BOOK REPORT 2 ON DAVID COPPERFIELD

IF ONLY LIFE SUCH AS FIRST SIGHT

Two hundred years ago, England was covered with strong darkness, just like the foggy city, London. Fortunately, the greatest English writer, Dickens, brought his favourite son, DAVID COPPERFIELD, which was almost based on his own life experience and deep cognition to British society of the nineteen century, to cultivate people ?hearts by revealing the great influence that money took on the marriage, family, and the whole society, leading British, even us in the modern society, to a right direction. What is money and what are we are considered questions in this book and it deserves us to meditate.

Dickens embodied the real social appearance at different levels by picturing David ?s whole life, sufferings and joys. And the series of tragedies are mainly resulted from money. We can get that Mr. Murdstone married David ?mother just for her money instead of herself; Emily escaped from her marriage with Stevens also because she could not repulse the enticements of money; and Sherpa degenerated step by step and eventually ended up in a prison with the addiction of money. From all of that, we can draw a conclusion that the money may be the original of all the miseries and sufferings, but actually Dickens viewed his point by the character, Micawber, who was very poor but always worked hard to

make his life easier and better. “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds ought and six, result misery.” he said so to David and also told the truth to the public. Nobody can live without money, but what on earth does money mean to us ? It is really of great importance to buy food to keep our organs and tissues functioning regularly, to pay for the tuition to get high education for a brighter future. But that ?s never enough to lost ourselves just in order to get something that is not valued by our nature.

What Micawber said just expressed Dickens ?attitude to money. One should be content with the money he has and do not expect to get more money than he should have. Because whether you are happy or not has nothing to do with the money; even in the poorest times, people also have the rights to be happy, to enjoy the life. According to a recent survey in the Internet, the happiest thing in the world is a Chinese cook lives with a Japanese woman in a British town. It showed that it is the peace of our hearts, instead of money, that deserves us to persue with every effort and it makes a point. And money is just like a witch who is full of magic that helps us forget who we are. She tended to lead us to focus on what we lost rather than what we hold in hand. Even a survivor after a severe earthquake still has a lot to cherish, his families, his friends, his hands, his feet, even his memories of families. Without money, we still can live happily. Our mood is depend on how we look at it, so do not value too mush about the money and pay more attention to your inside, which matters a lot.

Money indeed changed people a lot in this novel, from a innocent child to a

sophisticated one. But there are always some people fighting against the social trend and keeping what they are. I am greatly impressed by Bessie ?words, "Never be mean in anything; never be false; never be cruel. Avoid those three vices, Trot, and I can always be hopeful of you.", said to David. Strange but kind, she adopted David when he escaped from his stepfather, Mr. Murdstone. No matter how powerful the money is, we can resist it with a resolved heart and an undeviating faith. Bessie ?s words took a fundamental influence on David ?s whole life. Who are we must be another theme of this book. David spent his entire life to find who he really was and eventually became a writer living happily with his aunt and Bessie. But I always believe that the most beautiful senary always stays at the first place you start your journey. However, how could we go back to the same place ? So watch out every step we ? ll take now. If only life can stay what it used to be. There were no money, or no miseries and sufferings money bring about. Just be you! Yourself!
