Story:As I Lay Dying(the word "I" refers to Addie,a dying women)

About the Author:William Cuthbert Faulkner (born Falkner, September 25, 1897 – July 6, 1962)

Literature period:Modernism period

Schools of literature:stream of consciousness

Brief introduction:The book focuses on the journey conveying Addie's coffin to Town Jefferson .

Publication date:1930

Protagonists:

Addie Bundren – Addie is the wife of Anse and the mother of Cash, Darl, Jewel, Dewey Dell, and Vardaman. She had an extramarital affair with her preacher Reverend Whitfield which led to the conception and birth of her third child, Jewel. As the central character, Addie's internal monologue appears only once, when she is dead, with a flashback to look back to her unfortunate life. When Addie is very young, both of her parents die, thus she makes her bread as a local teacher in Jefferson. Once she meets Anse Bundren by chance, a man who shares a similar orphan experience, she gets married to him. After the marriage, she doesn't gain any happiness she expects to, but indulges in her sense of loneliness even worse, unable to let herself go.She hates life, hates his husband, hates childbearing.Endless pleading guilty and confession lead to her extramarital affair with a local minister, giving birth to her third son Jewel. She devotes all her love to Jewel, even develops an abnormal independence on him.To counteract her sense of guilty, she again brings a forth and a fifth kids into

the world, respectively Dewey Dell and Vardaman for her husband.Addie has no belief in religion nor love, finally she accepts what her father once says,"The situation of living only serves to the preparation of an eternal sleep."Deeply is she convinced the only approach to extrication is death. For the purpose of keeping herself from the family, or to revenge for her solitude being invaded, she swears to the Burdren to transfer her dead body to Town Jefferson.

Main character:always feels solitary, hopeless and depressed about life since her marriage and earlier orphan experiences,no religious belief, longing to free herself through death.

Anse Bundren – Anse is Addie's widower, the father of all the children but Jewel. After suffering a severe enough sunstroke at the age of 22, it is likely he developed anhidrosis (the physical inability to sweat). This disease, along with Anse's hunchback, splayed, nailless toes, and toothless mouth, are all corporeal markers of his economic status and life of labor.

Main character:coward, selfish, mean, shows no understanding and sympathy of her wife and children, fond of boasting his promise in front of others.

Cash Bundren – Cash is a skilled and helpful carpenter and the eldest son of the family, in his late twenties, who builds Addie's coffin.

Main character:honest, slow-witted and straightforward, represents amazing endurance when encountering with obstacles, representing a soundless love for his mother, skillful in handwork

Darl Bundren – The second eldest of Addie's children, Darl is about two years younger than Cash.

Main character: psychologically disordered and eccentric ,has a talented deep insight to foretell and understand everything, including her sister's intention to

abortion or the burial journey

Jewel Bundren – Jewel is the third of the Bundren children, and is most likely around nineteen years of age. A half-brother to the other children and the favorite of Addie, he is the illegitimate son of Addie and Reverend Whitfield.Jewel has a nature of arrogance and grumpiness, antipathetic to his family members. His supercilious heart turns to extreme considering his identity. To get rid of inferiority, he woks for his neighbour and buys a horse, with which he feels proud. But it is the outwardly unfilial son that saves his mother's corpse from the fire and flood. When Cash's cherished carpentry tools sank into the river, Jewel risks his life to dive into and find.Again he sacrifices his beloved horse to exchange two mules to pull the cart.He demonstrates his love with his practical actions, but also vents his anger towards them.

Main character:cold, irritable and incompatible with the family, the humiliated birth adds him to disdain and rage, paying no attention to her mother's death, but contradictorily saved her corpse twice and dived into the river for Cash's tools,in short,he has an ambivalent personality.

Dewey Dell Bundren – Dewey Dell is the only daughter of Anse and Addie Bundren.

