He wanted to traveled around the world, but his parents didn’t agree with him.In the end,he still got on the boat.

In 1660,Robinson sailed to south America, with strong wind and big waves encountered on the way;the ship’s masts blown off and turned;the companions all died.Only one person, rolled to the waves, who was survived in a nameless ,deserted and without inhabitant island. He was very hungry and cold Living in this place ,how to live?

The next day,the sun arise and the sea was calm. When the tide ebbed away,Ronbinson saw the overturned boat, half floating in the sea,was not far offshore. He found some wood to make a row

Now, at first,he needed a shelter to avoid the sun and rain.Robinson traveled all over the island, chosen a place with water, shade and also can prevent the beast’s attract and made a simple tent with wood and sail. There you can see the sea,he hoped to see passing ships so as to request rescue.

Robinson settled on the island and lived lonely. He didn’t have higher requirements, but the food he carried from broken ship soon ate up.So everyday he took the gun and dog to the forest for hunting or went to the sea done some fishing. One day he caught a goat ,not to kill it but to stocked up.Latter,he had herds of goats,so he drunk goat’s milk and ate mutton. There were some wheat carried from ship,he put them into the dirt soon it grown buds.He used this kind of wheat to repeatedly receiving. After four years,he ate his own food.

One morning,Robinson woke up by ”Friday”,there was a British ship anchor in the vicinity. He found the mutiny on the ship that seaman kidnapped the captain.Robinson and ”Friday” rescued the captain and the captain happily agreed to take them to go back to England.Robinson took the ship sailing on the sea after half a year, finally returned to England.

Comment:

Robinson’s religious belief

Religious belief combines with colonial activities so that legitimize colonial activities and makes its believers regard colonization as a glory career.

Religion combines with colonial activity is a distinguishing feature of colonial activity in the 17th and 18th century. Colonial activity promotes religion’s spread. Religion plays a necessary role in colonial activity. Religion quicken colonial activity’s path, which is to say on one hand, religion is colonist’s spiritual support, on the other hand, taken advantage of religion, colonists legalize and rationalize their colonial activities.

In this book, at the beginning, Robinson’s religious awareness is faint. Not until he was terribly ill on the isolated island, did he realize the need of religion. Then he attributed all his fortunes to God’s proaction. He became a devout of God in order to thank God and hope God can rescue him from the isolated island. He read the Bible two times a day and derived strength from the Bible when he in dangerous situation. He believed God “call on me, and I will deliver you.” 7 Robinson showed typical puritan thoughts, such as resist the lure, hard working, atonement, etc. To explore new world, to create new life, to struggle hard by one’s own hands are his “absolute truth”. On the isolated island, he nearly had no time to have a good rest. Pitching a tent, fitting bars, taming wildlife, exploring plantation, etc, he was always full of energy. Moreover, to make profit is his only purpose. He hardly ever had emotions, besides working and making profit. There was no room for love in his life. Defoe made Robinson, a common bourgeoisie, become an explorer, a ruler, a colonist, who was chosen by the God.
