Honesty

Honesty is a good virtue. It has always been an important part of the Chinese character. And it is widely advocated and commonly approved in our society that one should be an honest person, honest

both in word and in deed.

Honesty pays. Those who behave honestly, though they may sometimes suffer losses, will win others? trust and respect in the long run, while those going in for dishonest practice for long usually come to bad ends. Facts have proved the truth in the English proverb “Honesty is the best policy.” A good case in point is that corrupt officials, one after another, have been exposed and punished by law in our country. Chen XI-tong ,Wang Bao-sen, Hu Chang-qing, just to

name a few examples.

Honest is not out of style. Although dishonest conduct is still in existence in recent years, most of our people tend to pay respect to honest ones and feel disguised at dishonest ones. They hope for

honesty in all fields, for it is the foundation on which our country can stand among the nations in the world. In fact they are also working honestly for the good of the country and society. Many of them have made extraordinary achievements at their ordinary posts and have won people?s love and admiration. So we can say with pride and confidence that honesty is not and will never be out of style in our

society.

My View on College Students? Part-time Jobs

Nowadays, there is a wide discussion over whether college

students should take part-time jobs or not.

Some people think that there are many advantages for college students. Firstly, part-time jobs offer them opportunities to apply what they have learned in school into the practical use. And consequently, they will put all the efforts on what would be useful in future, which will shorten the distance between the practical use and the academic knowledge. Secondly, it also provides them the chance to experience making money through their own labor and then they would become more independent and self- confident. Thirdly, part-time experiences may be of help to their future careers. They

may well find their place in the future social life.

However, some people argue that doing part-time jobs has more disadvantages. The main job of college students is to study. If they have part-time job, they may have to reduce time for sleep, rest, study and activities. Most college students find it difficult to find the one which may be helpful for their major, and even impossible. So, it would waste the time which would be better to be spent on time. What?s more, students taking part-time jobs would find it difficult to concentrate their energy both on study and on work. Finally, they

may fail in their studies.

In my opinions, students can choose to take part-time jobs on the condition that they can find a point to balance between study and job. If not, taking part-time jobs will not do anything good to them.

Why Do People Like to Try Their Luck on Lottery?

Nowadays, caught by the spell of the lottery, many luck triers are fond of buying all kinds of lottery tickets, such as welfare lottery tickets, sports lottery tickets and even computer lottery tickets. The purpose of buying such tickets is to materialize their colorful and fanciful dreams. As a matter of fact, most people cannot resist buying

some whenever they see them. Some even spend hundreds and hundreds yuan to buy them so as to increase the possibility of winning the prize. Why do so many people try their luck on the

lottery tickets?

Ostensibly, there are many reasons for it, and the primary reason for the majority of lottery goers is to realize their

long-cherished dreams, such as to own a car, a luxurious flat, even to become super rich overnight. In reality, most people deem it as an

interesting way to make donations to society.

However, lottery is a kind of public drive which benefits the society. Thanks to the participation of so many people, a great deal of money is accumulated through the drive to promote our welfare. Thus in this way the heavy financial burden on the government is greatly relieved. To sum up, lottery does no harm to the luck triers

but much good to the nation.

Make Science and Technology Serve Mankind

Science and technology have been developing rapidly during the past ten years. Their development has brought lots of benefits to

mankind; for example, much of the heavy work which used to be done by hand has now been fulfilled by automatic machines, efficient robots and powerful computers. Man can, nowadays, travel to the far

corners of the world and even land on the moon.

Science and technology have at the same time, also brought harm and even disasters to us. Modern industry, as well as modern traffic conveniences, has created a serious problem of air pollution. The "green-house effect" is now threatening the existence of mankind. Worst of all, high tech has created all kinds of deadly

weapons such as nuclear missiles.

However, man is the decisive factor in the development of

science and technology. He can take strong measures to solve all those problems caused by the rapid development of high tech. I firmly believe that man is able to make science and technology serve

the interests of mankind.

Cloning

In 1997, the British scientists successfully cloned an adult sheep. Miraculously, the cloned sheep, named dolly, has the exact same

genes as the adult sheep from which she was cloned and the cell had been taken from the udder of an adult sheep. The achievement marks that another thing in science fiction has come true and that a world

with human clones is suddenly within reach.

The remarkable breakthrough in bioengineering soon caused worldwide concern. In the wake of the accomplishment, a worldwide debate was set off: Should scientists be allowed to clone animals and human beings? Is cloning morally wrong or dangerous? and so and

so forth.

