As a student, you must be excited to know something about American school students. In fact, just like in China, in the United States, high school is usually divided into two periods, the first two or three years are called “junior high school” and the other is “senior high school”. In China, children enjoy free education of nine years, but in the United States, the students enjoy free education until they are 18 years old. As a result of the free education system (制

度), American children have little difficulty in going to senior high school.

American high school students can take part in a lot of activities outside of the classroom. The activities are organized by the school, such as joining a music group or a sports team. Certainly, just like us students in China, American students have to work hard in order to get good marks if they want to go to a good university. They take classes in all kinds of subjects all through the high school period. And those who come out with low marks at the end of a school year and who should repeat a grade are often allowed to go on to the next grade. In American high schools, there is fighting or hurting or other kinds of bad behaviors. So children who want to go to university are often sent to suburban (郊区

It takes many years for you to grow up. There are two periods in your life when you grow rapidly. The first period begins right after you are born and lasts until you are about six months old. The second period starts when you reach the age of 13. First, girls grow faster than boys, then boys catch up and grow faster and stronger. Your head stops growing earlier than the rest of you. By the time you are ten, your head is nearly full size. The bones of your arms and legs are short when you are a baby. When you reach the age of nine, your bones starts to grow rapidly, and will keep growing until you reach your full height (高度).

Besides growing taller, your body changes in other ways. When a boy is about 13 years old, his voice begins to get deeper and he may begin to grow a beard (胡子). At about the age of 13, a girl’s body begins to function (运行) like a woman’s. Some important changes are taking place, changes that makes it possible for boys and girls, when they are older, to become fathers and mothers. 1. curses(咒

骂). I love her but I am ashamed of her. I do not want to bring my friends home because she does not act like any of the other mothers. She says I am a loser because I sit at home and study. I wish I could live in another family that was normal, but it will be 5 years before I am 18. What am I supposed to do until then? Prisoner of a Crazy House

Dear 7th Grader, I am glad that you love your mother because the rest of your feelings about her may change as you get older and mature. While it is true that your mother’s smoking, partying and cursing bring you shame, the fact that you want to stay separate from her doings is notable and very smart. It shows that you are a winner, not a loser. I am guessing, therefore, that you do not bring shame to yourself, and that is a good thing. So, keep it that way and keep away from your mother’s habits. At the same time, try to get the best grades and join clubs and school activities. Offer social service on weekends and visit your friends at their homes.

Fortunately, you are not alone. Many teens live in homes with immature, misguided, selfish parents. But they develop good friendships with nice kids, do well in school, and often find a teacher or guidance advisor who makes all the difference! Do it, Miss Winning 13 years old, and keep looking forward to your own future. Maybe by then your mother may even see the light and realize how good you really are. Michelle 1. Young people in most countries like to dance. Different peoples have different kinds of dances.

Pretend (假装)that you are in Africa. You are visiting the Kikuyu tribe.

Hear the drums beat! Listen to the flutes! Almost 2,000 Kikuyus are meeting for the most important dance of the year. First, the Kikuyus choose a large, flat place for their dance. For hundreds of years, they have danced on an autumn night when the moon is full. The moon and the flame from small fires light the dancers. Older people watch from the side while young men and women gather at the dancing place. The girls wear leather skirts and tops. The men wear fancy headdresses and carry spears. The dancers' skin and clothes are colored by light red chalk. The chalk and the firelight make the dancers look like statues. The dancers act out stories of good and bad deeds. Go to church, then have a big lunch, then go out to play while mum does the housework. That was a typical (典型

的) British Sunday in the 1960s. But things now could not be more different. Some B

ritish sociologists recently studied the typical British Sunday. They found that people get up later and do less housework than they did 40 years ago. They are far more likely to be out shopping or enjoying themselves than cooking Sunday lunch. Sunday mornings were busy 40 years ago. Most women caught up on their weekly housework and cooked a nice lunch. They seldom allowed themselves any “leisure” until afternoon, after the dishes were cleaned. Then there would be another rush to the table between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm for tea.

But now, Britons can have brunch (早午

餐) at the restaurant. Fewer people bother to cook themselves.

