Impressions of Pride and Prejudice

"It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in need of a wife ."The opening sentence of Pride and Prejudice left deep impression on readers almost two centuries ago. Jane Austen's tale of love and economics reaches us once more with the energy of a thorough novelty.

"Pride and Prejudice" has been a favorite novel of mine since I first read it and I've seen Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson, Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle and now Matthew MacFadyen and Kiera Knightly. That movie has such a strong appeal to me, I was totally obsessed by it.Amazingly enough I've never been disappointed. The material seems to be full proof. Colin Firth's Darcy, in many ways, is the Darcy I've always imagined. He's been an actor I've followed feverishly since his glorious Adrian LeDuc in "Apartment Zero", Matthew MacFadyen was totally new to me but he managed to create that sense of longing that makes that final pay off so satisfying. Kiera Knightly is a ravishing revelation. I must confess, I didn't remotely imagined that she was capable of the powerful range she brilliantly shows here. The other big surprise is Joe Wright, the director, in his feature film debut which is more than promising, it's extraordinary. The photography, the art direction and the spectacular supporting cast, in particular Donald Sutherland and Brenda Blethyn,

1. Summary

Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece of Jane Austen (16 December 1775 – 18 July 1817) who is an outstanding English novelist. Her works of romantic fiction set among the gentry have earned her a place as one of the most widely read and most beloved writers in English literature. In the novel Pride and Prejudice, Austen mainly describes four marriages: Mr. Collins and Mrs. Charlotte; Wickham and Lydia; Bingley and Jane; Darcy and Elizabeth. She uses her ironic and witty words to criticize the pursuit of money and status in marriage and emphasis the importance of true love in marriage.

The main focus of the novel are Darcy and Elizabeth. Because of the first bad impression of Darcy that he is arrogant, conceit and snobbish, Elizabeth is easily fooled by Wickham who is charming and well-spoken. She is deeply convinced that Darcy has done those bad things to Wickham. Through her conjecture, Elizabeth believes that Darcy has interfered in the affairs of separating Jane and Bingley. Because of her misunderstanding and misjudgment of Darcy, Elizabeth rejects Darcy's proposal without any hesitation and even says"...I felt that you were the last man in the world whom I could ever be prevailed on to marry." But after reading Darcy's confession letter, Elizabeth totally realizes how big the mistake she has made. She gradually finds out the good merits of Darcy especially his changing in manner and her affection towards Darcy begins to raise. After Elizabeth knows the truth of Darcy's assistance in saving her sister Lydia's reputation, they both realizes each other's love and get married eventually.

Pride and Prejudice

Adapted from Jane Austin’s novel, the movie Pride and Prejudice has impressed me a lot .The plot brings me back to the late 1980s conservative England society where the story is set.

Though born in a small landowner family, Elizabeth has a strong sense of self-respect. Once rejected by Darcy for the dancing, she considers him as an arrogant man and determines to leave him aside. But she never knows that Darcy has fallen in love with her at the first sight and this rude behavior is probably due to shyness. In addition, Darcy persuades Bingley to leave Elizabeth’s sister Jane. Thus, when Darcy shows his affection for her, she rejected him firmly. After many things, Elizabeth eventually realizes that Darcy gradually turns to be a very helpful and kind-hearted man and accepts his affection. It is obvious that they both dare love in spite of the wide gap between family status.

Elizabeth,the heroine,is from a poor family of a small town.She has four sisters,but she is different from them.She is beautiful and thoughtful.

The first time she met the hero,Darcy,she felt very angry,because Darcy said,Perfectly tolerable,Elizabeth is not handsome enough to tempt me.It hurt her feeling.What’s worse,Wick ham cheated Elizabeth,which made Elizabeth misunderstand Darcy.The scene which gives me the deepest impression is Darcy expressed his love to Elizabeth.He said,＂I have struggle in vain and can bear it no longer.These past months have been a torment .I have fought against judgment,my family’s expectation,the inferiority of your birth,my rank.＂Elizabeth felt very surprise and angry.So she replied,＂I appreciate the struggle you have been through,and Iam very sorry to have cause you pain.＂She refuse him.Although Darcy expresses his love,he is also very pride.

Pride and Prejudice

When I first know this book by watching the movie long before, I just considered it to be a love story. But now after reading the book myself, I find it’s far more than a love story , it’s also the illustration of the society in Britain in the 18th century.

Pride and prejudice are two weaknesses in our personal qualities。 Elizabeth and Darcy couldn’t avoid that ,either。 Darcy is a rich young man and used to be very proud, he always feels superior to the county people. His proud leave a bad impression on Elizabeth, a clever and beautiful girl who always had her own opinions. then in the course of nature, she began to have prejudice on him, and kept misunderstanding him under Wickham’s evil speaking. Finally, they reconciled and get married.

From their love story I realize that it’s stupid to judge a person just by the first impression and always have prejudice on the person who you dislike, and pride sometimes will make you far away from the people. From the book, we can see, because Darcy’s proud, he offended the girl he loved, and because of the prejudice, Elizabeth was failed to see the merits of Darcy, but fortunately, they didn’t miss each other finally. Their love was romantic and also realistic.
