My reflection on positive psychology In the recent few weeks, I watched some videos of Positive Psychology of Harvard University given by Professor Tal, together with my roommates on the recommend of my Major English teacher.

It is said Positive Psychology is the most popular opening course of Harvard University. Many people take this class and benefited a lot from it. But, to be honest, at the beginning I watched the video reluctantly because I think that it is a waste of time somehow.

However, my mind changed after I watched three parts of the course. Both of the course and the teacher are so interesting and attracting, which make me have a strong willing to learn it. I think I have learned something meaningful from it and I want to share some of my reflection with you.

First of all, to be happy or not happy is up to us: to our mind, our resilience and our motive. Just as Tal said, we see what we looking for and we miss much of what we are not looking for even though it is there. Our experience of the world is heavily influenced by where we place our attention. Yes, if we place our attention on positive and happy things rather than negative﹑unhappy ones, we will be much happier. 1

I remembered that in the first month of my Senior High School life, I was not happy or I was in great pain to be exact, because I failed my High School entrance exam. You now, I was the first place of our county in the mock exam. But this time, I did badly, very badly. So you can imagine how painful I was. There was always a thought in my mind: I was so incompetent that I failed to live up to the expectations of my parents, my teachers, and my friends. During this period, I was smiling in the daytime but crying in the night.

But later I realized that the more I placed my attention on this thought, the more painful I would. So I tried my best to focus on current study and new school life. I told to myself:One should rather fight for the future than regret for the past. What I should do now is study really hard for the college entrance exam, which is more important. So from then on, I say goodbye to the painful life and devoted myself to study. And I was delighted that I got good grades in the college entrance exam.

This special experience made me totally agree with Tal' opinion. To be happy or unhappy, it all depends on you.

Secondly, if you want to succeed you must be confident and independent and also hardworking. Because no one is coming to make your life better for you. No one is coming. You 2

are responsible for you self-confidence, your self-esteem, and your happiness.

It is true that we should be independent as no one can help us forever. Most of our life, we should solve problems and meet challenges on our way to success. Confidence is of great importance, too. As the saying goes,〃Confidence is the first step on the road to success〃. If you want to succeed, you must believe that you can be successful. Last but not least, you should be hardworking , because 〃no pains, no gains. 〃. In my opinion, if you can be confident, independent and hardworking you are likely to be successful.

Some of Tai's opinion and methods to make ourselves happy and successful are really helpful which I think we can learn something from them.

First, we need an idol to set a good example for us. In the second class, Tal introduced his idol Marva Collins, an excellent educator who devoted all her life to the cause of education. Tal admired her very much and wants to be an educator like her. This reminded me of my idol Yansong Bai, the news host of CCTV-1. He is a thinking, wise, active and humorous man. He likes thinking, but what he thinks most is not he but the future of our nation and county. I want to be an honest, thinking, wise and 3

modest person just like him.

Second, we can put up some motto on the wall of our room to motivate ourselves.

For instance, Tal put up these mottos on the wall:" If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with success, unexpected in common hours." The other is:” Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish." All those motto are of great value, so I can't help writing them down to share with you.

As far as I am concerned, putting up some motto on the wall can really create a positive surrounding to motivate us. I remembered that when I was in Senior High school, I also liked putting some motto up on my desk or on the wall of my bedroom. For example, I would put up a motto like 〃No pains, no gains. Come on! 〃on my desk and a motto like "So long life exists, the struggle never rest'' on the wall of my room.

As a matter of fact, these mottos had a great influence on me. They motivated me to stick to my dream when I have the thoughts to give up. When I failed my exams or tired with study, they gave me the power and faith to hold on. So if you fear that 4

you will lose your morale or become lazy, putting up some motto on the wall to stimulate yourself.

Third, we should form a habit of thinking and asking questions. “Questions create reality." Asking a question and solve it,then we will have a sense of achievement. For instance, if you are not happy, you can ask yourself:” why am I unhappy? What should I do to make myself happy?” Then you think the questions carefully or ask other people for help, and you'll finally find the way to solve the problems. And then you'll be much happier.

On the other hand, I am not fully agreed with some of his words.

In the first class, Tal said that: “Happiness is much more contingent on our state of mind than our status or the state of our bank account." Yes, happiness is can't measured by money and power. It depends on our state of mind, just as the saying goes "Your attitude towards life determines how you live it.” But, I think happiness is based on a certain economic basis. If a person is worried about his food, safety and life every day, how could he get the sense of happiness? I rarely see a beggar or a vagrant who is very happy. Maybe, to them, life is more important than happiness. That's why I am not fully agreed with 5

his opinion. But it's only my personal point of view and maybe has something inappropriate.

In the end, just in the words of Tal, this class is for anyone who is extremely happy and wants to be happier, and anyone who is not happy and wants to be happier. I hope that every one of us will benefit a lot from this course and become much happier.