“You only have two free days a week. You don’t want to have to waste one because there is nothing to do but watch boring TV,” said Elizabeth Biggs, 25, a producer in London.

“On Saturday you are recovering from the week,” Biggs added. “Sundays are the last chance for the weekend — you want to get as much as you can out of the day before you have to go back to work.” In the past, British women usually did their shopping during the week, while the husband was at work. “Now men seem to do that as much as women,” said Jonathan Gershuny, a professor who took part in the study. Men also do more housework now on Sundays. Back in the 1960s, men were far more likely to spend Sundays out of the house — at the pub or playing football — before lunch. 1. Many Britons have brunch at the restaurant because _______. A. They have no time to cook at home. B. They get up too late. C. They won’t bother to cook themselves. D. They will go to church. 2. Which of the following is NOT true? A. Britons used to go to church on Sundays. B. Britons usually had a big lunch at home. C. British women usually did their shopping during the week in the past. D. British men did little housework at home in the past. 3. The text mainly tells us ________. A. what Britons did on Sundays B. why Britons go shopping on Sundays C. how Britons spend their holidays D. the changes of the ways the Britons spend their Sundays 4. What can we infer from the passage? A. Men do more housework on Sundays. B. Sundays in Britain might be very boring in the past. C. No people go to church on Sundays now. D. Britons all go out on Sundays. 八

Every day we go to school and listen to the teacher, and the teacher will ask us some questions. Sometimes, the classmates will ask for your opinions of the work of the class. When you are telling others in the class what you have found out about these topics, remember that they must be able to hear what you are saying. You are not taking part in a family conversation or having a chat with friends—you are in a slightly unnatural situation where a large group of people will remain silent, waiting to hear what you have to say. You must speak so that they can hear you—loudly enough and clearly enough but without trying to shout or appearing to force yourself. Remember, too, that it is the same if you are called to an interview whether it is with a professor of your school or a government official who might meet you. The person you are seeing will try to put you at your ease (not worried) but the situatio

n is somewhat different from that of an ordinary conversation. You must take special care that you can be heard. 1. When you speak to the class, you should speak ________. A. as slowly as possible B. in a low voice C. loudly D. forcefully 2. Usually, when you speak to the class, the class is ________. A. noisy B. quiet C. having a rest D. serious 3. The situation in the class is _________that in your house. A. not very different from B. sometimes the same as C. sometimes not the same as D. not the same as 4. If you are having a conversation with an official, the most important thing for you is____. A. to show your ability B. to be very gentle C. to make sure that you can be heard D. to put the official at ease 5. The main idea of this passage is _______. A. that we should talk in different ways in different situations B. that we must speak loudly C. that we must keep silent at any time D. that we must talk with the class

Although English is not as old as Chinese, it is spoken by many people around the world every day. English speakers are always creating new words and we are often able to know where most words come from. Sometimes, however, no one may really know where a word comes from. Did you ever think about why hamburgers are called hamburgers, especially when they are not made with ham? About a hundred years ago, some men went to America from Europe. They came from a big city in Germany called Hamburg. They didn’t speak good English, but they ate good food. When some Americans saw them eating round piece of beef, they asked the Germans what it was. The

Germans didn’t understand the question and answered, “We come from Hamburg.” One of these Americans owned a restaurant, and had an idea. He cooked some round piece of bread and started selling them. Such bread came to be called “hamburgers”. Today, “hamburgers” are sold in many countries around the world. Whether this story is true or not, it certainly is interesting. Knowing why any word has a certain meaning is interesting, too. This reason, for most English words, can be found in any large English dictionary. 1 Hamburg is ____________ A. a kind of food B. a round piece of beef C. the name of a village D. a city in Germany 2. According to the passage, ___________. A. few Americans like hamburgers B. hamburgers are made with beef C. hamburgers are made with ham D. hamburgers were first sold about a century ago 3 According to the writer, which of the following can often be found in any large English dictionary? A. Where all the new words come from. B. Where those Germans came from. C. The reason why a word has a certain meaning. D. The reason why English is spoken around the world. 4 From the story, we can know that the word “hamburger” comes from ___________. A. China because it has a long history B. English because Germans don’t speak good English C. The round piece of beef which those people from Hamburg were eating D. English speakers because they always create new words 十