Main character:selfish ,timid, and negative, submitting to the will of Heaven, resentful to her fate, eager for being understood but doubtful for exposing her detestation when Anse deprived of her abortion money

Vardaman Bundren – Vardaman is the youngest Bundren child, somewhere between seven and ten years old.

Main character:a mentally handicapped child, innocent and vagarious about the people, confused in psychological activity,as fatuous as treating his mother as a fish so

to drill on the coffin for Addie to breathe

Supports:

Vernon Tull – Vernon is a good friend of the Bundrens

Cora Tull – Cora is the wife of Vernon Tull, a neighbor of Addie's

Peabody – Peabody is the Bundren's doctor.

Lafe – Lafe is a farmer who impregnates Dewey Dell and gives her $10 to get an abortion.

Whitfield – Whitfield is the local reverend with whom Addie had an affair, which results in the birth of Jewel.

Samson – Samson is a local farmer who lets the Bundren family stay with him the first night on their journey to Jefferson.

Setting: the story is set in Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, after the death of the female main character Addie Bundren, the whole family encountered a series of odd experiences when taking the coffin to Addie's hometown of Jefferson, according to her last wish.

Narrator:Fifteen characters take turns narrating the story in streams of consciousness over the course

Events in summary:

(1)Addie Bundren, the wife of Anse Bundren and the matriarch of a poor southern family, is very ill, and is expected to die soon. Her oldest son, Cash, puts all of his carpentry skills into preparing her coffin, which he builds right in front of Addie's bedroom window. Shortly after Darl and Jewel leave, Addie dies. The youngest Bundren child, Vardaman, associates his mother's death with a fish he caught and

cleaned earlier that day. With some help, Cash completes the coffin just before dawn. Vardaman is troubled by the fact that his mother is nailed shut inside a box, and while the others sleep, he bores holes in the lid, two of which go through his mother's face. Addie and Anse's daughter, Dewey Dell, whose recent sexual liaisons with a local farmhand named Lafe have left her pregnant, is so overwhelmed by anxiety over her condition that she barely mourns her mother's death.

(2)Darl, who narrates much of this first section, returns with Jewel a few days later, and the presence of buzzards over their house lets them know their mother is dead. Addie has made Anse promise that she will be buried in the town of Jefferson, and though this request is a far more complicated proposition than burying her at home, Anse's sense of obligation, combined with his desire to buy a set of false teeth, compels him to fulfill Addie's dying wish. Cash, who has broken his leg on a job site, helps the family lift the unbalanced coffin, but it is Jewel who ends up manhandling it into the wagon.

(3)On the first night of their journey, the Bundrens stay at the home of a generous local family, due to severe flooding, the main bridges have been flooded or washed away, and the Bundrens are forced to turn around and attempt a river-crossing over a makeshift ford. When a stray log upsets the wagon, the coffin is knocked out, Cash's broken leg is reinjured, and the team of mules drowns. Vernon Tull sees the wreck, and helps Jewel rescue the coffin and the wagon from the river. Together, the family members and Tull search the riverbed for Cash's tools.

(4)Addie herself, speaking either from her coffin or in a leap back in time to her deathbed, recalls events from her life: her loveless marriage to Anse; her affair with the local minister, Whitfield, which led to Jewel's conception; and the birth of her various children. Whitfield recalls traveling to the Bundrens' house to confess the affair to Anse, and his eventual decision not to say anything after all.

(5)A horse doctor sets Cash's broken leg, while Cash faints from the pain without ever complaining. Anse is able to purchase a new team of mules by mortgaging his farm

equipment, using money that he was saving for his false teeth and money that Cash was saving for a new gramophone, and trading in Jewel's horse. The family continues on its way. While the family is in town, Dewey Dell tries to buy a drug that will abort her unwanted pregnancy, but the pharmacist refuses to sell it to her, and advises marriage instead. With cement the family has purchased in town, Darl creates a makeshift cast for Cash's broken leg, which only increases Cash's pain. The Bundrens then spend the night at a local farm owned by a man named Gillespie. Darl, burns down the Gillespie barn with the intention of incinerating the coffin and Addie's rotting corpse. Jewel rescues the animals in the barn, then risks his life to drag out Addie's coffin. Darl lies on his mother's coffin and cries.

