Buster Brown was a thief—and a good one, too, he thought. He’d never been caught by the police because he never took chances. He was always prepared for any unforeseen event or emergency.

Confidently, he stood outside a house and read the sign on the front gate. “Don’t worry about the dog—be careful with the owner!” it said. Buster smiled and found his way in.

The house looked quite normal outside, but inside it was very a dog came into the room. It stopped when it saw Buster, then wagged its tail madly and went over to him, licking his hand.

“Good boy,” Buster whispered. “What a great guard dog you are-trying to lick me to death.” Satisfied that he’d made friends with the dog, Buster began to wander round the house, choosing items to put in his bag. His skilled eyes picked out only the best objects: a pair of silver candleholders, a silver tea-and-coffee service, etc… His new friend, the dog, sat and watched, as if wondering what was happening.

“Well, boy,” Buster whispered, finally. “That might do. Any more and I won’t be able to carry it!” He swung the heavy bag onto his shoulders, just as the lights came on, nearly blinding him. He shielded his eyes with his hand.

served to bring attention to his published work. At that time, the public lecture was a very popular form of entertainment, and audiences’ expectations ran high, but Mark Twain never failed to amuse them.

Twain also wrote on amusing subjects. In 1873, he released a book called The Gilded Age. The book was a satire of the very wealthy of the time. A satire is a work that makes fun of bad human behavior, such as wasteful spending. Twain made people laugh at the wastefulness of the rich. In 1889, Mark Twain took on other members of the Establishment (权势集团). He wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, about a boy who travels back to the time of King Arthur. It may be the first time travel in literature. Twain made fun of those who were given advantages not because they had earned them but because of their family connections. If you have never read any of Mark Twain’s works, try reading A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, or The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Many things separate the British and the Chinese culturally, but there is at least one thing they share—tea. It came from China in the first place, but perhaps nowhere was it taken up so eagerly than in a land thousands of miles away.

It is safe to say that above coffee, above beer, above any other kind of drink you could mention, tea is the British national drink—and has been for centuries.

第 4 页 Of course, British tea drinking and Chinese tea drinking are different kinds of habit. Compared to the artfulness of Chinese tea drinking, the British tea habit is rather ordinary. And unlike the large

The key difference that would strike a Chinese visitor to Britain observing the British taking their tea is the use of milk in tea. The British drink “black” tea—hongcha—and it has a rather bitter flavor on its own. For this reason milk is added. The milk gives the tea a creamy taste and makes it easier to go down quickly.

That visitor would also observe that the British, unlike the Chinese, are not generally sippers (小口喝饮料的人) of their “cuppa”.

Many think of the drinking of tea in Britain as an upper class affair. They believe that tea is drunk in the afternoon by polite, well-to-do groups of ladies while they chat. That image is misleading. Tea is the drink that is drunk at any time of the day—at work or at home. Every workplace has at least a tea-making machine.

47. The passage is written mainly to ________.

A. introduce British tea

B. share a passion for tea C. compare different tea cultures D. advertise tea-making machines 48. What does the underlined word “samey” probably mean?

A. boring B. having little variety C. artful

D. bitter and black

49. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. China and Britain share many cultures other than tea.

B. Chinese tea drinking habit is more impressive than that of the British. C. British people prefer black tea. D. British people drink tea quickly. 50. What is the author’s opinion of tea drinking?

A. It is mostly rich people who drink tea.

B. Tea drinking is a symbol of social status. C. Tea drinking is part of everyday life in Britain. D. Tea should be drunk with milk.
