An Analysis of A Psalm of Life

Composed by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in 1838 and one year later published anonymously, A Psalm of Life was created in the American capitalism era into its booming period. It comes from the volume Voices of the Night. In 1835 Henry lost his first wife owing to abortion which once brought him tremendous grief. However, misfortune never knocked once. Five years later in his pursuit of Appleton who became his second wife Henry also encountered a lot of twists and turns. Having mixed feelings, feeling that life is full of frustration, hear, Henry wrote down this poem in order to encourage people to make unremitting efforts in the life path.

A Psalm of Life is in a rigorous, clear, distinct, reasoning and exquisite verse with persuasiveness and refinement.

Expounding the upward, positive enterprising, optimistic attitude to health against negative nihilistic thoughts of the life philosophy, the whole verse is in a solemn and serious style. The poet depicted from

several angles, deeply revealed the positive meaning of life in 9 stanzas. Stanza 1 ~ 3 can be regarded as the first layer which suggests the poet's fundamental views on life and what life is. The second level (stanza 4 ~ 6) was undertaken to clarify how to spend your life. The Third layer (stanza 7 ~ 8) highlighted the interpretation of the value of life. The Fourth layer (stanza 9) constitutes a single section, voicing the poet's strong urge and enthusiasm which urges people to cheer up, take action, and be brave to face any challenge in fate.

For me, to simply generalize, it is the original version of Chicken Soup in a tone of a young man. For example the repetition of “real life” and “ Art is long , and Time is fleeting” such rhythms persuade readers to seize the day and be up and doing. I show preference for this poem because not only is it refine and exquisite, readable at one sitting, but it evokes a strong appeal to raise optimistic morale and enterprising spirit towards life which also makes it widely circulated in the United States from the 1840 s, till now.
