There is a saying goes ... [应为There is a saying which goes ...]

There are many people think that... [应为There are many people who think that... Many people think that...]

It's the major thing affects people's friendship.

When we have difficulty, someone helps you right away is the real friend.

Friendship is important for no matter rich people or poor people. [宜改为Friendship is possible, whether for rich people or for poor people.

People are not sure that whether...

4. LACK / LACKING

If people become friends, both of them won't care about money... [可改为neither of them care about money...]

In my opinion, I agree with the view that... [agree一词本身就表示说话人的观点,可将In my opinion去掉,或把后面的一半改为the view that... is right]

share many common interests [common与share属同义反复,可改为have many common interests或share many interests]

A person with good finance will not understand why his poor friend gets on a sardine-jam like bus and always choose to dine at some poor-condition restaurant at the roadsides... [

Some people believe that financial disparity affects friendship. Some believe that financial disparity doesn't affect friendship. For my part, I agree with the latter, because financial disparity doesn't affect friendship.

It is not difficult to imagine if those rich people have some poor friends with common interests. [if一词显然应该是that,不过更通顺的说法应该是It is not difficult to imagine rich people having some poor friends with similar interests.]

We won't ask people whether they have much money or not when making friends with other people. [people和other people显然应该是同指关系,后面的other people应改为them才对]

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minute to write a short essay on the topic of Elective courses to choose. You should write at least 120 words following the outline given bellow:

Elective courses to choose

With the remarkable educational reform and the increasing students? demand, universities strive to offer a variety of elective courses for students to choose. Some higher institutes provide the optional course of cross-cultural communication, and some colleges have computer science on the curriculum of elective courses

There are numerous reasons for students? selection of the courses, and I would like to explore a few of the most significant ones here. In the first place, students tend to take personal interest into consideration when they opt for an elective course. Possibly, that?s why cross-cultural communication course is so prevailing on campus. Additionally, some undergraduates attend certain optional courses for their career prospects and future development. Last but not leas

t, to make up for their required credits is another universal reason as students select a course at random.

As far as I am concerned, picking up an elective course, I am inclined to give priority to personal interest. I am taking geographic research and discovery course in that I?ve been greatly keen on science since I was a kid.

Really Bring Good Luck?”

Some people think that certian(拼写错误) numbers will bring good luck to them. Numbers such as six, eight, sixteen and eighteen are regarded as lucky numbers. There are also people who think that their success is related to certain numbers.

However, some other people think numbers have nothing to do with their luck. They believe in their own rather than“lucky numbers”. They don't do things according to certain numbers.

As far as I am concerned, I think it is a person's own business whether he believes in a certain number or not. The most important thing is that he has done the work by himself and has done it quite well. As to the belief in numbers,

it is their (前后指代不一致,应改为his) personal choice.

1、 观点鲜明的开头;

2、 紧扣主题的结尾;

1. Woman in Modern Society

Title: Woman in Modern SocietyOutline: 1) Role of women in modern society2) Prejudices and discrimination against women3) My comment

Women play an important part in modern society. Now many women are going into professions, such as medicine, law and engineering. They comprise a large part of the workers in businesses and factories. In addition, they are working up to important positions which used to be held mainly by men. There are even some businesses which are run completely be women. Clearly, women are making outstanding contributions to the progress of modern society.

There are, However, still some people who assert that men are superior to women in many ways. First, many jobs men do can hardly be done by women, who are physically not strong enough. Second, most of the world-famous scientists and statesmen are found to be males. Finally, the whole society seems to have always been dominated by men only. In their opinion, men should enjoy more rights than women do.

Personally, I'm firmly standing on the side of those woman right defenders. Since both men and women are equally important in human activities, they should be on an equal footing. (173 words)

2. Study the table

A: Study the following table carefully and write an essay of at least 150 words.

B: Your essay must be written on Answer Sheet.

C: Your essay should meet the requirements below.

1. Changes in people's daily expenses in the past five years

2. Give possible reasons for the changes.

3. Draw my own conclusions

Study the table

In the past five years, there have been great changes in people's daily expenses in XX city. According to the figures given in the table, the amount of money spent on food decreased gradually, accounting for 35 per cent in 1998. However, there was a rapid increase in clothing expenses, which made up 17% in 1998. In addition, the table shows an upward tendency in recreation expenses. The same was the case with other expenses.