How to look upon this new technique? In my opinion, first, cloning should be greatly esteemed and great thanks should be given to these inventors. Meanwhile, great efforts should be made to place this technique under strict control. Especially, we should adopt a law against human cloning since past experience tells us a new invention

may cause troubles if is misused.

Living In a Large City

Hundreds of people rush into cities, especially large cities. They come for better education and better jobs, for commerce and trade, for better chance to have access to the latest business and scientific

information, and for better medical care.

I enjoy living in a large city where life is convenient. Fast public transportation, a variety of shops and supermarkets, plenty of public

places for enjoyment and entertainment, all other modern

conveniences and above all, the best health care system make you live

in great comfort.

However, large cities are confronted with many problems, the biggest of all being the ever-increasing population flow toward the city, which results in crowded stinking buses, traffic jams, traffic accidents, poor housing conditions, and so on. Noise and pollution, mostly from factories and automobiles, are two more serious

problems, which are damaging people?s health.

Should Private Cars Be Encouraged?

There is a heated debate over private-owned cars. It is

commonly accepted that private cars can make us more comfortable. In contrast, others hold that private cars have given rise to a series of

problems.

Those who hold the first opinion suggest that each family should own a car. In their view, people are able to enjoy themselves in the country with a car. However, others believe that private cars are a source of air pollution. They argue that the car is also the major

cause of traffic jams on busy roads.

Considering one after another, I stand on the side of the former idea. First of all, the car is a sign of highly developed civilization. Furthermore, new energy can be used to minimize the pollution. Thirdly, a quickly developed automobile industry can provide jobs for millions of people. Therefore, each Chinese family should be

encouraged to own a car.

The Advantages of Hunting for Jobs on Internet

Recently there?s been a wave of hunting for jobs on internet. Instead of looking for a job in a personnel market or in the ads of newspapers and magazines, a job hunter tends to look for a job on the Net. Because of its convenience and high success rate and more opportunities on the Internet, In fact, many people now resort to the way of hunting for jobs, less depending upon the traditional way.

There are many advantages that people take the advantage of this modern scientific and technological product―Internet. In the first place, it?s very convenient. A job seeker can look for a job

without bothering to get recommendation form his friends, bosses, or wasting time at an employment exchange. In the second place, it?s

quite simple. A job hunter can get a job by simply clicking the ads online and sending one?s resume through an E-mail. Lastly, it?s fair, for everyone can utilize this modern means to win his or her opportunities, even if one fails to find a job.

In a word, I suppose, with the ever-increasing popularity of Internet, this new way of hunting for jobs will win favor among more and more job hunters in China.

Why is Internet getting so popular ?

With the arrival of the knowledge economy age, Internet, as a new media, has come into our life. Nowadays, getting on line and surfing the Internet for information has become popular in China, especially among college students and teachers. Why is Internet getting so popular in such a short time?

The popularity of Internet results from its great convenience and easy accessibility to information. Thanks to the Internet, a world of information is just a click away. E-mail is another contributing factor to its popularity. It can transmit your letter quickly, safely and accurately. Besides, Internet has some other uses. Doctors may use it to diagnose and treat their patients by discussing or exchanging

experiences with doctors in other parts of the world. Students may obtain new knowledge from a national long-distance educational system via Internet. Finally, businessman can conduct E-commerce or E-business on the net.

With so many uses and advantages, there is no doubt more and more people will be wired to the Internet-the information expressway. In short, with its high speed and efficiency, Internet will be more popular in China in the near future.

Success

The desire for success is universal. Especially nowadays , the possession of success is regarded by nearly everyone as the source of joy and self-confidence. Only with the help of success can you expect to see scientific, cultural and social development of human being. In contrast, without success, you cannot imagine what life itself would be like.

How to succeed, then? First, you ambition and ideal lead you to success. Without them no great achievements can come about. Second, you must make best use of limited time to learn unlimited

knowledge. Finally, you must work hard and get prepared to meet opportunities as they duly arrive. Because when an opportunity comes, it brings a promise but never realize it on its own.

As for me, I have always been taking care to choose a goal and a right path before anything important. Then I will work hard and perseveringly. So, I have made some achievements and I will do better.

Cheating on Exams

With the more and more important role a degree certificate is playing in finding a job after graduation, some students are engaged in cheating during examination. Take our university as an example. Half of the college students have admitted to cheating on exams at least once. Some even hire ringers to take tests for them.

