Most researchers at home and abroad have translated the poem Saying Goodbye to Cambridge again into English and they analyze it in detail from different angles. Many scholars at home try to translate it to keep its beauty of meaning.while because of the difference of culture many translators aboard try their best to keep the beauty of form.Maybe it is difficult for them to understand the real meaning of the poems.Although there are many versions of the poem,few of the researchers make comparative study of the versions.
The Application of Three Beauties ----Such as Two Chinese Versions of A Red, Red Rose discusses how translators use the three beauties theory in the process of translation to achieve their aims.
The master of Shanghai University Chen Lingyun' A Comparative Study of the Four Chinese Versions of the call of the wild analyzes the call of the wild from different angles of translation theory,she also analyzes literal translation and free translation but she has the same aim with the former one. They discuss both the forms and their content of the poem. They not only talk about the explicit in the versions but also further explore the hidden social motivations implied in the poetry translation. Their study focuses more on the application of the translation theory.
Appreciation of Saying Good-bye to Cambridge Again,unfortunately ,the writer is unknown,gives a detailed appreciation of the poem. This passage can help the readers understand the background and the deep meaning of the poem.What;s more it gives a brief introduction of the poet Xu Zhimo Which can also help the readers know more about him. However it does not give any advices to the translators in the process of translation.
Contemporary Translation Theories,written by Gentzler,Edwin, is about the translation theory which the translators uses now. In the passage, Gentzler gives detailed comparison of free translation and literal translation. In the thesis we will know about the translation style of the transistors in which one version keeps free translation style and another keep literal translation.In fact, they both have their strong points. Free translation can express the mening of the original poem well while literal translation can keep the beauty of form. So in the process of translation we should combine the two styles well.
It is possible to discuss the issue in combination with reference to other factors of poem translation. The force of an poem translation does not lie solely in its language. Sometimes interpretation of apiece of poem cannot be finished without the aid of these factors.
Definitely, there are some other relevant issues this study does not touch upon and therefore further study is awaited……
Despite the efforts made, limited by time and research competence, the thesis has some imperfections. First of all, an important limitation of this thesis is my focus that is too narrow. The selection of topic clearly leaves aside many other devices in the language of the versions, but nevertheless covers a wide array of language problems.
Secondly, the beauty of style is damaged. Apart from language, a complete poem translation should be keep the conception of the original poem as much as possible Total ignorance of the other parts of the poem translation,t is, no doubt, reproachable, if the effect of the whole translation is to be viewed.
The present author hopes that this paper will prove beneficial to those who are interest in the translation of poems.……
