《大学英语教学大纲修订本》对语言测试的目的作了清晰的阐释：语言测试重点考核学生的语言基础和语言应用能力。所谓的语言应用能力，是指“综合运用语言基础知识进行读、听、说、写、译等语言活动的能力”。“在培养读、听、说、写、译等各项技能时，既要强调掌握和应用语言知识的准确性，又要注意应用语言时的流利程度和得体性。”就写作而言，最主要的问题就是语言的“准确性”和“得体性”。

在过去的考试中，考生普遍存在的突出问题依然是语言错误较多，缺乏自如地驾驭英语语言的能力。

四级作文采用总体评分（Global Scoring）方法，阅卷教师就总的印象给出奖励分（Reward Scores）, 从内容和语言两个方面对作文进行综合评判，而不是按语言点的错误数目扣分。要考虑作文是否切题，是否充分表达思想，也要考虑是否运用英语“准确”而“得体”地表达思想，也就要考虑语言上的错误是否造成理解上的障碍。

评分标准分为五档：2分、5分、8分、11分和14分。阅卷教师参照样卷对考生的作文进行评分，首先确定作文和哪个档次的样卷最为接近，再根据评分原则上下浮动。

14分-------漂漂亮亮：切题，思想表达清楚，文字通顺，连贯性好，基本

无语言错误，或仅有个别小错。

11分--------清清楚楚：切题，思想表达清楚，文字连贯，但有少量语言错 误。

8分---------马马虎虎：基本切题，有些地方表达不够清楚，文字勉强连贯，

语言错误相当多，其中有一些是严重错误。

5分---------糊里糊涂：基本切题，思想表达不清楚，连贯性差，有较多严

重语言错误。

2分---------一塌糊涂：条理不清，思路紊乱，语言支离破碎或大部分句子

都有错误，且多数为严重错误。
