

The dress should match the occasion.

It is helpful to have fashion awareness when we dress.

Therefore, the look is important for a first impression.

That is pretty ideal, but it is not practical in the real world.

It changes people’s reactions towards you in a positive way.

Therefore, it is a good idea to be aware of how we behave at home.

However, when we dress up and go out to public places, it becomes an issue.

5. Another interesting fact about those in the sandwich generation is that they may not have any siblings(兄弟姐妹), because families have gotten smaller in the last century. _75_ . As a result, the burden of taking care of elderly parents is on one child rather than among a whole passel(群) of kids, who shared the responsibility as it once was.

Some people of the sandwich generation are seniors themselves.

There are 20 million American women who like the sandwich very much.

Living to the age of 85 or older used to be rare but it is not so any more. And sometimes they can’t handle it very well but they don’t have a choice. Alternatively, they may only have one sibling but may live far from each other. That visual image should give you an idea of what the “sandwich generation’ is. However, this type of living arrangement may return because of financial pressures. 针对训练答案:1. B 2.G 3.C 4.D 5.E