(6)The next day, the Bundrens arrive in Jefferson and bury Addie. Rather than face a lawsuit for Darl's criminal barn burning, the Bundrens claim that Darl is insane, and commit him to a Jackson mental institution. Dewey Dell tries again to buy an abortion drug at the local pharmacy, where a boy working behind the counter claims to be a doctor and tricks her into exchanging sexual services for what she soon realizes is not an actual abortion drug. The following morning, the children are greeted by their father, who buys a new set of false teeth and, with a mixture of shame and pride, introduces them to his new bride, a local woman he meets while borrowing shovels with which to bury Addie.

Tone:

Fifteen people take turns to tell the story, the Bundrens, the doctor, the minister, the neighbors, whose internal monologues are literally easy to understand, though in various tones.

For instance,Darl's video-like speaking tone,he is the only one who tells the story in an objective view ,apart from his personal opinions ,while others discuss themselves or other people more subjectively. From behind pa's leg Vardaman peers, his mouth

full open and all color draining from his face into his mouth, as though he has by some means fleshed his own teeth in himself, sucking. He begins to move slowly backward from the bed, his eyes round, his pale face fading into the dusk like a piece of paper pasted on a failing wall, and so out of the door.

And Dewey Dell's tone is more related to her own experience, even stronger emotion than her mother's dying, here she thinks a loud lots of repetitive words which reveal a confounded feelings of hesitance and self-deceit,glutted with insecurity and nervosity. It's because I am alone. If I could just feel it, it would be different, because I would not be alone. But if I were not alone, everybody would know it. And he could do so much for me, and then I would not be alone. Then I could be all right alone. I would let him come in between me and Lafe, like Darl came in between me and Lafe, and so Lafe is alone too. He is Lafe and I am Dewey Dell, and when mother died I had to go beyond and outside of me and Lafe and Darl to grieve because he could do so much for me and he don't know it. He don't even know it.

Irony:

(1)Being a faithful Christian ,Dewey Dell doesn't have her abortion successfully, instead she was insulted by a man who passes himself off as a doctor.God doesn't come to rescue but totally abandon her.

(2)Minister Reverend Whitifeld is thought to be a "a godly man if ever one breathed God's breath",but such a holy man shall have an affair with Addie and an illegitimate child. When Addie is on her Deathbed, he concerns about whether the scandal will be released wholeheartedly, rather than her condition.

(3)Darl is naturally and physically premonitory, when the family comes to a river ,where they will have tough disaster ,he can even hear a "plaintive, musing and mournful sound" which indicates something unusual. In the end of the story, however, Darl is sent to a madhouse because of his eccentric behaviors.

Theme:The author stresses on the deep-rooted bad habits human beings born with, as well as a great courage and perseverance they possess when confronted with daily pressure.Hardly can man chooses his destiny, but he may boldly go through it and beat it. Moreover, it is the process of penetrating a hazardous life that men will see hope and light.

Symbols:The coffin might suggest Noah's Ark, and the Bundren's house which is located on the cliff is similar with the place where the ark is anchored. The sentence "There is a little daylight up here still, of the color of sulphur matches." indicates a parallel primitive atmosphere with the world before the Creation.During their journey, the family has to face and try to fight the flood back, alike Noah's adventure. What makes the twin plots different is the two opposite results. The former holy legend ends up with newly born prospect, while the latter poor Bundren family is led to a lamentable, dismayful tragedy.

Evaluation:As far as I'm concerned, it's a brilliant novel,I'm much into the format of chapters of personal psychological monologue, and the language is plain and full of local features.Though it is not a comedy, the story has a serious religion-like meaning, worth reader's deeper deliberation.
