Good afternoon, teachers and schoolmates. Thanks for your attending! I come from Class4, and I am Zhou Zhimei. My supervisor is Miss Li.
Today, the title of my paper is An Eco-feminist reading of Tess’ Tragedy in Tess of D’Urbervilles. Eco-feminists hope to arouse people's ecological consciousness and awareness of gender equality, establishing a tolerant society where harmony maintains between nature, women and men. Hardy thinks that historical changes in transitional society imply failure and regret. Especially for Women who are related to nature, industrial civilization and modem life separate them from nature. I use the literary theory of Eco-feminism to analyze the root of Tess’ tragedy in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of D’Urbervilles from the relationships between Tess and nature, the social economic and idea.
In the main part of my paper, I divide it to three parts. The first part is theoretical basis of eco-feminism; in this chapter feminism and eco-feminism will be presented and discussed, and important theoretical sources will be reviewed and literary terms will be defined and illustrated. The second part is introduction to the work and the hero image; this chapter is mainly about introduction to the book and the writer and analysis of characters in Tess of D’Urbervilles. The third part is exploration of the causes of Tess’ tragedy in eco-feminism; it can be divided into Tess’ tragedy and the root causes; the root causes are Tess’ ecological revolt against civilization, the social economic and the social idea.
Through the analysis of the root of Tess’ tragedy, readers can not only deeply understand the fact that civilization is built up at the cost of destruction of nature, but also realize the importance of being in harmonious relationship with nature.