What caused these remarkable changes? In my opinion, there are at least three good reasons. To begin with, with the rapid development of agriculture in China, the output of grain, fruit, vegetables, and milk has sharply increased, which contributes to the decline in their prices. Secondly, the family incomes of people both in the city and in the country have greatly risen so that people now can afford expensive clothing and some of them even want to dress in the latest fashion. Finally, as the living conditions improve, the demand for a variety of recreations is growing steadily, too.

In short, with the incomes rising continuously, people are no longer reconciled to living a simple, monotonous life. They are eager to make their life interesting and exciting. Therefore, I am sure that people will spend more money on clothing and recreations. (215 words)

3. The role of Migrant Workers

Directions: Migrant workers (外地民工) have made a great contribution to be prosperity of cities. In this part, you are to write within 10 minutes a composition of no less than 150 words about "The Role of Migrant Workers". You can agree and or disagree, completely or partially to above statement. But no matter which position you take, you should give sound supporting reasons.

The role of Migrant Workers

As is known to all, migrant workers have made a great contribution to the prosperity of cities. They are an indispensable part of our workforce. Most of them work on construction sites. There is no doubt that without migrant workers many of the construction projects would have to be held up for lack of manpower. In addition, a large number of migrant workers is a factor which stimulates the consumption of food and daily items. This helps to develop food industry and service trades in cities. All these are positive aspects of migrant workers in cities.

However, as a popular saying goes, "Everything was two sides". The same is the case with migrant workers. First, they have trouble getting their children into child care centers and schools because they are unregistered residents in the city. As you know, illiterate people, who are usually ignorant of laws, tend to make trouble concerning law and order. Seco

nd, most of the migrant workers swarm into big cities just to make money. Being ignorant and incompetent, some of them would stop at nothing to get what they want. Therefore, they are a potential threat to the peace and stability of the society.

In my opinion, in the appraisal of migrant workers, it is one-sided to affirm everything or to negate everything. We should appreciate the great contribution made by them, and at the same time pay enough attention to the problems caused by them. (240 words)

4. My First Day on the Campus

I still remember the day when I first came to the college. Being a boy of 17, I was longing for a new life as a college student; but, at the same time, I had no idea what college life would be like.

That morning when the bus carried me to the gate of the college. I was so excited that my heart was beating very fast as if it would leap out of my mouth. From now on, I would be a student of this college. After registration, we were led by an instructor to the dormitory, where, for the first time, we were going to live without parents but roommates. I was so clumsy that I did not know how to make the bed and fix the mosquito net.

In the afternoon, I took a walk around the campus together with my roommates. To think of studying in such a beautiful place made me feel quite proud of myself. As we were walking along, talking and laughing, a voice came into our ears, "Oh, look at these freshmen!" It was our middle-school-students' looking that gave us away. We continued our tour of the college, inspecting every building and every garden until the sun began to set.

In the evening, we sat together, talking about the past and the future. We were so excited that no one wanted to go to bed. 5. The Tape Recorder

The tape recorder is one of the most welcome and popular electronic devices ever invented. For example, it can reproduce sounds quite well, which are hardly distinguishable from the original. Besides, it is very handy and can be carried around. Furthermore, tape recorders are not so expensive as color TV sets or video-tape players, so most families can afford them. Therefore, the tape recorder is liked by everyone and has entered most homes.

This device is useful in many ways. For example, it is used by people to play music and thus gives them a lot of pleasure. Another example is that it is an effective aid for learning a foreign language. It may also serve as a useful tool for many professionals such as reporters and policemen and enables them to work efficiently.

However, it can also become a nuisance. Some youngsters play the tape recorder late at night and therefore disturb their neighbours' rest. Some shop-owners use it to attract customers and they often play music so loudly that customers feel very annoyed with it. Thus, the tape recorder should be put to good use.