How to protect child web fans from unsuitable materials (不合适材料) on-

line while encouraging them to use the Internet has long been discussed in the US. For some time, the Internet seems like a forest, filled with dangers for children. But forests have wonders as well as dangers, and with good guides, some education and a few precautions(预防措施) ,the wilds of the Internet can be safely navigated(航行). "Children have to be on-

line. If we tell our children they can' t have chances to the Internet, we' re cutting them off from their future," said an expert. Most children have started to use search engines. Many of them are great for finding lots of interesting Internet sites and they can also go to places where you might not want them to go. There are such engines made just for children. A certain software (软

件) contains only sites that have been selected as safe. The most popular way to limit chances would be to use what is known as a "content screener(过滤

器)”. But this can't be wholly safe, and the best thing parents can do is to talk to their kids and let them know what is OK or not OK to see or do on the Internet. Another way is that mum or dad is nearby when the child is surfing the Internet. A few other tips: 1) Don' t put the PC in a child's room, but keep it in a place where mum or dad can keep an eye on things. That also makes the Internet more of a family activity. 2) Ask your child not to give on-line strangers personal information, especially like address and phone number. 3) Tell your children never to talk to anyone they meet on-line over the phone, send them anything, accept anything from them or agree to meet with them unless you go along. 1. What is the main subject about the passage?

A. Fighting against children on-

line. B. Internet in America. C. American children going on-line. D. Children's web sites. 2. According to the passage, we can infer that A. the writer doesn't encourage children to surf the Internet B. the Internet has a lot of harmful sites C. the Internet is a forest full of dangers D. a child who is on-line is in danger 3. What does the passage tell us most? A. Education B. Good guides C. Precautions D. Software 十三

Many people will remember the flight of the space shuttle(航天飞

机) Challenger, in June, 1993. The achievement of Sally Ride, America’

s first woman astronaut to fly into space, made this flight especially memorable. Students from two high schools in Camden, New Jersey, however, are likely to remember Norma rather than Sally whenever they think about the flight. Norma didn’t travel along. She brought about 100 companions(伙

伴) along with her. Norma was an ant, a queen ant who, with her subjects, made up the first ant colony(群体)

to travel into space. The ants were part of a science experiment designed by the students to test the effects of weightlessness on insects. The equipment designed by the students for their colony functioned perfectly through-out the long space trip. The young scientists and their teachers were very sad to find that their insect astronauts had all died at some point before the container was returned to the school and opened. The problem did not occur in space, but on the ground after Challenger had landed. The container remained in the desert for nearly a week before the ant colony was removed. The hot dry desert air dried out the colony’s container(容器)

and the ants died from lack of moisture(水分).

The project was termed a success because it did provide useful information. Students will continue their efforts to find out exactly what went wrong. They will try to prevent the same difficulties from recurring on future missions. They don’t want to be discouraged either by the death of the ants or by the $10,000 shuttle fare they will have to pay to send the next colony of ants into space. 1. The story is mainly about ___________. will walk in the streets in an effort to find her father, who died 30 years ago. Not all cases of Alzheimer’s disease look like this, but Alzheimer’s is a serious disease that is said to be the fourth or fifth leading cause of death for people over age 75. It is said that about three percent of the U.S. population over age 65 have Alzheimer’s. In the early stages; people may exhibit short-term memory loss. Some may experience changes in personality, easy to be angry. As the disease progresses, patients might lose the ability to move and may be unable to speak or move at all. This progressive disease generally lasts 8 to 10 years before death occurs.

While no one is certain what causes these changes in the brain’

s nerve fibers (神经纤维), their effect is certain. Alzheimer’

s destroys not only the patients, but also spouses(配偶), friends and families.

