Pride and prejudice
Pride and prejudice is the masterpiece of Jane Austen, who is the famous writer in England. This classical novel vividly reflects the town life and human relationships of England during the late of the18th century to the early of the 19th century. Due to its special style, it attracts so many readers till now.
This story mainly talks about life and marriage. Mr Bennets is an English gentleman living in the Longbourn, who has five daughters, the beautiful Jane, the clever Elizabeth, the bookish Mary, the immature Kitty and the wild Lydia, and an ignorant and ill-informed wife. Since Mr Bennets has no son, his property is entirely inherited by his distant relation, William Collins. Therefore once he is dead, his wife and daughters wouldn’t have any guarantee. However, Mrs. Bennets is always seeking the wealthy person as her daughters’ husbands. Mr Bingley is the new comer to the town with large fortune. And his friend Darcy is a conceited person who looks downed on the lower class. Although their love roads are full of twists and turns, at last Mr. Bingley and Jane fall in love with each other; Elizabeth also accept the engage of Mr. Darcy. In this novel, “pride” mainly refers to Mr. Darcy, while “prejudice” mainly refers to Elizabeth’s prejudice against Darcy.
According to the five girls’ different solutions of their own marriage, the author expresses the young ladies’ distinguished attitudes toward love
and marriage. Thus we can see the author’s value of marriage that marriage for estate, money and status is wrong, while not considering such factors is also stupid. She emphasizes the importance of the ideal marriage and regards the emotion as the fundamental factors.
In my opinion, love is pure, beautiful without any harmful motivations. And marriage needs the both parts’ trust and respect, as well as a sense of responsibility. For most people, marriage is just one chance in all their life; therefore they should think twice before it or they would be sorry for themselves.