Unfortunately, nowadays, many students in other universities are trying to fool the teachers in much the same way. Such academic

dishonesty is extremely harmful to the society as well as to the

cheaters themselves .Firstly, it puts honest students at a competitive disadvantage. Secondly, it undermines the very foundation of

academic learning on campus. To make things worse, the dishonest practice reveals the moral deficiencies as well as the academic weakness of the cheaters.

So, it is high time we took measures to put an end to such

dishonesty. In the first place, the colleges and universities should make severe rules and policies to punish those who cheat on exams. In the second place, the students themselves should always remember that, “Honesty is the best policy”. Only in this way can students develop in a healthy way both academically and morally.

Is It Important That Young People Know about the History of their

Country?

History is the written record of all that has gone on in a country from as far back as records are available. Many countries are able to trace their histories over thousands of years. In the case of the United States, the history is short. However, it is a dynamic history with a lot happening in a short time.

In order not to live in a vacuum, young people need to have a good grounding of the history of the country. History brings

awareness of how our ancestors lived and solved their problems. It enables us to appreciate the sacrifice they had to make in order that we may enjoy our lives today, and also brings to light some of the mistakes they made----so that we can learn from them and avoid making them again.

History has much to teach to those who are willing to learn. If young people were to be passionate about the history of their country, chances are that they will love their country more. Not knowing the past may result in the young people taking things for granted.

In conclusion, the quotation “those who ignore history are

doomed to repeat it” could be a good lesson for all of us----young and old ----to learn and always keep in mind.

Directions: You wish to study at a certain foreign university. Write a letter inquiring about the situation there as regards

accommodation , fees, and qualifications. You should write about 120 words.

Dear Professor Smith,

I am a Chinese citizen who wishes to study at your university. My plan is to start my course next term, and I would be grateful if you could be kind enough to provide me with certain essential information.

First, what qualifications do I need to follow a course of study at your university? I already have a master?s degree from a

university here in China, but I wonder if there are any other further academic requirements. Second, how much are the tuition fees?

Although I intend to be self-supporting, I would be interested to hear if there are any scholarships available for international students. Third, what is the situation as regards accommodation? I would prefer a single room, which is more conducive to studying, but if the rooms are expensive, I would be willing to share.

I look forward to your reply, and to attending your esteemed university.

Yours sincerely,

Bruce Wang

The Influence of Exercise on Our Health

It is known to all that exercise is beneficial to our health. Firstly, it greatly strengthens our hearts, lungs, bones and muscles, thereby changing our health for the better. Secondly, it enables our brains to react to what is going on around us more quickly. Lastly, it helps us breed optimism about our tough life.

However, it does not mean that we can turn a blind eye to the negative effects of exercise. If you are normally inactive and then, contrary to your usual habit, start a program of undue exercise, as many scientific studies reveal, chances are that you will have yourself injured. In addition, the more exercise those on a fat-reducing diet take, the more loss of iron they will suffer and the poorer health they will be in. Worst of all, excessive exercise can result in sudden death.

Therefore, a scientific approach must be adopted to exercise. It is advisable that we go in for physical exercise according to the health conditions of our own. In a word, exercise can do us both good or harm, all depending on the way we make use of it.

Does Money Really Talk?:

Nowadays money seems to mean more and more to us. There can be no denying that we need it to pay for our daily necessities, to buy a fine house or a luxury car, to pay for the tuition fees, and to see a doctor when we fall ill. Nevertheless, money does not mean everything for the following reasons:

First, we can not buy sincere friendship or true love no matter how wealthy we are. Likewise, we can not return to a younger age even though we are billionaires.

Secondly, we can by no means make ourselves more intelligent even when we are as rich as Bill Gates.

Lastly, money can not be used to buy natural beauty despite the fact that facial surgery can be performed to make us look more attractive with the help of money.

To sum up, money does mean a lot but not everything to us.

Film Is Giving Way to TV

During the period between 1975 and 1985,film-goers declined abruptly from 85,000 to about 12,000, while TV-watchers increased

sharply from 5,000 to more than 100,000.

Several reasons can account for this phenomenon. Compared with a film, TV is much cheaper and more convenient --you don't have to leave your house at all. Apart from that, you have many choices while watching TV, but a film concentrates on a certain topic. However, there are still a number of people who enjoy going to the cinema, generally for two reasons. On the one hand, the

audio-visual effect of a cinema is much better. On the other hand, in a quiet and comfortable place such as a cinema, you can concentrate

on what you are watching and get the most of the film.

