Question:
The best way for the government to solve traffic congestion is to provide free public transportation 24 hours a day 7 days a week. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Model Answer:
“Getting somewhere” is a concept—despite its original meaning of “succeeding in something”—that plagues the general public around the world. To cope with the
traffic, governments are believed to be able to help by providing free public transport around the clock. This essay disapprove of the practicality and validity in the practice.
It is admittedly true that public transport is certainly appealing, especially when it is offered free and 24/7. With no fees incurred, most if not all commuters will favour public transport regardless of such downsides as relatively prolonged trip and less comfortable experience. Also, should passengers choose public transport, their road safety would be enhanced for the insurance attached to their fare and when they travel at an inconvenient/late hour.
However, it is impractical to implement all-day free public transport service. The first and obvious obstacle is finance. Most countries are operating public transportation system as a public service with governmental subsidy, and thus free public transport might be financially impossible. Moreover, all-day public transport is theoretically redundant and with few precedents, and the for that is little to none.
To further the argument, the measure in the topic lacks rationale. Apparently, an
population will most likely incurs more traffic, and in that sense, population control instead of free transport would be the key. More profoundly, reasons for ever-heavier traffic are urbanisation and city planning. With the influx of population, cities are forced to expand in area and accordingly traffic mounts. Also, civil planning without a vision adds to traffic problems—trips to places with congested traffic around are sometimes unavoidable.
In sum, free and all-day public transport service is not the cure to congested traffic because it not financially feasible and does not address the issues behind the problem.

1 Nowadays, we enjoy the same film, fashion, brands and TV program. Differences between countries have become less evident. Do you think the disadvantage of this outweigh the advantage?
Nowadays, people all over the world share the same Hollywood movies and fashion. When some people are cheering the colorful life which the cultural globalization brings, others raise doubts about it. To my mind, cultural globalization?s disadvantages outweigh its advantages.
On the one hand, cultural globalization has a lot of advantages. First of all, globalization is a vital process toward transferring knowledge and education throughout the world. Secondly, people can enjoy cultural achievements by artists all over the world, such as films, TV programs, music, opera etc. Finally, the exchange of culture could enhance mutual understanding, create goodwill and remove the hostility and prejudice between different nations.
On the other hand, people who are against the cultural globalization have their own reasons. Firstly, the cultural globalization may extinguish cultural individuality and diversity of minor countries and minority groups. It is reported 90% of the world?s languages are not represented on the Internet; five main countries monopolize the world cultural industries trade and in the field of cinema, for instance, 88 countries out of 185 in the world have never had their own film production. Moreover, globalization erodes local languages and promotes ?Global? English. A recent study published by the University of Hong Kong demonstrates that more than 80% of 6000 languages in the world are dying out because of globalization/ under threat of extinction. Last but not least, globalization has produced adverse effects on local cultural tradition and civilizations. Some people assert that the globalization actually is, to a large extent, Americanization and make it extremely difficult to maintain cultural integrity and religious identity. For example, Beijing Opera, one of most famous traditional arts of China, has gradually lost its attraction to young people.
In my opinion, although the cultural globalization has some positive influences on our lives, we can not neglect the negative effect on local culture.
2. Even though Globalization affects the world’s economics in a very positive way, its negative sides should not be forgotten, discuss.
Everything has tow sides in the world, and so has the process of globalization too. The effects of globalization for the world economy are diverted.
We must acknowledge that the negative effects are from a different kind than the positive ones. Therefore the negative sides, like low payment in less developed countries are important to considerate.
If we take the Euro zone for example, the economic-changes according to the globalization process are huge. Many companies have transferred their factories into cheaper production easier to compete at the world market. The results are rising unemployment rates in the “old industrial countries”.
In regard to the other countries on the world market, like China, this job transfer is a big opportunity. But no one can deny that the consequences for the less developed countries with flourished economy, based on
availability of cheap employees are highly important: Globalization based on this fact brings environmental problems.
Nevertheless there are also positive reasons for global effects. In general it is remarkable that there is a new tendency in “Thinking Global”. For instance people are willing to learn more languages and about other cultures. Countries formally known as undeveloped, like India, are getting chances to be the main leader in a certain field.
All in all it can be said that the effects of globalization are huge. The understanding of economic processes has changed completely. It is important to think in bigger terms, not just about the own country. The positive things that this globalization process has brought must be sensible us for the negative sides. The all over aim should be a world in balance, but this will be a long way. (6.5分)
3 Nowadays we can enjoy the same films, fashions, brands, advertisements and TV channels. The evident difference between countries is disappearing. To what extent do you think the disadvantages overweight the advantages of this?
Globalization creates conditions for widening international exchanges, strengthening mutual understanding between nations, expanding cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation between nations and countries, enjoying the cultural achievements of people around the world which encourages the process of modernization and the enrichment of national culture.
However, these conditions also create the possible danger of diminishing the national culture with a negative impact on the pre123vation of national identity. Through globalization and an open door policy, erroneous concepts and a lowering of ethical standards, a selfish and individualistic lifestyle and harmful cultural products can easily be imported into the country. At present, modern information technology which in the main is controlled by US is hourly and intensively disseminating US ideology, way of life, culture and films across the world. Even US food is promoted so that some people consider globalization as global Americanization.
During the process of economic globalization, inequality between developed and developing countries has been increasing and the gap between the rich and the poor has become wider, most of the result of globalization go to assist developed countries. Globalization does not pose equal interests and risks to all nations. With an overwhelming advantage compared to most of the developing countries in terms of finance and the level of science and technology, developed ca123alist countries control the situation of economic globalization.
For these reasons, globalization is a fierce and complicated struggle in both cultural and ideological fields. We take the initiative in international economic integration but also have to take the initiative in fighting to keep our distinct culture resisting pro-foreign and cross-bred phenomena, and overcoming the psychology of preferring money over ethical values.