6. Studying Abroad

Attending schools abroad has many advantages. In the first place, by looking at our own country from outside, we can best see the strong points and weak points of our nation and therefore widen our vision and broaden our minds. Second, while studying in a foreign country, we can travel widely, visiting famous scenic spots and making friends with the local people. Thirdly we can use the foreign language in our daily life so that our ability in the second language may be improved quickly. But the most important thing in attending a foreign university is to get acquainted with the latest knowledge in science and technology and make use of the first-rate facilities available. For all these advantages, it is really worthwhile to go abroad for education.

However, as everything has two sides, there are also some disadvantages in attending a foreign university. The most serious problem is the language barrier. Most of the students who are ready to go abroad do not adequate knowledge of the language spoken there. As a result, on arriving there, they will find it difficult to understand what the instructors are saying. Besides, for lack of knowledge of the customs and way of life of the local people, they may run into trouble in dealing with various situations. Therefore, misunderstandings often arise. Furthermore, the cost of living is much higher than that in our country, so most students have to find part-tine jobs in order to help support themselves. Faced with these difficulties, many students find themselves unable to pay full attention to their studies and some students may even fail in their courses and learn little.

Therefore, given an opportunity to attend a school abroad, one must consider both sides of the factors carefully before making up his mind. On the whole, it is a good thing to go and study abroad particularly when the subject is very weak or not available in our country. But on the other hand, one must not lose sight of the disadvantages.

7. Is the Expansion of Enrollment a Good Thing?

Many colleges and universities have expanded their enrollment since 1998. The reasons for the expansion are as follows. Firstly, they want to keep up with the need of the job market to produce more qualified people to take up the jobs. Secondly, the expansion has entitled many high school graduates to the right of receiving higher education. Last but not least, it can raise the intellectual standards of our nation.

However, studies show that the trend to expand has brought about many problems. For instance, the teaching facilities and accommodation capacities of many colleges and universities are limited and are unable to meet the demand of an ever-increasing number of the newly enrolled students. On the other hand, the average quality of the freshmen is declining. In the long run, hunting for a job will be a tough thing for the graduates and that will inevitably exert much pressure on the prospects of employment.

In spite of all this, I am still confident that the expansion of enrollment is of great benefit to our society and is a good thing. With the development of our national economy, the problem as mentioned above will be solved if proper measures are taken.

8. Getting to Know the World Outside the Campus

With the development of our society, the campus no longer is an "Ivory Tower". It is necessary for college students to go outside to get to know the world. They should acquire knowledge not only from books but also from the society. Thus they can adapt to society more quickly after they graduate from school. Science and technology are developing rapidly with each passing day. Most students can keep themselves informed by watching TV, listening to the radio, reading newspapers and using computers. It's also good to take a part-time job, such as tutoring, or working in a restaurant. Any of these methods will enable students to get in touch with society.

Summer vacation will soon be here. I've already enrolled to be a volunteer to help others. I think I can do well. Although I won't be paid, the most important thing is that I can learn a lot about society. 9. Harmfulness of Fake Commodities

Nowadays in the society, there are enormous fake commodities. When you go to the supermarket, you may buy some fake food commodities. When you go to the pharmacist's, you may buy some fake medicine.

The deep root of this phenomenon lies in someone's greed for money. In order to get a large amount of money in a short time, they try every means to produce fake commodities, without any regard for other people's benefit and health.

Fake commodities can do great harm to both consumers and society. For example, when a person bought fake medicine, it was useless in curing his disease and really a waste of money. Sometimes fake medicine can even cause death. Fake commodities are usually sold in a lower price. It causes unfair competition in the market economy and puts the whole society in disorder.

10. Don't Hesitate to Say "No"

Don't Hesitate to Say "No"

To help those who are in need is always regarded as a traditional Chinese moral. However people have to know well what the need is before the help is offered. When the need is just for some minority's benefit and against most people's interests, or when it is immoral or unlawful, people should not hesitate to say No. Otherwise they will put themselves into trouble.

