Lord of the Flies
The questions about human nature have been debated for thousands of years, and there are different judgments. After I have finished reading Lord of the Flies which is written by William Golding, I hold an idea that human nature is evil.
At the beginning of Lord of the Flies, the story reads not so attractive with slow plot, simple dialogue and not surprising scene description. However, when I read two thirds of the novel this far, I suddenly feel these simple dialogues seem to have more profound significance. As far as I am concerned, the children in the novel are far beyond the children’s behavior and characteristics themselves. They represent the society and the people, especially the adult society.
In my opinion, the tragedy of all things originates from the fire and the hunting in the novel. Facing the situation of living in an uninhabited island, one begins to question which is more important: fire or meat. The fire stands for civilization, and the hunting stands for violence. Lord of the Flies dramatizes a fundamental human struggle: the conflict between the civilization and the violence. The civilization means people behave peacefully and have common goals, while the violence which is against civilization means anarchy and chaos. Also, I find that the artistic feature of Lord of the Flies is that the combination of symbol and realistic depiction. The descriptions of several children are representative, which let me understand the novel much better.
