Satan in Paradise Lost

The seventeenth century literature was a period concerned with the tremendous social upheavals of that time. The idea such as religious, toleration, separation of church and state gradually took root among the people. Moreover, contradiction between the feudal system and the bourgeoisie had reached its peak and leaded to a revolutionary outburst. Because of its political and religious backgrounds, the literature during the seventeenth century had a strong touch of politics and religion.

John Milton was one of the greatest writers in the seventeenth century. Among Milton’s great works, Paradise Lost was the most profound one at that time. In the meanwhile, people had a deep impression of the image of Satan. This paper will talk about my impression of Satan.

Many scholars have argued about the image of Satan for centuries. Some treat Satan as a revolutionist and the rest of them identify Satan as an absolute devil, but neither of them has detailed evidence to prove their ideas. For me, Satan is a real hero.

篇二 :失乐园读后感 英文版On the Image of Satan in Paradise Lost

On the Image of Satan in Paradise Lost

The success of Milton?s Paradise Lost owes much to the depiction of the main epicimage of Satan whose attributes enable him to achieve tragic status. Although Satan may be an epic machine, he is best portrayed as the tragic anti-hero of paradise Lost. The critics in the world have been concerning the image of Satan in Paradise Lost, whose complexity makes the poem more controversial. The reason why the image under Milton?s pen is so complex is that the Satan attracts the poet?s inner force, which drives him to change the people?s traditional ideas and cause resonance of all the revolutionaries.

Satan in the Bible is an image of devil. But in Paradise Lost, Satan challenges the authority of God and want to be free, he is a fighter for freedom. The poet portrayed Satan as a brave hero that went to get rid of god?s domination. In Paradise Lost, the Satan was the most successful image the author shaped. The allure of free will is where the attractiveness and power of Satan's character lies. Stanley Fish in his essay, ?The Harassed Reader in Paradise Lost,” argues that Satan possesses a form of heroism which is easy to admire because it is visible and flamboyant and that, on that basis, Satan?s attractiveness is only initial. Milton was, undoubtedly, conscious that he was in danger of portraying Satan as too much of a heroic figure and made efforts to be little him through the use of unflattering imagery, and by highlighting his less complimentary characteristics.

篇六 :The_Great_Gatsby_英文读后感

Book Report of The Great Gatsby

1. About the author.

F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St Paul, Minnesota of mixed Southern and Irish descent. He was given three names after the writer of The Star Spangled Banner, to whom he was distantly related. His father, Edward Fitzgerald, was a salesman, a Southern gentleman, whose furniture business had failed. His greater impact to him was “even if your business has failed,we have to maintain the habit of generous style”. Mary McQuillan, his mother, was the daughter of a successful wholesale grocer, and devoted to her only son. Fitzgerald entered Princeton University in 1913, where he spent most of his time doing social activities. He left his studies in 1917 because of his poor academic records, and took up a commission in the US Army. His experiences during World War I were more peaceful than Hemingway's - he never saw action and even did not go to France. The turning point in his life was when he met Zelda Sayre while he was at one of the bases where he trained in 1918, herself as the daughter of a justice from Alabama Supreme Court and an aspiring writer. He proposed to her but failed as she thought he was just a poor boy. In 1920 appeared Fitzgerald’s first novel, This Side of Paradise. The book gained a success which Fitzgerald celebrated energetically in parties and married Zelda successfully. Zelda danced on people's dinner tables in endless parties to celebrate the immediate success. But that was not to be the ending for the Fitzgerald. They lived in New York City. He drank too much. She spent too much money. He promised himself to live a less costly life. Always, however, he spent more than he earned from writing. In 1925, Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby, considered great work. Although it initially met with little commercial success, this novel about the American dream of material success has become one of the most popular widely read and critically acclaimed works of fiction in American literature. The life of the title character, Jay Gatsby, has been compared to Fitzgerald’s life. While living in the French Riviera, Zelda’s illness became serious. She suddenly began to practice ballet, dancing night and day. After a second nervous breakdown, she was hospitalized for mental illness in Carolina. During the last years of his life, Fitzgerald lived in Hollywood, earning his living as a screenwriter. He died of heart attack at the age of 45. In 1948, the hospital at which Zelda was a patient caught fire, causing her death.
