  Chinese table manners

These are mostly concerned with the use of chopsticks.

Otherwise generally Chinese table manners are rather more informal, what would be considered rude in other cultures such as talking with the mouth full may be acceptable but better not to do so.

  * Chopsticks must always be held in the correct manner.

It should be held between the thumb and fingers of the right hand,

  * Chopsticks are traditionally held in the right hand only, even by the left-handed.

Although chopsticks may now be found in either hand,a few still consider left-handed chopstick use improper etiquette.

One explanation for the treatment of such usage as improper is that this can symbolise argument,as the chopsticks may collide between the left-handed and right-handed user.

  China Dining Custom

  Table Manners

The main difference between Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has their own plate of food,in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares.

If you are being treated by a Chinese host,be prepared for a ton of food.

Chinese are very proud of their culture of cuisine and will do their best to show their hospitality.

And sometimes the Chinese host use their chopsticks to put food in your bowl or plate.

This is a sign of politeness.

The appropriate thing to do would be to eat the whatever-it-is and say how yummy it is.

If you feel uncomfortable with this, you can just say a polite thank you and leave the food there.

To this end, grasp the knowledge of the rules in some Chinese restaurants have become particularly important, whether you are a master, or merely a guest, must have some rules.

  The round table is popular.

Because they can sit more people, and we can sit face to face, the head of the family identity and not long shaped the West on the table very clearly through his seat and identification.

Guests should be invited to sit down and wait for the owner.

The owner must be careful not to call the guests sitting in a seat near the table.

  This is a taboo.

Will have to wait until all the people here can only be the beginning of any form of dining activities -- even if they have to wait for being late.

Once you master home place, can do the prologue.

During the meal, the owner must assume a proactive role -- urging guests enjoy eating and drinking is entirely reasonable.

In a typical Chinese-style table looks quite empty, in the eyes of Westerners, especially.

Each seat can be seen on the front wheel on a bowl; right is a set of chopsticks and spoons, were placed in their own seat.

In formal occasions, there will be napkins, mainly on the lap.

In a formal banquet, the dishes of eating like a slide show, each time a dish.

Surprisingly, rice, not with the dishes ibid, but you can choose to eat the same.

As the dishes have their special characteristics, it should be for individual taste, but once only from a bowl to eat, not mixed taste.

Plate is not available to eat, can only bowl.

Bones and shells on the individual disk.

Not clean the dishes must always be replaced with clean plates.

Chinese table manners of families have no intrinsic quality even there are different region and position. No matter three meals a day or guest’s arrival, always bowls with chopsticks, food with soup. There is no rule for how to put the tableware. What people care about more are not the gorgeous tableware but the sumptuous food. People’s dining position reflects the most obvious etiquette of Chinese table manners. In ancient society, men are supreme, and women are not allowed to sit with men on the same table. Although this is modern society, this kind of ancient etiquette still remains. Today in China, the phenomenon that men sit on the table before women can be found everywhere. The master of a family usually sits on the first-class seat. The first-class seat is usually near the interior of a room facing to the door. Once there is a guest, the master will offer the first-class seat to the guest politely. If it is an ordinary meal of family, families should start after the elder. If there is a guest, the master offer the food to the guest is essential from the beginning to the end. And the tradition of urging others to drink is also a special phenomenon.

  Table Manners

The main difference between Chinese and western eating habits is that unlike the West, where everyone has their own plate of food, in China the dishes are placed on the table and everybody shares. If you are being treated by a Chinese host, be prepared for a ton of food.

  Eating No-no's

Don't stick your chopsticks upright in the rice bowl.Instead, lay them on your dish. The reason for this is that when somebody dies, the shrine to them contains a bowl of sand or rice with two sticks of incense stuck upright in it. So if you stick your chopsticks in the rice bowl, it looks like this shrine and is equivalent to wishing death upon a person at the table!

Make sure the spout of the teapot is not facing anyone. It is impolite to set the teapot down where the spout is facing towards somebody. The spout should always be directed to where nobody is sitting, usually just outward from the table.

Don't tap on your bowl with your chopsticks.Beggars tap on their bowls, so this is not polite. Also, when the food is coming too slow in a restarant, people will tap their bowls. If you are in someone's home,it is like insulting the cook.

  Drinking

Gan Bei! (Cheers! “Gan Bei” literally means “dry [the] glass”) Besides beer, the official Chinese alcoholic beverage is Bai Jiu,high-proof Chinese liquor made fromassorted grains. There are varying degrees of Bai Jiu. The Beijing favorite is called Er Guo Tou, which is a whopping 56% alcohol. More expensive are Maotai and Wuliangye.

Of course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that’s only superficial. Besides, in decent restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you’re in the country for the first time, he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.

The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes, to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes. Soup then will be served (unless in Guangdong style restaurants) to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings. If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes, you should say so in good time, for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.

Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests. In formal dinners, there are always “public” chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food. If you do not eat it, just leave the food in the plate. People in China tend to over - order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. When you have had enough, just say so. Or you will always overeat!

Difference of table etiquette between eastern and western cultures.

There are differences and similarities between the etiquette at table between the eastern and western cultures. To raise a few examples, we could talk about the differences of both cultures. Westerners would use silverware such as forks, knives and soup spoons, which are made of stainless steel.Easterners would use chopsticks and soup spoons. In certain part of Southern Asia, people eat with their hands.

Dinner table and table seating arrangements are different between the two customs. The dinner table for the west is mostly rectangle while the east is round.

In addition, there are differences in the ways foods are served between the two cultures, the westerners serve dinner by courses and one course, or plate, is served after another. Each person has his own choice or portion of his foods served separately. However, the eastern culture, or the Chinese culture, has the foods served very much at the same time and they are not served separately to each individually. Therefore, in a Chinese meal, the foods are shared among the people at the table. It is considered bad manner for a person to use his chopsticks turning foods in a plate upside down to pick what he likes.

As for the similarities, both cultures would consider impolite for a person to put his elbows on the table or to talk with foods in his mouth.

As we know ,there are so many differences between culture of the East and West that I can not list all of their different aspects.I will focus on the differences of diet custom and teaching system. For your better understanding ,I will set examples of China and America.

It is no doubt that it is a tradition to use chopsticks for Chinese. But people in America prefer to forks and knives. This different result is based on different food they are like .Americans choose to eat beefsteak, bread, and salad, while Chinese people choose noodles ,pancakes and rice. What is more, the custom of drinking tea in China and drinking coffee in America are stand out particularly. However, there is a trend that the food in both countries has been mixture. For example, the coffee and bread have introduced to China. The famous KFC is very popular at children.

The gap of teaching system between China and America is big.Chinese students always complain about their homework.Too much homework has limited the time to exercise and relax. They have to recite many things as to get a high mark.Homework comes the first to them.

In my opinion, the study in America is more interesting .Teachers pay attentions to training students skills in thinking in realastic life not to emphasis on the importances of memories. In a addition, the rate of going to school ,the salary of teaching ,and the job of gruduates are quite different, too.I should say that Chima government should make great efforts to improve its teaching syetem.I am also expect to be one day ,the West give more cheers to our country.