1. On Open Policy

The open policy means that our country is open to investment, trade and technical and economic cooperation with other countries on the basis of equality and mutual benefit. The purpose of open policy is to acquire advanced technology, management skills to serve our socialist construction so as to promote the realization of the four modernizations. We must adhere to the open policy. Because

economic relations between states today have become increasingly close, and no country can possibly advance behind close doors. Only in this way, can we gradually close the gap between our country and the developed countries. Through the implementation of policy, we can learn advanced technology and managerial expertise from abroad; make full use of the foreign capitals to set up great

enterprises; absorb useful and healthy ideas and new knowledge of the modern civilization; and broaden our views and raise our level of competence.

2. The place of Science and Technology in Modern Life

Human life can not continue without science and technology. For many years, human society has developed with the advance of science and technology while the development of science and

technology has in turn brought the process to mankind. So the life we are living now is more civilized than that of our fore fathers. The development of science and technology has brought about many changes in people's life. For example, the invention of television and space rocket has opened a new era for mankind. Through the use of TV people can hear the sound and learn the events happening thousands of miles away. Owing to the invention of spaceship and rocket, the dream of man's landing on the moon has now come true. Science and technology also play an important role in our socialist construction. We may say, our socialist construction is just like a skyscraper, while science and technology are its base. Without the base, the skyscraper can't be built. Therefore, we should try our best to contribute to the development of science and technology so as to provide a more solid base to build our country.

3. Importance of Education

China, as a developing country, is determined to catch up with and even surpass the developed ones. I think that one of the best

possible ways to do so is to give first priority(优先)to the development of culture, science and especially education. In modern times, when science and technology are making great progress, the education of the work force is of primary importance. Moreover, many of the success in advanced countries have demonstrated that a nation 's prosperity mainly depends on the quality of its labour force, namely those who have been well educated. In a developing country such as China, our investment in culture, education and science, and especially elementary education, must enjoy top priority. This is

crucial(决定性的)for China to catch up with the developed nations in today's surging(汹涌的) waves of technological revolution. Otherwise, the gap between China and advanced countries will be widened rather than bridged.

4. Air Pollution

Air pollution is one of the major problems of the modern world.

A great deal of energy is needed to run the factories of modern

industrial nations. Automobile, trains, planes and busses need energy, too. Nearly all of this energy is produced by burning fuels. The burning produces wastes, some of which remain in the air, causing

air pollution. Scientists are finding ways to stop air pollution

especially in big industrial areas and densely-populated cities. They are studying new ways of generating electricity that may be less damaging to the environment. In the meantime, many power plants are being modernized to give off less polluted material. Also,

engineers try to design and locate new power plants to do minimum damage to the environment. However, it may be that we still have a long way to go before we have a "clean" world. Nearly all of the countries are trying hard to prevent and control air pollution. There indeed seems to be no end to tasks that environmentalists will be required to do. People will continually find new ways to control pollution.

5. Environmental Protection

Today the quality of our natural environment has become an important issue. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources and at the same time polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, life on earth cannot survive. Concerned people have made some progress in

environmental protection. Governments of many countries have established laws to protect the air, forests and sea resources and to

stop environmental pollution. Still more measures should be taken to solve environmental problems. People should be further educated to recognize the importance of the problems, to use modern methods of birth control, to conserve(保存) our natural resources and recycle(再循环) our products. We are sure that we can have a better and cleaner place in the future.

6. Automobiles

Automobiles, as a product of modern civilization, have been playing a vital part in the daily activities of human society. Industry needs automobiles for farming as well as transportation. Every day, automobiles drive people to and from work. On weekends

automobiles take families for joyful outings. And during holiday seasons, automobiles fill the highways everywhere, even in remote areas. It could be said that the wheels of automobiles move society forward. But automobiles have also given rise to a series of problems. For example, cities are overcrowded with automobiles. They create a lot of noise and traffic accidents which disable(伤残) or kill many people each year. Worst of all perhaps is the air pollution caused by the exhaust gases produced by automobiles. Some of the gases are highly toxic(有毒的) and a serious health hazard.

