Passage 2 (4.5

People today, in all this new world of technology and thinking, have lost sight of what a true friendship is. I thought I would help the world out a little and told them what real, true friends are.

Friends don’t have to be exactly the same. Friends have similarities but they also have their differences. The key to opening up the world of friendship is not only to expand similarities but also to accept each other’s faults.

Friends have to argue! No one likes to argue but it is necessary to have a healthy friendship, because if you agree on everything, either you aren’t being true to each other or then something isn’t quite right.

Friends love unconditionally. They have their little angry moments but what’s done is done and all is forgotten. Why let something that happened in the past ruin what happiness you could have in the future?

Believe in love at first sight because the same thing happens in friendship. Some people think that you have to know someone really well to become good friends. Trust me, it’s not true.

These are only a few of the basic. Just remember, friends are forever. Don’t disrespect your friends, love them instead.

A. happy B. strange C. unlucky D. uncomfortable

A. be honest B. not argue

C. be similar to each other D. always love each other

3. We can know from the passage that ___________.

B. loving your friends is loving yourself

C. true friends don’t need to communicate

D. true friends only have similarities

Passage 3 (6

Everyone needs friends. As the old saying goes, “No man is an island”. In other words, no one can survive without the help or friendship of others. One can hardly live without a friend. Society is made up of people, and making friends is a very important part in our life. Friends can give you a lot. Firstly, if you have trouble with some problems, you can talk to your good friends and exchange opinions. Thus you will feel comfortable and encouraged. Secondly, if you wish to do some physical exercises, such as playing table tennis, you can play with friends and have a good time. In short, we need friends.

But what is true friendship? Some people think friends are people whom they can play with, others believe true friendship lies in common interests. However, in my opinion, “a friend in need is a friend indeed”. True friendship can encourage you when you are in difficulties. True friends can give you warnings against danger. True friends not only share with you your joy and happiness but also your trouble and anxiety. When you need him, he will give you a hand and

1. What does the author want to tell us by saying, “No man is an island”?

A. To form an island, we need more than one man.

B. Without friendship, people can not live on an island.

C. Friends can make you feel comfortable and encouraged.

D. Everyone needs friendship.

2. What kind of friends are true friends according to the author?

A. People whom you can play with. B. A friend in need.

C. Friends who have common interests.

D. Friends who treat you the same as you treat them.

3. What does the underlined phrase “spare no efforts” mean?

A. Try one’s best. B. Make no efforts. C. Ask for pay back. D. Go away.

4. True friends should NOT _______.

C. get into trouble together D. keep silent when their friends are in danger

5. The passage is mainly about ________.

A. why it is important to make friends B. how to tell who are true friends

C. how to keep friendship D. both A and B

Passage 4 American friendship (5

Different countries have different opinions about friends. So you must know how to get along with a foreign friend. Let’s see how Americans view friendship. It’s quite natural for Americans to move their home to different places. Very few people live in just one place for a lifelong time. That is why Americans are always ready to make new friends. They often pay a visit to their new neighbors, and friendship will be established during chatting, taking interesting sports and small family parties.

Americans are very independent. You’d better not be so curious about their privacy, such as salaries, diseases and ages, because it’s none of your business. If you try to find the privacy of an American, most probably, you will be regarded as an immoral(不道德的) person.

Americans will be willing to help their friends. But most of the time, they hope that the helping would be about small things. It’s maybe uncomfortable, even very strange, to shoulder much more so-called responsibilities for a friend.

If your friend is an American student, never ask about his or her grades in school. It’s not

only because that American schools have no tradition of having a long mark list for all the students, but also, grades are a sort of privacy.

True (T) or False (F)

1. Americans sometimes make friends at small family parties.

2. Americans are always ready to help their friends with anything.

答案:Passage 2: DDA Passage 3: DBADD Passage 4: T F

Summarize the rules of Direct Speech and Indirect Speech.

3. Teaching difficult point

Learn about the special cases in which the tenses shouldn’t be changed.

4. Teaching methods

Discussing, summarizing and practicing.

5. Teaching procedures

Step1 Lead in

T: In the last lesson, we learned Anne Frank’s story. She is telling her stories to two of her friends—you and Tom. Tom has something wrong with his ears,so you have to repeat Anne’s sentences, using indirect speech. Sometimes you explain Tom’s sentences to Anne.

“I have to stay in the hiding place.” said Anne. →

Anne said she had to stay in the hiding place.

