The Little Prince

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is both a pioneer of aviation and a well-known French

writer. He was born in Lyon, France, in 1900. At an early age, he dreamed of a life of

adventure and wanted to become a naval officer. Finally, in 1927, after serving as a

mechanic, Saint-Exupéry became a pilot, opening up new air routes over the

Mediterranean Sea, North Africa, and the Sahara Desert. Because of the danger of

flying, he had a number of accidents, but he escaped any major injuries.

For Saint-Exupéry, flying was not just piloting an airplane; it was a time for

meditation and reflection. While in the air, Saint-Exupéry would think deeply about

solitude, friendship, the meaning of life, the human condition, and liberty. He decided

to publish his reflections into a book, which was successful.

The Dangers of Narrow-Mindedness

The Little Prince exposes the ignorance that accompanies an incomplete and narrow-minded perspective. In Chapter IV, for example, when the Turkish astronomer first presents his discovery of Asteroid B-612, he is ignored because he wears traditional Turkish clothing. Years later, he makes the same presentation wearing European clothing and receives resounding acclaim. Because the three-petaled flower described in Chapter XVI has spent its whole life in the desert, it incorrectly reports that Earth contains very few humans and that they are a rootless, drifting people.

Book Review

From the article, we can learn about Professor Huang’s attitude of learning and life.

Many of us like to run with the flow and just follow the road our parents designed for us. We came to the college not because we want to increase knowledge. Don’t have the courage to enter the society and want to enjoy the school life at ease, which is the reason. After the college entrance examination, we lose our aims. Books are thrown aside; study is no longer our top priority. Computer is much more popular than book. More freedom we have, lazier we are. All we expect that we can pass the exam rather than get high grades.

Becoming an English major student may not somebody’ first choice and he/she won’t get job to do with English. That can’t be the excuse to skip most the classes. Only adapted to the environment then you can change it. Dislike can not to be a reason for not to do something. Pro. Huang’s English was worse than his classmates at the beginning; he tried to change instead of give up. When he found that he can’t, he still did not give up. Through his tireless efforts eventually he cached up. He was sent to Australia while he wanted to go to British. Instead of complaining, he became an Australian literature expert. Through four-year’s learning, you have to know more about your professional knowledge than other majors. When I compared my CET-6’s score with my secondary schoolmates who once had the same English level with me, I’m surprised. They got much higher grades than me and even higher than most of my classmates. It is noteworthy that they are not English major students. Then I made a decision to think about my college and the future.