7. Computer

The computer is widely used in all fields of society. Today,

wherever you go, you will find computers being used. For example, computers are used in universities, large corporations, and small offices, etc. It has even entered the homes of ordinary people. As it is able to store and process a large amount of information, the computer bring about great convenience and high efficiency to people of all walks of life. Computers can help people in different ways. For example, computer help scientists in analyzing data and doing complex calculation. For another example, computers are

made use of by engineers in designing a plane, or a spaceship. Besides, computers may also play a great role in helping children with their lesson. Whatever you are doing, you many find computer a useful aid. However, the computer must be designed and instructed by man. What is more, it is true that computers can make decisions, but they need detailed instructions and programs prepared by humans to

operate. Therefore, the computer can never replace the human brain.

8. Travelling

It is exciting to visit different places. As you travel, you will see beautiful sceneries typical of the region. Besides, you can meet and make friends with people of different colors and races. Finally, you

can get to know the customs and living habits of the local people. Today people are so fond of travelling that tourism has become one of the faster growing industries in most countries. The main reason why people travel is, perhaps, for pleasure. For example, having worked hard throughout the weekdays, people will find a widened trip to the nearby mountains or beaches a real relaxation. For

another example, spending an annual holiday travelling abroad is an especially satisfying experience for those who do not have much of an opportunity to be away from their homelands. When people return from their travel, they will generally feel fresh and energetic, ready to work harder. Travelling is also one of the best means for learning. You may have read or heard about something but you can never get an accurate picture of it until you see it for yourself. Seeing is

believing. Furthermore, if you area careful observer, you can learn much during your travel about the geography, biology, and history of the places you visit. No matter how well educated you are, there is always a lot for you to learn through travelling. The knowledge acquired from travel, as you will have found in your life, is no less valuable than that from any influential reference book.

9. The World Population Explosion

The human race has experienced a consistent increase in

population since the beginning of its history. Famine and disease have done little to offset(抵消)this steady increase. Too many people are added annually to the population of the world. So both the causes of population increase and the results of having more people are

worth careful study. Culture evolution is the major factor responsible for population increase. Early in human development, people invented tools to hunt animals. Later they built shelters to protect themselves. Step by step, they made life easier. As a result, fewer died from natural forces, such as harsh climate and disease. In the past, when population grew, there was unexplored territory to inhabit. But now, almost all the habitable land has been explored. The world's population may reach 8.7 billion in 2033. It is clear that world population is a serious issue that needs careful attention. Human

beings are unique to solve problems through cultural evolution.(发展) Facing the world population explosion in the near future. We must carry out the birth control program in order to save the mankind and save the world.

10. Opening-door Policy is the Only Way to Make China Strong Modern Chinese history leads us to the conclusion that

socialism, not capitalism is best for China. But how a socialist China

should look at capitalism and more importantly, make use of the better side of capitalism for its own advantage is of vital(至关) importance to the country. As far as our country's economic

construction is concerned, taking advantage of the part of capitalism that is useful to us means we need to develop foreign trade, introduce advanced technology and better management, and make use of foreign funds. It also means we can absorb some of the economic theories, and make use of those economic policies, methods and measures that comply with(遵循) the law of mass production and a commodity economy. By opening our windows wider to the outside world, people can learn more about other peoples and learn to make sensible judgments. Absorbing the better part of the cultures of other people to enrich ourselves is the best way to safeguard our socialist culture. So taking advantage of capitalism and stepping up economic reforms is the only way to make China strong. Closing the county to international exchanges will only keep it weak.

11. Choosing an Occupation

Every one faces the problem of choosing an occupation after graduation from college or university, which plays a vital role in his

life. An appropriate occupation makes a man work with zest(热情) and vigor, as well as contribute to his country. To make a wise choice, two important things should be taken into consideration. One is the interest, the other, the demands of people and society. Only if the two aspects are connected, can a man show his talent and ability to the best advantage. If the two conflict, the former should be under the latter, for the people's interests are more important than the individual's. In regard to my choice in the future, I am fond of

learning foreign languages; what is more, with the implementation of the Open-Door Policy, exchange between home and abroad in economy and culture has been growing significantly, thus I'm determined to be a qualified interpreter.

