1. Significance of the Research

As the old saying goes, “Character decides future.” The analysis from the Angle of psychology says that it has some truth in that. Jung, the famous Swiss psychologist and founder of analytical psychology said, “Sow an action, you will reap a habit;Sow a habit, you will reap a character;Sow a character, you will reap a destiny.” Today, a lot of schools set this sentence as the school motto. It has effected a great number of people. One of the famous British realism novelist,Thomas hardy, he has wrote many books about the ordinary people and their tragic fate, we can find that people’s character effected the fate deeply from these books. A wave of enthusiastic study of Hardy’s works have commenced in the last thirty years in China.Among which Tess of the d’Urbervilles attracted public attention around the academic world. The novel recounts a poor girl Tess, she was raped by Jare, who was her honke, and aslo a young ruffian.Then she went to dairy and worked as a milkman. Before long she fallen into love with Clay, who was the son of pastor, and then she got married with him. She told Clay frankly about the past on the wedding night, but was abandoned by Clay. Finally she killed Jare, and she was sentenced to be hanged.

In the creation of tragic, Hardy affirms people's feelings, the spirit of pursuiting and struggling in adversity. He tries to explore the cause of the tragedy of life. And he tries to find out ways to get rid of the plight. A lot of scholars publicized their own distinctive views on the cause of the tragedy, among which Tess’ character has been discussed and analysed intensely and widely around the academic world. Through analysing the character of Tess, we can see the complexity of her character, and it is one of the reasons of her tragedy. We can see that there are both the positive aspect and negative aspect of her character. If we can have a dialectic recognition of her character, we can aslo analysis our own character critically. Surely, we can aslo know ourself better. Besides, we can improve the downsides, and reduce troubles and damages, and maybe change our own destiny.

Lastly, the statue of Tess is aslo a miniature of women's tragic fate in the19th in England. Thus, studying the character of Tess in Tess of the D’Urbervilles is also a way to know the western culture and learn the essence of its culture.

2. Main Contents of the Research and Main Problems to Be Solved

Two issues concerning the character of Tess inTess of the D’Urbervilles will be discussed in this thesis. The first part is about the simple introduction of Hardy and his novel “Tess of the D’Urbervilles”, then it comes to the second part, it will relate the positive aspect of the character of Tess, examples which offers the reasons and some analysis. The third part comes to the discussion about the negative aspect of the character of Tess. It will aslo goes with the examples and some analysis which give support to proof of her drawbacks. Finally, I sum up the conclusion.

Many researches on the subject of character of Tess are done, especially for the positive aspect of character of Tess. Some of them discuss about the rebellious spirit of Tess. Some others explore from the perspective of psychology and behavioristics to explain the optimistic spirit of Tess. Surely, there exists the research revealing the weakness of the character of Tess, but it’s too simple. More deep meaning should be dug out of the work and more detailed analysis should be done.These two aspects will be the focus of this thesis.

3. Steps and Methods of the Research

I study the documents related with Graduation thesis on June 23th ,2014. And I study the method and principle of Expatiates on June 24th,2014. Then on June 25th and 26th, I deal with Literature research and preliminary selected topic. On June 27th , I report to the instructor about literature analysis and evaluation, and proposed topics. On June 30th , I determine the topic and deal with literature arrangement. On July 1th , I deal with the arrangement and induction of literature. On July 2th and 3th , I write and revise the thesis proposal. On July 4th , I print the thesis proposal and submit it to the instructor.

My research mainly uses literature synthesis method , I borrow the books from the library and search the internet about the related periodicals and academic monographs, then I analysis the information from all these books and periodicals.