Unfortunately, there are so many such examples around us that people end up their leadership in jail or bury their glory in shame simply because they don't say "No" while they should. Some people are reluctant to say "No" in front of all kinds of briberies as they want to swamp their power for money. They can't resist the temptations of accumulating wealth in a fast but illegal way. For their own good and their friend's favor, these people would sacrifice millions of RMB Yuan for an unproportional commission and therefore stake there future on scales of law. Other people don't say No because of misinterpreted friendship and lack of sense of law. They never hesitate to do whatever their friends ask them to do. They believe they are helping their friends even when they are actually violating the law or local regulations. Such people will also be punished according to the degree of their misbehavior.

Therefore, to help is not always doing good. People should learn to say a No when the help might hurt other people's interests.

11.Reading Selectively Or Extensively?

Reading Selectively Or Extensively?

How should we read? Should we read selectively or extensively? Everyone has his own view.

Some people think we should read selectively. They argue that with the development of m

odern science and technology, more and more books are being published every day. It is impossible for us to read all the books. What's more, there are many bad books that are poisonous to our mind, and we shouldn't read them. Since we can't read all the books, and we shouldn't read bad books, we must read selectively.

But others may not agree. They emphasize that today's society is not what is used to be. If you want to be successful, you must read widely and acquire knowledge in both natural sciencesand humanities, if a man knows much in one field but little in others, he may not be of great use to the society. Since we must have a wide range of knowledge, we must read extensively.

Who's right? There is a lot to be said for both sides of the argument. However, I think we should read extensively first and then dig into the subject we are interested in.

Dear Xiao Wang,

I am delighted to know that you will be able to visit me for a week during the National Day holiday. I am looking forward to your visit and to the opportunity to catch up. Welcome to my home in Nanjing!

As you know, Nanjing has many places of interest to see, to discover, and to enjoy. Among its historical sites are stone city wall, the Confucius Temple with its magnificent night view, and Dr. Sun Yetsen's Mausoleum. With all its universities, Nanjing is a cultural center, offering an abundance of artistic and musical performances. It's also a city of beautiful gardens and parks, such as the Xuanwu Lake Park. With all these features, we will have a fun-filled week, especially that in early-October, there are many sunny and mild days for outdoor activities. So, I would suggest visiting these places first, and deciding on the others as our week develops.

Finally, since at this time of the year the weather gets a little chilly in the evening, I would suggest that you bring some warm clothing with you. Also, as there will be crowds of people at the stations and on the trains, you need to be very careful with your belongin

Best wishes for a pleasant journey!

Nowadays, in an ever tighter job market, great importance has been attached to an interview by both the employer and the applicant. The interview, so to speak, has become indispensable for getting a satisfactory job. On the one hand, the interviewer can take advantage of the occasion to learn about the candidates, such as their work experiences, education and their personalities, so as to pick out the right candidates for the company. One the other hand, the interviewee can make use of the opportunity to get to know the job he is going to take up, the credibility of the firm to which he has applied, and the working conditions as well.

Essential as it is, the job interview is far from fearful. Well begun, half done. Excellent performance in it will enable the would-be employee secure the job. But how can one succeed in it?

First of all, the interviewee has to pay attention to his or her appearance. Though we can never judge a person by his appearance, the first impression is always where we start. Secondly, good manners are equally important. The interviewee has to be neither too proud nor too timid. Just be courteous. Thirdly, the interviewee must demonstrate his aptitude and skills for the job and knowledge about the job-related areas; he must express himself clearly and confidently. Last but not the least, the interviewee ought to be honest about his or her personal as well as academic background, for honesty is the best policy.

To sum up, the job interview is indeed important. There is no need to be nervous, however, if the interviewee has made full preparations for it and given a fairly confident and honest performance, his or her success can be ensured.

14. A letter to the University President about the Canteen Service on Campus

January 12. 2002

Dear Mr. President,

My name is Li Ming. I am a sophomore of the law school. As the school year is drawing to a close, I venture to write a letter to you about the canteen service on campus which has given rise to much complaint among students.

The focus of the complaint is the poor quality of the food. The rice is just like bullets and the buns are like hand grenades. They are too hard for us to chew. And the vegetables are so overcooked as to lose their nutrients. The fish and meat are not given full measure. The only thing we are satisfied with is the free soup. However, the price of the food is surprisingly high. If we have 3 meals all in the canteen, at least twelve yuan is gone to keep our body and soul together. As a result, many of us go out to have meals.

