The surprising fact that I discovered during my first·year at the university was that quite a big number of·students were solely motivated by the academic degree they would obtain upon graduation.Certainly, I would not go anywhere near so far as to doubt the social and economic value that adegree would bring to students in future. However, I deem it too nar row for students tomaintain this kind of attitude towards their studies.

In my mind, university life contains many enjoyable things, such as new ideas, good books·and brilliant people. And the pursuit of new ideas, the reading of good books and the campus·friendship require a student's complete devotion but will shine in his whole life.

Probably this tendency is rooted in the vocation-oriented and the career-oriented motivation.If a student discovers his vocation, he finds a life-time pleasure in pursuing his profession. By·contrast, a career-oriented student tends to take the academic certificate as an only means topreferment.

In conclusion, the university provides students with many golden opportunities, getting adegree being one of them. The challenge of new ideas, the leisure to read and the chance to·meet people are equally important. Anyway, a broad mind adds so much to the value of adegree.

Learning English in an English-speaking country has·many advantages. It is, therefore, a good idea to learn English in Britain or America. However, I·believe it is not the only way to learn the language .

To begin with, most students in non-English-speaking countries learn English in high schools or·universities. Although their spoken English is not usually of a very high standard, their·knowledge of grammar is often quite advanced. This is certainly useful when later they come toan Englishspeaking country to perfect the language.

However, it is obviously advantageous to learn English in English-speaking countries where,everyday, students will have ample chance to practise listening and speaking. In addition ,students can experience the foreign culture, which greatly helps understand the language. This·is especially true if·they choose to live with an English or American family. Still, since are·taught by native speakers, their reading and writing skills will improve as well .

As every coin has two sides, learning English at home also proves effective. At home students·will have less stress and fewer problems in accommodation, expensive tuition and living costs.

In conclusion, it is preferable to study English in an English-speaking country, but areasonable level of English can be achieved at home, if a student is gifted and dedicated to·study.

Every time I go to the bookstore, I will buy some books like dictionaries, reference books·which are of pragmatic use and classical literary works which are to be chewed and digested.Unlike some people who buy books just for the purpose of filling their shelves and showing·others how learned they are, my purpose is simple and practical — reading. Moreover, thebooks I want to keep are usually too expensive and I can afford only a few volumes.

From libraries I borrow books that are to be swallowed, because, on the one hand, library books·are not allowed to keep a long time; and on the other hand, the library is a sea of books and I·think I have to do speed-reading, that is, to swallow as many as I can.

I also borrow books from friends, especially new arrivals. I just want to have a taste. If the·taste is good, then I will go and buy them to add to my store. If not, well, just for a taste.

In short, I don't mind where I can get books, but books are always my source of knowledge·and wisdom

A reading habit thus formed will prove valuable to you. Whenever you have spare time, you·will resort not to places of pleasure, but to the bookshelves, you will not feel lonesome whenyou are alone, because you can see all kinds of characters moving and acting on the pages,and you can hear all kinds of good counsel.
