Should people start a project after finishing another, or should they do several projects at a time?
Multitasking is prevalent in today’s society for the reason that many people believe it allows us to work more efficiently. From my viewpoint, however, this is now always the case. Whether it can elevate our working efficiency depends on what type of projects we are dealing with. When we are doing projects that require the same kind of knowledge, it is fine to do several projects at a time. As for projects that are of different fields, we had better start a project after finishing another.
Projects requiring the knowledge of one area should be tackled at the same time. When doing this kind of tasks, people do not have to be diverted if they deal with more than one task, because of the fact that all the projects are of the same field and you do not have to change your way of thinking. Thus people will be able to finish the tasks in a shorter time without lowering the quality of the projects. Take teachers grading exams for example. When teachers check the answers of students, they do no usually grade answers of all the questions of one student before they move on to answers of another student. Instead, they grade the answers of all the students of the same question at a time. Thus it will not require much effort to memorize the answers because repetition in short time is much easier.
Projects of different fields, on the other hand, should be finished one by one. If people tackle tasks with various areas of knowledge, it is hard for them to transfer from one task to another without a pause. It is almost impossible for them to become completely concentrated on each of the projects. Not only will it slow down their speed, but will make the chances of making mistakes higher. For instance, if a person talks on the phone while he is driving, he has to pay attention to the condition of the traffic and what the other person is talking about at the same time. Thus he is likely to ignore changes of the road condition or warning on the sides of the road, making mistakes that might cause a severe accident. Therefore multitasking can be hazardous in certain situations.
To sum up, we should distinguish between situations where multitasking can and cannot be applied. If is appropriately carried out, it can benefit us, otherwise it may do harm.