Honestly speaking, the dining environment has been improved, with the wall painted and some Chinese calligraphy works posted up. But there are only two canteens on the campus. As the number of students is ever increasing, there is not enough space and seats to allow us to have our meals there. The attitude of the service staff to the students is not hospitable at all.

All in all, there is still much room for improvement as far as the canteen service is concerned. I hope we will not suffer for another two years.

Best regards.

Sincerely Yours

Li Ming

15. Student Use of Computers

For this part, you are allowed thirty minutes to write a composition on the topic: Student Use of Computers. You should write at least 120 words, and base your composition on the chart and the outline given below:

Study the table

1.上图所示为19xx年、19xx年、20xx年某大学生使用计算机的情况,请描述其变化;

2.请说明发生这些变化的原因(可从计算机的用途、价格或社会发展等方面加以说明);

Student Use of Computer

Since 1990, there has been tremendous growth in the use of computers by students. While in 1990, the average number of hours a student spent on the computer was about one hour per week, this number grew to nearly four hours per week by 1995, and to approximately 20 hours per week by the year 2000.

This significant growth in the use of computers by students in the 1990's can be attributed to several factors, including widespread usage, lower prices, and technological and social developments. Nowadays, computers are widely used by students for word processing, book keeping, multimedia presentations, and access to the Internet for both research and communications. Additionally, since 1990, due to competition and technological advances, computer hardware and software prices, as well as Internet usage charges have dropped significantly. Finally, technological developments and changes in social habits in the 1990's have played a major role in this tremendous growth in the use of computers. Today's society relies heavily on computers for immediate access to the news and for entertainment, including, listening to music, watching movies and sport events, and playing computer games.

While computers are of great assistance to the students, and therefore, are indispensable tools, they also pose some challenges. The biggest challenge that many students face is discipline in the use of this powerful device. That is, students need to have the discipline of not allowing themselves to be lured by the entertaining aspects of this wonderful tool-aspects that can result in addiction to computer games or viewing of undesirable material on the Internet. That is to say, students need to use this powerful tool with great wisdom!

16. It Pays to Be Honest

It Pays to Be Honest

Nowadays people are troubled with mass of dishonest behaviors in society. Teachers get annoyed when they catch students cheating on exams; consumers get hurt when they unfortunately buy some fake products; children are misled when they see their parents tell lies so as to evade the responsibility they should take.

Why do people cheat? The main reason probably lies in immediate interest they may obtain by cheating. For example, a company, which manufactures fake products, may seem to win for a moment because it can minimize its manufacture cost by doing so. This kind of businesses, however, will be driven out of the market in the long run. For the consumers after getting to know the poor quality of the products will not buy them anymore.

The same is true of individuals. Dishonest people dare not take on the responsibility of life. They cheat in class, in office, at home and so on. But the truth can hardly be masked.

The moment the truth comes out they will lose their credibility, which is easier to destroy than to rebuild. Consequently, these dishonest will suffer a long time because of their cheating behaviors. In conclusion, no one can afford to be dishonest in a civilized society.

Honesty is the pillar of a society. People will benefit from being honest in the long run. That's why we say it pays to be honest. 17.

An Eye-witness Account of a Traffic Accident

Yesterday afternoon, I happened to witness a terrible traffic accident on my way home from school. It was 5:30 p.m., I was riding my favorite Giant back home. When I got to the last crossing on the Golden Lion Street, the red light was on. So I applied the brakes, along with a long queue of vehicles waiting to pass.

Just at that moment, a heavy-load truck with earth roared forward at my side and bumped against a private Accord of Honda travelling eastbound. As a result, the windshield of the lorry was broken into pieces and its driver got fatally wounded on the head on the steering wheel. The driver of the Accord and his girlfriend, the only passenger in the car, only got minor injuries, but his car lost its rear axel and two wheels and was totally dead.

As for the cause of the accident, I think the driver of the lorry should be held responsible: the light was red then; he should have stopped and waited. It was he who had broken the traffic regulations. In addition, the bad weather was part of the cause It was drizzling then, and the road was quite slippery. Finally, drunk driving was probably an important factor. As the police discovered on the spot, there was a heavy alcoholic smell on the dead body of the lorry driver.