12. The Brain and the Computer

Some recent developments in the computer industry make

scientists predict that the gap between human beings and machines will be closed about the year 20000. To understand the significance of this prediction let us compare the human brain with existing

computers. The brain consumes electrical energy at the rate of 25 watts and occupies a volume of one tenth of a cubic foot. The brain houses between 10 billion and 100 billion items of information. Every brain cell is directly connected to many other cells. As a result, the

cells in which information is stored can communicate with thousands of other cells. However, the computer consumes 1000,000 watts of electrical power and occupies hundreds of cubic feet of space. Its million items of immediately accessible information. In contrast, the computer memory is like a cell of pigeonholes, with no thinking capacity and no connections elsewhere. In a word, the electronic brains are hopelessly inadequate in comparison with the human brains.

13. Health and Life

As the saying goes, you don?t know what happiness is until you lose it? you don?t know what health is until you are ill. “Health is of vital importance to life” sounds like a cliche to everyone, but it is absolutely true. The negligence of the delicate balance of your body and soul, the harmful habits such as smoking, excessive drinking and burning mid-night oil will catch up with you someday. How many big plans are interrupted by bad health! Even a normal life is

unimaginable without the guarantee of health. How to keep fit is an eternal topic of diversity and controversy. Regardless of all the

different suggestions poured from all kinds of sources, one should do at least two things for him/herself. First, hold an active and optimistic attitude toward life and maintain a mental well-being. Second, live a

regular life and keep a balanced diet. Anyway, a healthy life is within reach when you begin to adjust your mind and body.

14. Energy Resources

China is rich in various energy resources. Coal and petroleum, for instance, are two major ones. They are essential in developing the country's industry, science and technology. China has done a great deal in the past few decades to raise its output of coal and petroleum. Three energy resources are being used up rapidly, With the building of four modernization, new industrial and science projects are springing up like bamboo shoots after rain. They are all big

consumers of energy resources. Besides there has been considerable waste in the utilization of these resources. To avoid an energy crisis in the future, the government must take certain measures. First, it should let people know the importance of saving energy. Second,

efforts should be made to develop new energy resources, such as solar energy, geothermal(地热) energy and so on. We have reason to be optimistic in this respect.

15. Competition

Competition makes people original and creative. It very

necessary to compete if human society wants to advance. (Even

animals compete for survival.) Without it, we would become lazy and nobody would rake any responsibility. When three monks live together, there will be no drinking water. This Chinese proverb vividly describes why China's productivity was so low before Mr Deng came to power. At that time, we had the so-called planned economy. There was no competition at all. So neither farmers nor workers worked hard. China was on the edge of collapse.

Competition can stimulate people to try their best to do anything. For example, in 100-meter race, each sportsman runs as quickly as possible, trying to win the champion. The same things happen in our society and in our daily life. If a company wants to surpass others, it must compete with them. It must raise its efficiency. All the

companies doing this will no doubt benefit the whole society and the whole human race. Being a student, I must compete with other students in our studies. I must study hard in all the fields so that I can be a useful man when I enter the society after graduation.

16. Students? Part-time Jobs

There are many advantages for a student to have a part time job. For instance, it helps him to realize that no success comes from nothing. It enables him to be independent and builds up his

self-confidence. Therefore, part-time jobs can get the students out of the ivory tower and give them the opportunity to know more of himself and of his personal value in society. As everything has two sides, the disadvantages can?t be ignored. Part-time jobs cut into students? study time; some even become so preoccupied with making money that they ca ?t focus their attention on studying. In the end, the students may fall behind or fail in their studies. In my opinion, students can choose to take up a job according to their own situation. The most important thing is for him to keep a good balance, put his study on top of the list and assign an adequate amount of time to it.

17.Wealth and Happiness

Everybody wants to get wealth. In today?s material world, making money or becoming wealthy symbolizes a person?s success and capability. Many people just make every effort, pay any price to attain greater wealth. With money, they can but nice, large

apartments in nice neighborhood; with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems with money, they can own stately luxury cars. Wealth seems to bring all happiness in life. In my opinion, people cannot do anything without money, but money is not

everything. What money will bring you depends on your personal belief and goal in life. If you are kind enough to help others,

especially the poor, money is a good thing to you. With it, you can do much more for the benefit of people and your country, and it will and to your own happiness. If you want money just for your own needs, you?ll never be satisfied or happy. In a word, you should have money spent for more people, only then can money be the source of your happiness.

18.Ideals

Everyone has his ideals. A businessman wishes to make greater profit; a farmer expects bumper harvests; a student tries to learn more and better. And everyone strives, with more or less effort, to realize his ideal. One should be sensible about whether his ideal is well founded or not. If it is, one has to plan and work hard for its realization. Effort, skill and persistence are all necessary. And very often, one has to get help from others, including advice and support in one form or another. My ideal is to become a doctor, It is said that the field of medicine is a well-paid profession, but I take it as a lofty profession entrusted with saving people?s lives. To realize my ideal I have concentrated on laboratory work to develop the analytical skills necessary to become a qualified doctor. I am sure I will realize my ideal if I persevere in this pursuit.