What should you do if you notice progressive memory loss in yourself or a loved one? Have the person examined by a doctor who is a specialist in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. Though many reasons other than Alzheimer’s disease may cause memory loss, its early diagnosis(诊断)

and treatment may delay some of the most serious effects. What feeling will you likely experience if a loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s disease? A person will often go through the various stages of sadness, shock, anger, and so on. If the spouse develops the disease, you may experience hurt and disappointment when he or she doesn’t remember you are married. Life for the Alzheimer’s patients and their loved ones will never be the same as the disease progresses, bringing a deep sorrow, loss and even anger towards God. No matter what feelings are present, facing them honestly will serve one better than burying them. 1 What can be inferred from the passage about the gray-haired day? A. She has been living with her father. B. She was sad about the death of her father. C. She can’t search for her father without being watched. D. She suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. 2. When people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, ________. A. their families and friends will suffer from the same disease B. their families and friends will experience mental sufferings C. they will certainly die in 8 to 10 years D. they will forget everybody but their spouses 3. Memory loss occurs ________. A. from Alzheimer’s disease and nothing else B. from sadness, shock, anger, and so on C. for a number of reasons D. with changes in personality 4. From the passage we know that ______. A. early treatment may stop Alzheimer’s disease occurring B. it is still unknown what causes the changes in the brain’s nerve fibers C. nerve fibers in the brain will cause Alzheimer’s disease

He was the baby with no name. Found and taken from the north Atlantic 6 days after the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, his tiny body so moved the salvage (救援) workers that they called him “our baby.” In their home port of Halifax, Nova Scotia, people collected money for a headstone in front of the baby's grave (墓), carved with the words: “To the memory of an unknown child.” He has rested there ever since. But history has a way of uncovering its secrets. On Nov. 5, this year, three members of a family from Finland arrived at Halifax and laid fresh flowers at the grave. “This is our baby,” says Magda Schleifer, 68, a banker. She grew up hearing stories about a great-aunt named Maria Panula,42, who had sailed on the Titanic for America to be reunited with her husband. According to the information Mrs. Schleifer had gathered, Panula gave up her

It was 3:21 A. M. when nine-year-

old Glenn Kreamer awoke to the smell of burning. Except for the cracking(爆裂声)of flames somewhere below, there was not a sound in the two-

storey house at Baldwin Long Island. With his father away on night duty at a local factory, Glenn was worried about the safety of his mother, his sister Karen,14 and his 12-year-old brother Todd. He ran downstairs through the smoke-filled house to push and pull at Karen and Todd until they sat up. Then he helped each one through the house to the safety of the garden. There, his sister and brother, taking short and quick breaths and coughing, fell down onto the lawn.

The nine-year-old boy raced back into the house and upstairs to his mother’s room .He found it impossible to wake her up. Mrs. Kreamer, a victim of the smoke, was unconscious(昏厥

的),and there was nobody to help Glenn carry her to the garden .But the boy remained calm and ,as a fireman said later, “acted with all the self-control of a trained adult.” On the bedroom telephone, luckily still working, Glenn called his father and, leaving Mr. Kreamer to telephone the fire brigade and ambulance(救护

车) service, got on with the task of saving his mother.

First he filled a bucket with water from the bathroom and threw water over his mother and her bed. Then, with a wet cloth around his head he went back to the garden. He could hear the fire engine coming up, but how would the firemen find his mother in the smoke-filled house where flames had almost swallowed up the ground floor? Grasping firmly a ball of string(线) from the garage, Glenn raced back into the house and dashed up

stairs to his mother’

s room. Tying one end of the string to her hand he ran back, laying out the string as he went, through the hall and back out into the garden. Minutes later he was telling fire chief John Coughlan: “The string will lead you to mother.” Mrs. Kreamer was carried to safety as the flames were breaking through her bedroom floor. 1 Why did Glenn run downstairs first? When the population of the port town began to suffer from poisoning(中

毒), the police came to find the cause of the poison. They thought someone was poisoning the people on purpose but no one knew how it was possible. Soon people took the position that the pork was poisoned. It was a popular food everyone ate and it could have possibly made everyone sick. Anyone who had possession of pork would throw it out. Even the poorest of the poor wouldn’t eat pork. Signs were posted on poles and letters were sent to everyone to warn people of the pork. Shortly afterwards, even policemen in high positions were also getting sick.

