Stress As the pace of life continues to increase in the modern society, we are fast losing the art of relaxation. Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night, it is very hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body. Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it.In fact, it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be. A certain amount of stress is vital to provide one with motivation and give purpose to life. It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health. The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress at all, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities. Others lose heart at the first signs of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress, in whatever form, we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make a choice between “flight” or “fight”. In more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress, it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered. Such serious conditions as high blood pressure and heart disease have established links with stress. Since we can not remove stress from our

lives( it would be unwise to do so even if we could),we need to find ways to deal with it in order that we can stay healthy in mind and body.

Many people think that when they become rich and successful, happiness will naturally follow. Let me tell you that nothing is further from the truth. The world is full of very rich people who are as miserableas if they were living in hell. We have read stories about movie stars who committedsuicide or died from drugs. Happiness is not an end; it is a process. It is a continuousprocess of honest, productive work which makes a real contribution to others and makes you feel you are a useful, worthy person. As Dr. Wayne wrote, “There is no

way to happiness. Happiness is the way.”“Some day when I achievethese goals, when I get a car, build a house and own my own business, then I will be really happy.”Life just does not work that way. The air we breathe is so freely available that we take it for granted. Yet without it we could not survive more than a few minutes. Types of University Students

University students are different. They come from different parts of the country, speak various dialects, and follow their distinctive regional customs. However, a closer look at their purposes of learning at university will enable us to classify them roughly into three groups: those who learn out of instinct, those who learn for a promising future, and those who learn with no definite purposes.

Firstly, there are a handful of students who learn without fatigue simply because they like to learn. They read a great deal of British and American novels because they are keenly interested in literature. Others sit in front of the computer screen, working on one new program after another all day and all night because they have discovered beauty in complicated signal patterns, and dream of becoming “Bill Gates” one day.

Secondly, there are job-oriented who work hard for a better career. It is arguable that the majority of university students fall into this category. After enrolling in the hottest specialty of the moment, they throw themselves into books, whether they like them or not, so as to absorb the most knowledge and to obtain all the available certificates, which may serve as a competitive edge in the cut-throat human resources market in four years’ time.

Thirdly, there is a small fraction of students who learn without an aim. They take courses, finish assignments, enjoy life on campus, but lead a directionless life. They do not know what they are doing, nor what they are willing to do, nor what they will be doing after college. They are a group of “sleepers”.

Students from all parts of the country gather in the same university. After four years, they part to continue their various lives. However, it is almost certain that those who learn out of instinct will be happy, those who learn with a determination will be professionally successful at least, and those who learn without an aim will end up with nothing.

4. My First Day on the Campus

Since 1990, there has been tremendous growth in the use of computers by students. While in 1990, the average number of hours a student spent on the computer was about one hour per week, this number grew to nearly four hours per week by 1995, and to approximately 20 hours per week by the year 2000.

An Eye-witness Account of a Traffic Accident

Yesterday afternoon, I happened to witness a terrible traffic accident on my way home from school. It was 5:30 p.m., I was riding my favorite Giant back home. Built in 1994 and opened to the public in 1995, it is now the highest building in Shanghai and the third highest in Asia. The Tower has a quite unique structure and consists of 3 large and 5 small balls. Inside the balls, you can have a bird's eye view of the city.

Our schedule for the trip to the TV Tower is as follows: you have an hour form 9:30-10:30am to experience the history of Shanghai on the first floor. Then we'll assemble in the middle of the hall at 10:30 and have another hour to overlook the beautiful city sceneries in the middle ball. Finally please do remember to go to the top ball at 11:30 to enjoy your lunch.

Thank you for coming to this election campaign today. With the trust and complete support of my team, I am delighted to announce that I am running for chairman of the Student Union.

As a diligent man with pleasant personality, I have been always considered to be a good team member. Meanwhile, as a big fan of sports I fully realize the importance of teamwork and advocate the spirit of being quicker and stronger. I possess strong determination to take firm steps toward achieving the objectives of my team. In addition, my working experience with the Student Union in the past two years will be extremely helpful to my future work here if I get elected.

It is Teacher's Day today. On this special occasion I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all teachers, "Happy Teacher's Day!"

Of all teachers who have taught me since my early childhood, the most unforgettable one is my first English teacher in college, Ms. Zhang. It is she who has aroused my keen interest in the learning of English and helped me realize the importance of self-reliance. Born into a poor farmer's family in a mountainous area and educated in relatively primitive surroundings, I found myself lagging far behind in the first class in college, which happened to be Ms. Zhang's English class. I was really discouraged and frustrated, so I decided to drop out. Ms. Zhang was so keenly insightful that she had noticed my embarrassment in class. After class, she called me into the Teacher's Room and discussed the situation with me, earnestly and kindly, citing the example of Robinson Crusoe to motivate me to go ahead in spite of all kinds of difficulties. "Be a man and rely on yourself," she nudged me. The next time we met, she brought me a simplified version of Robinson Crusoe and recommended that I finish reading it in a week and write a book report. Under her consistent and patient guidance, not only has my English been greatly improved, but my confidence and courage enhanced considerably.

"Rely on yourself and be a man," Ms. Zhang's inspiring words have been echoing in my mind. I will work harder and try my utmost to lay a solid foundation for my future career.