19.Popular Sports in China

Sports are flourishing in china now. More and more people are willing to take part in sports of different kinds, such as table-tennis, football, volleyball, and so on. Every year there are many matches played on the city, provincial or national level. Sports are no longer limited to a few professional players. Early in the morning people may be seen doing exercise. Martial arts (like Chinese boxing or

swordplay) which formerly were cultivated for self-defense, now have become a form of physical exercise and are practiced in parks, streets, gardens, or on campuses. In addition young and old people are also often seen running in order to build up their bodies. China promotes sports to enhance the physical condition of its people; she is

formulating policies to provide encouragement of this activity. She awards prizes to the excellent players for the best records both in china and the world. In the world the Chinese have become a strong people instead of “the weaklings of East Asia”.

20.Is Failure a Bad Thing?

Failure is what often happens. It is everywhere in our life.

Students may fail in exams, scientists may fail in their research work, and athletes may fail in competitions. Although failure happens to everyone, attitudes towards failure are various. Some people don?t

think their failure is a very important thing at all. So they pay no attention to it. As a result, they will have the same failure a period later. Some people think themselves are fools and lose their hearts in everything after they get a failure. Consequently, they spend their time and energy on useless things and they may really be fools as they have thought. Other people are quite different from the two kinds of people mentioned above. Instead of being distressed and lost, they draw a lesson from every failure and become more experienced. After hard work, they will be successful in the end. It is said that failure is the mother of success. Success will be gained after times of failures so long as we are good at drawing lesson from our failures. In my opinion, failure is not a bad thing, the really bad thing is taking a failure as failure or even lose our heart after failure.

21.Modernization of Family Life

With the rapid development of the society, family life is

becoming modernized. Years ago, people considered owing radios, sewing machines, watches and bicycles as being modernized. But in recent years, almost all families have TV sets, refrigerators and washing machines. It is very common to see people ride motorcycles or even drive private cars and more and more families have

telephones, computers and air-conditioners. The modernization of

family life brings us convenience and comfort. One may enjoy TV or radio programs, communicate with his friends through telephone or work with his computer while his washing machine, refrigerator and air-conditioners are running. And by car or motorcycle one can

quickly reach wherever he wants to go. In spite of this, these modern facilities also bring us disadvantages. For example, radiation from TV sets and computers is harmful to our health; improper driving of cars and motorcycles becomes the major cause of traffic accidents. The quietness of a family is often disturbed by a false dialing or

unwelcome phone call. But it is believed that these disadvantages will be disposed of with the improvement of modernization and our life will be more healthy and more comfortable.

Dec.18,2003 Thursday

Sunny, Fine, Rainy,

Snowy

How People Spent Their Holidays

Year 1990 1995 2000

Traveling 37% 51% 76%

Staying at home 63% 49% 24%

How People Spent Their Holidays

As can be seen from the table, the past decade have witnessed dramatic changes in the way people spent their holiday between 1990

and 2000.In 1990, 63% of people spent their holidays at home, while the figure dropped considerably to 24% in 2000. It is obvious from the table that people tended to be more and more mobile, and they

wanted to get entertainment in the outside world.

What contributed to these changes? I think the reasons are as follows. To start with, with the rapid development of economy, people earn by far more money than they used to. Thus, people are able to afford

traveling expenses. Secondly, people think it important to get well-informed about the outside world in this new era when everything is on the move. Traveling, of course, is a sure way to achieve this goal. What's more, in this competitive society, people are

usually under great stress. However, it is not difficult to find traveling an effective way to relieve people's stress and get relaxation. Last but not least, by traveling outside, people are close to nature, which is not only beneficial to both their health and peace of mind.

In conclusion, people prefer to go traveling rather than stay at home during holidays for a combination of reasons. Moreover, it seems

that this trend will last in the foreseeable future.

Health Gains in Developing Countries

Health Gains in Developing Countries

During the period from 1960 to 1990, the life expectancy of developing countries rose from 40 years to nearly 60 years, while infant mortality decreased from 200 deaths per 1000 births to around

100.