A Letter in Reply to a Friend

Dear friend:

I am very glad to learn that you'd like to apply for admission to my university.

Since you are good at argumentation and debate, I strongly recommend that you major in law. So far as I know, you are an upright dynamo always ready to defend for the wronged people and let justice prevail. On the other hand, you seem to be a keen observer and analyst. You really have the makings of a good lawyer.

Now I should (like to) mention some important points you should pay attention to. First of all, you should exert yourself to get high scores in the coming college Entrance Examination, for laws is a very popular major in our university. There is fierce competition in the enrollment of newcomers. In addition to the routine preparation for the exam, it is necessary to have a sound body for your sound mind to dwell in. Go over all your lessons and read some books about law, and you will be more confident of your getting enrolled.

Just try your best, and you will give full expression to your talent in the future.

Good luck!

Yours

It is Teacher's Day today. On this special occasion I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to all teachers, "Happy Teacher's Day!"

Of all teachers who have taught me since my early childhood, the most unforgettable one is my first English teacher in college, Ms. Zhang. It is she who has aroused my keen interest in the learning of English and helped me realize the importance of self-reliance. Born into a poor farmer's family in a mountainous area and educated in relatively primitive surroundings, I found myself lagging far behind in the first class in college, which happened to be Ms. Zhang's English class. I was really discouraged and frustrated, so I decided to drop out. Ms. Zhang was so keenly insightful that she had noticed my embarrassment in class. After class, she called me into the Teacher's Room and discussed the situation with me, earnestly and kindly, citing the example of Robinson Crusoe to motivate me to go ahead in spite of all kinds of difficulties. "Be a man and rely on yourself," she nudged me. The next time we met, she brought me a simplified version of Robinson Crusoe and recommended that I finish reading it in a week and write a book report. Under her consistent and patient guidance, not only has my English been greatly improved, but my confidence and courage enhanced considerably.

"Rely on yourself and be a man," Ms. Zhang's inspiring words have been echoing in my mind. I will work harder and try my utmost to lay a solid foundation for my future career. Only by so doing can I repay Ms. Zhang's kindness and live up to her expectations of me, that is, to become a useful person and contribute to society.

University Courses

University Courses

Many young people go to universities without a clear idea of what they are going to do. If one considers the various courses offered, it is not hard to see how difficult it is for a student to select the course most suited to him. If a student goes to a university to acquire a broader perspective of life, he will undoubtedly benefit. Schools often have too restrictive an atmosphere. Most students would, I believe, profit by the exploration of different academic studies, especially the “all rounder” with no particular interest.① They should have a longer time to decide in what subject they want to take their degrees, so that in later life, they do not look back and regret.

There is, of course, another side to the question of how to make the best use of one?s time at university.② Some students, who are good at a particular branch of learning, may spend three or four years becoming a specialist, appearing with a first class Honors Degree but very little knowledge of what the rest of the world is all about. Therefore there will have to be much more detailed information in all fields. On the one hand, a band of specialists ignorant of anything outside their own subject, and on the other hand, an ever increasing number of graduates qualified in subjects for which there is little or no demand in the working world.③

Examinations Exert a Negative Influence on Education

Though all the pious claim that examinations test what you know, it is common knowledge that they more often do the exact opposite.① They may be a good means of testing memory, or the knack of working rapidly under extreme pressure, but they can tell you nothing about a person?s true ability and aptitude.

As anxiety makers, examinations are second to none. That is because so much depends on them. They are the mark of success or failure in our society. Your whole future may be decided in one fateful day. The moment a child begins school, he enters a world of sharp success and failure are clearly defined and measured. Can we wonder at the increasing number of drop-outs, young people who are written off as utter failures before they have even begun a career? Can we be surprised at the suicide rate among students?

A good education should, among other things, train you to think for yourself. The examination system does anything but that. What has to be learnt is rigidly laid down by a syllabus, so the student is encouraged to memories.② Examinations do not motivate a student to read widely, but to restrict his reading; they do not enable him to seek more and more knowledge, but induce cramming.③ The most successful candidates are not always the best educated; they are the best trained in the technique of working under pressure.
