第二篇:Essay 写作课
Child's Talk
by Robert Lynd
Born in Belfast and educated at Queen's University of Belfast, Robert Lynd spent most of his adult life in London, writing for a variety of newspapers and magazines, including the New Statesman. Leonard Woolf characterized Lynd as "one of those impeccable journalists who every week for 30 or 40 years turn out an impeccable essay . . . like an impeccable sausage, about anything or everything or nothing." "Child's Talk," originally published in 1922, is one of those impeccable essays.
We can see, at the very beginning of the essay, the writer describes such a scene to readers “I was sitting in a railway carriage opposite a child who was holding a large elephant on wheels under its right arm. I cannot remember what the child looked like, but I remember that the elephant had a skin of grey cloth and a red saddle, and that the child had squeezed its handkerchief under the saddle, and, pointing to this, said, as if telling me a secret: "My pocket."”. Just like he is going to tell us a story, he chooses not to point out his argument at first, in that case, the essay may seems so boring. In this case, readers may wonder what the writer wants to tell us , what will happen next. The narrative beginning makes the essay more easily to be accepted, at the same time, it can attract readers’ attention, attract them to read the rest of the essay and pay more attention to your article.
Then comes to the second paragraph, in this paragraph, the author expresses his opinion about the scene we mention above, leads to the main topic he will discuss in the whole essay very naturally. There is a kind of relation between the first and the second paragraph, the two paragraphs are closely linked and transferred naturally. Main topic becomes clear after the writer expresses his views about the scene , what he is going to discuss in the essay is that adults and children start a conversation in a different way, children start a conversation in a more creative and more sincere way. "What wonderful weather we've been having!" One's ordinary conversation may start with this kind of words, it’s an adult’s way to try to talk with somebody else, they just start with a mediocre and boring subject , the author set this example to all the readers. I f the author just tells us the truth he thinks, if he simply says “ well, I think adult start a conversation so boring, but children have a more interesting way to start a talk” . In this case, this article is so common, we don’t know whether we should continue to read. With an example, not only he puts forward his own opinion, but also he makes the article easy to understand. An
adult say this way may seems to show his outrage, then what will children to show their outrage? The child would merely stare. Contrast methods are the most frequently used writing technique in this article. The comparison between adult and children is the first contrast.
As for the third paragraph, “Thirty or forty years hence it will have adapted itself to grown-up conversation,…………At present it believes that conversation should be as interesting as the things one thinks about, and that it should either be amusing or informing and serious.” The author assume that after thirty or forty years , the little boy may have adapted itself to a grown-up style of conversation, will have learned to return babble for babble like an ordinary inmate of a railway carriage. This kind of talk is miserable, it lost the original ideological content, and become plain even boring. To this child, at this period of his life, conversation should be an interesting thing. Just as an classic saying goes Art for art’s sake, we can also say talk for talk’s sake. We talk to express our opinions, we talk to change ideas, there must be some specific meaning in your talk. If you have nothing to talk about, just try to break the quiet situation, this kind of talk cannot be recognized as a real conversation.
Just as I said before, contrast methods are the most frequently used writing technique in this article, we can see the contrast between adult and children,. This is a contrast between two different kinds of people. Now, in the third paragraph, we can see another contrast, in different period of a person’s life, the same person, will act differently. In his childhood, talking is an interesting thing, then, in his adulthood, talking is just like an ordinary inmate of a railway carriage.
Parable metaphor is another kind of writing technique that the author used. When he refers to the boring way an adult talks, he describes it as an ordinary inmate of a railway carriage. This kind of metaphor can be seen in the following paragraphs.
So how actually can an adult talk ? We may ask, the author will give us specific examples in the next paragraphs. On the other hand, it does not regard as serious many of the things that you and I regard as serious. There is no use looking over your paper at it and saying: “Lloyd George seems to be getting into hot water with the French about the Poles." It has never heard of Mr. Lloyd George, or of the French, or of the Poles.” This is a valid example shows we may think this kind of “hot water” the main point, while some other people may not think so. It caused a doubt, the only words in the sentence that will convey anything to its mind are "hot water," and these will call up a picture of somebody putting his toe into a steaming bath and having to withdraw it hurriedly. Is this the real meaning the talker wants you to think about? Of
course not, you almost miss the main point in the conversation. After putting forward the doubt, then the author begin his next deeper discussion. One ought not to say "the animal," perhaps; it is really called "the demon," or rather "the demond." Anyhow, it is worse than Mr. Lloyd George, worse than the French, worse than the Poles. Mr. Lloyd George does not at least hide down the waste-pipe and make gurgling noises. That is why the problem of making the bath safe for children seems, at the age of six, a matter of far more urgent public importance than the problem of making the world safe for
democracy. From the above interpretation we can see the author expresses that adults and children focus on different kinds of things.
In the last part of this essay, the author puts forward an interesting
assumption-----if an elderly gentleman went about carrying a grey elephant with a red saddle under his arm, and wearing his handkerchief under the elephant's saddle instead of in an ordinary pocket, we should regard this as even more convincing proof of his insanity than his remarks on the coal strike. If he pointed to the saddle and said with a beaming eye, as if communicating a secret, "My pocket," one would undoubtedly change one's compartment at the next station. The same situation, the different people, an elder one at his sixties, a younger one at his six, the result will be quite different. Dramatic hypothesis sets out the main point , make it more clear to us.
In the whole essay, the author discusses the difference between child’s talk and adult’s talk, at the end of the essay, we can see a perfectly engrossing conversation happened between the author and the six year old little boy. This conversation started in a comfortable way, had some real meanings, both the author and the child enjoyed this talk. From this point it is not difficult to see that the author has a preference for the latter kind of talking.
Throughout the whole article, the author explains his views in different levels, uses the words correctly, discusses the main topic with a humorous language, attracts the reader to follow him, I guess maybe the author tells us this story in order to reflect something in the society. From my point of view, talking with children can always be interesting and relaxing, we don’t need to care about too much things, we just enjoy the fun of the conversation. With the growth of age, we turns boring. I love this kind of writing, which is described in an easy and humorous language, the writer puts forward his views in a natural way and you will unconsciously follow the plot.