We believe that three reasons can account for this phenomenon. First, economy develops quickly in developing countries during this period, and living quality improves significantly as a result. Second, people's health conditions also become better and better with the development of national health care systems. When they become richer and richer, they care more about personal health conditions. Third, medical sciences also develop at a fantastic speed, and it is much safer for

mothers to give birth.

We are happy to see that things are becoming better and better nowadays. We can imagine that people will live longer and the infant

mortality will again fall. [1996.6. CET-6]

increased sharply from ________ to _______.

2) Several reasons can account for this phenomenon. Compared with _________ is much cheaper and more convenient__________ . Apart

3) However, there are still a number of people who _________, generally for two reasons. On the one hand,________. On the other

hand, ________.

Film Is Giving Way to TV

Film Is Giving Way to TV

During the period between 1975 and 1985,film-goers declined abruptly from 85,000 to about 12,000, while TV-watchers increased

sharply from 5,000 to more than 100,000.

Several reasons can account for this phenomenon. Compared with a film, TV is much cheaper and more convenient --you don't have to leave your house at all. Apart from that, you have many choices while watching TV, but a film concentrates on a certain topic.

However, there are still a number of people who enjoy going to the cinema, generally for two reasons. On the one hand, the audio-visual effect of a cinema is much better. On the other hand, in a quiet and comfortable place such as a cinema, you can concentrate on what you

are watching and get the most of the film.

(Heading)

(Inside Address)

(Salutation)

如:My dear father,Dear Tom等。

例如:Dear Prof. Tim Scales, Dear Dr. John Smith。

Dear Sir(s), Dear Madam, Dear

Sir or Madam.

Dear Mr. Smith,

Dear Ms. Smith, Dear Dr.Smith, Dear Prof.Smith.

(Body of the Letter)

(Complimentary Close)

Your loving grandfather,Lovingly yours,

Lovingly,等;

Yours cordially,Yours affectionately, Best

regards, Best wish, Love等;

Truely yours(Yours truely),Faithfully yours

(Yours faithfully)等;

Yours obediently(Obediently yours),Yours

respectfully(Respectfully yours)等;

Yours

Dear Prof. James,

As one of your students, I am writing to ask for your kind assistance. I wish to enroll in College of Computer at Oxford University, for which I am required to provide a letter of recommendation. As a senior professor in your field, one of my most respected college teachers and a person who knows me very well, you are the most

suitable referee for me.

As you know, I have laid a solid foundation in computer science. I would be grateful if, in the letter, you would confirm that I have adequate qualifications to follow the course. Would you be so kind as to give a brief introduction to my academic performance during my undergraduate studies, especially that under your supervision? Besides, your personal opinion of me will carry special weight. I have

to submit the letter next month.

Thank you so much for your generous help in this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Henry Scott

范文

Dear Xiao Wang,

Words failed me to express my excitement when I learned that you would like to spend your holiday together with me. It has been three years since we graduated from high school. I miss you so much that I even can't wait to see you. Now that it will be the first time you visit Beijing, I am sure that your journey will be exciting, rewarding and

full of a lot of fun.

I've made a rough plan for this holiday as follows. On the first day you arrive here, I will show you around our new campus. Especially, I will take you to visit our newly-built modem library. During the second three days, we'd better go sightseeing around Beijing. We can visit some famous scenic spots and historical sites, such as Summer Palace, the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, etc. On the fifth day, we can visit the Beijing Zoo, since you are quite interested in wild animals. The next day, we can do some shopping. There are many splendid markets and plazas in Beijing. On the last day, you can have a good rest before setting off. If there is anything inconvenient for

you in this plan, please let me know immediately.

By the way, since lots of people will go traveling in this holiday, it must be crowded on the train. So you should take care of your luggage. Bring more clothes with you because Beijing is much colder than Kunming at this time. And don't forget to tell me when you will

arrive so that I'll pick you up at the airport.

I am looking forward to your reply and wish you a god journey.

Yours,

Zhang Ying

Dear Mr. / Ms,

I was very concerned when I received your letter of yesterday complaining that the central heating system in your new house had

On referring to our earlier correspondence, I find that I had mistaken the date for completion. The fault is entirely mine and I

deeply regret that it should have occurred.

I realize the inconvenience our oversight must be causing you and will do everything possible to avoid any further delay. I have already given instructions for the work to have priority and the engineers working on the job to be placed on overtime. These arrangements

should see the installation completed by next weekend.

Yours faithfully