Soon it became political and popular. Politicians(政

客) rushed to the town to talk about politics and promised how they would find the solution if they were elected. Everyone was so sick that they didn’

t care about politics. Everyone was in a position where he or she didn’t know what to do anymore. They went to the post office to mail posts out asking for help. The poor town didn’t know how to deal with the situation. One day, a well-known scientist from New York came to the town with a huge box containing many instruments and his possessions. He went to pools and the port and made measurements. He was quiet and polite. Then one day he made a speech at a newspaper meeting-room to announce his findings.

“I’m sorry to say your water supply is so heavily polluted; it is poisoned. I know who has been poisoning you all for such a long time. It is you who have been poisoning yourselves with pollution. A great deal of rubbish has been thrown into the water day after day. No one here has taken good care of the environment. A young man applied for a job as a farmhand. When the farmer asked for his qualifications(资历), he said, “I can sleep when the wind blows.”

This puzzled the farmer. But he liked the young man, and hired him. A few days later, the farmer and his wife were awakened in the night by a violent storm. They quickly began to check things to see if all was safe from damage. They found that the doors of the farmhouse had been safely fastened, and a lot of wood had been set next to the fireplace. The young man slept soundly.

The farmer and his wife then looked at their property (财

产) carefully. They found that the farm tools had been placed in the storage room, safe from the bad weather. The tractor had been moved into the garage. The barn was properly locked. Even the animals were calm. All was well. The farmer then understood the meaning of the young man’s words, “ I can sleep when the wind blows.” The farmhand did his work loyally. The repairman told me, “No charge. Professor Pan! We’re friends.” “I’d rather pay.” I replied. “If it’s free I can’t afford it!” Chinese often refuse payment for professional services, insisting, “We’re friends now!” But then they show up later to ask me to tutor them in English, or get them in

to an American university, and I wish I’d have just paid the 30 yuan I owed them in the first place! According to the Americans “There’s no free lunch,” meaning, there’s a price for everything, and I’m always looking around to figure out what this means. Many of our neighbors have given us fruit or flowers or costly teas, never asking anything in return. For years, a bicycle repairman has repeatedly refused to let me pay him. “Wait until you have something major to fix!” he insists.

I mentioned to a peasant friend that I wished I had a stone mill(磨)to grind flour for bread. A month later he showed up with a beautiful mill that he’

d had his uncle in the countryside carve from a solid block of granite. Chinese generosity is a real education for Americans like me, who would rather avoid social entanglements(纠缠)and just hand over the money. But cash can’t compensate (补偿) for the greatest gift—friendship.

When an American saw some of my friends sitting on bamboo stools under the trees, drinking tea, he said, “They must have nothing better to do.” “Actually,” I said, “they are professors, with plenty to do. But probably you’re right in saying that, at this moment, they have nothing better to do. And neither do I!” And I joined the group. We chatted about tea and Chinese cooking and how much my boys have grown since we arrived. One man said, “They were pocket-sized when you came here. Now they’re taller than you. How time flies!” How life flies. And Chinese are smart enough to share what they know. They cannot keep. They freely give off their time, never too busy to help a friend. And they are teaching me, slowly, to both give and receive. So the next time someone says, “No charge. We’re friends!” I will thank them heartily. But if they show up later asking me to tutor them in English. I’ll make sure they tutor my son in Chinese as well, because there’s still no free lunch.

1. Why did the author insist paying the repairman when he was offered free repairs? A. Because he was an upright man. B. Because he didn’t know the repairman. C. Because he thought it natural to pay for other’s service. D. Because he didn’t want to help others in return. 2. The underlined word “figure out” in Paragraph 3 probably means____. A. calculate B. think of C. know about D. make it clear 3. Generally, the author thinks that____. A. Chinese are generous and always ready to help their friends B. Chinese are good at exchange of equal values C. Chinese are free enough to drink tea and chat with their friends D. Chinese are helpful but don’t treasure time 4. The best title of the article should be____. A. Still no free lunch B. A good lesson from the Chinese C. True help or not D. Learn to both give and receive 5. Which of the following is true? A. Chinese seldom refuse payment for professional services. B. When a peasant knew the author needed a mill, he made one for the author himself. C. The author thinks that Chinese are wise enough to enjoy their life. D. Finally, the author changed his mind and decided to do as the Chinese do.