“Do you feel sad when you are not able to go outdoors?” Tom asked Anne. → Tom asked Anne if/whether she felt sad when she was not able to go outdoors. “I don’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary,” said Anne.→ Anne said that she didn’t want to set down a series of facts in a diary. “What do you call your diary?” Tom asked. →

Tom asked what she called her diary.

Ss go on this topic by themselves.

Step2 Grammar

T: Now let’s look at these sentences again. If we want to change Direct Speech into Indirect Speech, what should be changed?

Ss discuss by themselves.

Ss: sentence structures, tenses, pronouns, adverbials of time and place and verbs

should be changed.

T: Quite right. Look at the form on the screen. These are the rules.

She said, "I am very happy to help you."→

She said that she was very happy to help you.

He asked me, "Do you like playing football?"→

He asked me if/whether I liked playing football.

She asked me whether he could do it or not.

3. 直接引语是特殊疑问句,变成间接引语时,由相应的疑问词who, whom, whose, how, when, why, where 等引导。例如:

My sister asked me, "How do you like the film?"→

My sister asked me how I liked the film.

The captain ordered, "Be quiet."→

The captain ordered us to be quiet.

My teacher asked me, "Don't laugh."→

My teacher asked me not to laugh.

He asked Lucy, "Where did you go?"→

He asked Lucy where she went.

Tom said, "What do you want, Ann?"→

Tom asked Ann what she wanted.

They told their son, "The earth goes round the sun."→

They told their son that the earth goes round the sun.

He said, "I haven't seen her today."→

He said that he hadn't seen her that day.

Direct Speech Indirect Speech

Present past

Past past and past perfect

Present perfect past perfect

Past perfect past perfect

Step3 practice

T: Turn to Page 5. Please change the following direct speech into indirect speech and indirect into direct.

2. “I don’t know the address of my new home,” said Anne.

3. “I cannot ask my father because it is not safe to know,” she said.

9. Anne asked her sister how she could see her friends.

10. Mother asked Anne why she had gone to bed so late the night before.

Step4 Correcting mistakes

T analyses the common mistakes Ss have made during the practice.

T: Now let’s look at the screen and pay attention to these sentences. Choose the right sentence and tell me why the other one is wrong.

Step5 A game

Play a guessing game “who is my secret friend?” One student comes to the front with his partner.

The rest students ask him questions while his partner changes them into indirect speech. In the end, the person who has guessed the right answer can come to the front to take the place of the first student .So the game goes on.

Suggested sentences:

Can your friend speak?

What does he/she wear today?

Is he/she tall or short?

What do you and your friend do in your free time?

Do you quarrel with each other?...

Step6 Homework

Do Exercise1 on Page 42. Here is another page of Anne’s diary. Read it through and then use indirect speech to retell the story.

Period 5 Listening & Writing

1. Teaching objectives

To practise students’ listening ability.

To practise students’ writing skills of how to offer advice.

To improve students’ ability to help others solve problems.

2. Teaching procedure

(Analysis: Listening and writing are expansion of the topic of the text. Listening is about Lisa’s problem of making a friend with a boy. She asks Miss Wang for advice. Through listening and exercise, students learn how to give advice and the skill of giving advice. And also let them think about the problem of boy’s making friends with girls and girls with boys. And then design a task to ask students to give advice according to the different problems to practise their ability to solve the problems. All of these lay the foundation for the next task writing. In this way, students feel that they have information to put out. And writing makes for the improvement of students’ writing ability, strengthening their comprehension of friendship.)

Step 1 Lead-in

Do you remember what Ann’s best friend is?

Is it a man or a thing?

Have you seen the film Cast Away?

When Tom is alone on a deserted island, what does he make friends with? ( a volleyball)

Guess what my best friend is? (Say sth. about music, pets or plants.)

So you see a man can make friends with anyone and anything.

Then boys, would you like to make friends with girls? Girls, would you like to make friends with boys?

What kind of girl would you like to make friends with? And what kind of boy would you like to make friends with?

If you see a boy classmate makes a friend with a girl, will you say something about them behind?

(If no, say you are kind. If yes, say you are a gossiper.)

If you are that boy/girl, would you like to be gossiped about?

But here Lisa has such a problem. Read the letter. Lisa is asking you for help. What advice will you give? You are given 2 minutes to discuss in groups and then offer group’s opinions.

Step 2 Listening
