David Copperfield’s father had dead six months before he was born. He lived with his mother and their housekeeper Peggotty. He has a happy childhood. But when his mother met and married a cruel man, Mr. Mudstone,all things changed. Mr. Mudstone disliked David, he sent David to a boarding school. David was treated badly at school.

Two months into the new terms. David was called to the Creakle’s parlor. He was told that his mother was dead. He felt very sad and cried. After that, he was forced to work at a warehouse. Then, he found his great aunt, Miss. Betsey Trotwood, and lives in a happy life with her. He was sent to a new school. There, he met Mr. Wick field, Agnes and had a good time with them.

David went to work at a law firm. He found out Uriah Heep’s plot with Mr. Micawber. He helped Agnes and her father and married Agnes several years later. He lived in a good life and had happy endings.

Book review on David Copperfield

I. Introduction

The book was written by Charles Dickens, who was a famous writer in England. He was an originator representative figure of critical realism. He was born in a poor family. He studied in school off and on because of the lack of money. He lived a hard life and was forced to go the factory to be a young worker. The he went to attorney office as a worker for five years. After that he was an interviewee in newspaper office. From then on he started his writing career. His hard experience made him care about the life of the civilians. He wrote novels to criticize the unfair society as an originator representative figure of critical realism. The book described the life of a boy whose name is David Copperfield. He was a posthumous child. His new father was wicked. After a long journey, he found his aunt and lived a better life. Then happened a lot of things, but the result was bright. Even though his wife Dora was dead, he went abroad for three years. When he came back, he found Agnes loved him all the time. So they got together.

看了《大卫科波菲尔》,忽然发现了这个世界的疯狂,也看到了金钱的力量——它既可以帮一个人完成愿望,但是,同时它也能让一个人家破人亡。狄更斯正是从人道主义的思想出发,暴露了金钱的罪恶。

大卫科波菲尔是个可怜的孩子,他没有爸爸。然而,更意想不到的事情发生了,摩德斯通娶了大卫的母亲,做了大卫的继父。但他异常暴虐,不仅监视着大卫和他母亲的一举一动,还在看不顺眼的时候鞭打他。因此,继父不仅没有使他享受到父爱的温暖,反而比原来更加痛苦!更可恶的是,他与学堂勾结,在大卫身上系上一块告示:“当心他,他咬人。”这仅仅是因为大卫在不屈服他的殴打时做的唯一的自我反抗,咬住了堵住他的嘴和手,一种本能的行为。摩德斯通就用如此卑鄙的手段对付一个小孩,后来,他的母亲被摩德斯折磨而死。还好有贝西姨婆的收留,并且将他灌输知识教育文化。对他受益匪浅。

在这本书中我最赞赏的就是贝西姨婆和佩葛蒂,先说贝西姨婆,她在某些方面与摩德斯通小姐有相似之处,但她们有本质的不同:贝西姨婆脾气古怪,她对驴子非常敏感,驴子从门前草地经过是她一生最为气愤的。她特立独行,敢说敢干,不顾世俗的眼光,略带男性气质,偏重理性,但是贝西姨婆博爱、善良、仁慈、心软、重感情,虽然她讨厌男孩,但是大卫投奔她后,她又收留了大卫,并把摩德斯通姐弟骂得痛快淋漓。她对大卫的教导:永不卑贱,永不虚伪,永不残忍,这可以成为一个人立身行事的座右铭,在她的抚养爱护下,大卫健康成长,并成为一位著名作家。贝西姨婆可怜迪克,收留他,欣赏他,给他舒适安逸的生活,她是珍妮的监护人,还监护其他一些人,教育他们,让他们学会保护自己。她对朵拉那么疼惜与宠爱,一点也不嫌弃她。贝西姨婆对她的丈夫仍然没有忘怀,即使他抛弃了她,另寻新欢,变成一个一无所有的浪荡人,但他只要来向贝西姨婆要钱,她就会给,虽然受他的威胁,但这也说明贝西姨婆重感情、有情义。贝西姨婆是一个很有头脑、很能干的女人,她了解许多商业活动,她在破产时隐瞒了两千英镑的财产,她故意这样做,为了锻炼大卫,让他学会适应困境,战胜困难,能够承担生活的重任。那段时间给了大卫很好的锻炼,靠自己的努力,证实了自己的能力,不负贝西姨婆的一番苦心。贝西姨婆虽然脾气古怪,性情奇特,但她的品德却令人尊敬,值得信赖。

《大卫·科波菲尔》是19世纪英国批判现实主义大师狄更斯的一部代表作。在这部具有强烈的自传色彩的小说里,狄更斯借用“小大卫自身的历史和经验”,从不少方面回顾和总结了自己的生活道路,反映了他的人生哲学和道德理想。

《大卫·科波菲尔》通过主人公大卫一生的悲欢离合,多层次地揭示了当时社会的真实面貌,突出地表现了金钱对婚姻、家庭和社会的腐蚀作用。小说中一系列悲剧的形成都是金钱导致的。摩德斯通骗娶大卫的母亲是觊觎她的财产;爱弥丽的私奔是经受不起金钱的诱惑;威克菲尔一家的痛苦,海穆的绝望,无一不是金钱造成的恶果。而卑鄙小人希普也是在金钱诱惑下一步步堕落的,最后落得个终身监禁的可耻下场。狄更斯正是从人道主义的思想出发,暴露了金钱的罪恶,从而揭开“维多利亚盛世”的美丽帷幕,显现出隐藏其后的社会真相。 在人物的塑造上,大卫·科波菲尔无疑倾注了作者的全部心血。不论是他孤儿时代所遭遇的种种磨难和辛酸,还是他成年后不屈不挠的奋斗,都表现了一个小人物在资本主义社会中寻求出路的痛苦历程。经历了大苦大难后尝到人间幸福和温暖的大卫,靠的是他真诚、直率的品性,积极向上的精神,以及对人的纯洁友爱之心。安妮斯也是作者着力美化的理想的女性。她既有外在的美貌,又有内心的美德,既坚韧不拔地保护着受希普欺凌的老父,又支持着饱受挫折之苦的大卫。她最后与大卫的结合,是“思想和宗旨的一致”,这种完美的婚姻使小说的结尾洋溢一派幸福和希望的气氛。他们都是狄更斯的资产阶级人道主义理想的化身。这种思想的形成与狄更斯个人的经历和好恶是分不开的。他始终认为,处于受压迫地位的普通人,其道德情操远胜于那些统治者、压迫者。正是基于这种信念,小说中许多普通人如渔民辟果提、海穆,尽管家贫如洗,没有受过教育,却怀有一颗诚朴、善良的心,与富有的斯提福兹及其所作所为形成了鲜明的对比。

当然,这种强烈的对比还反映着狄更斯本人的道德观:“善有善报,恶有恶报”。这部小说里各类主要人物的结局,都是沿着这种脉络设计的。如象征着邪恶的希普和斯提福兹最后都得到了应有的惩罚;而善良的人都找到了可喜的归宿。狄更斯希翼以这样的道德观来改造社会,消除人间罪恶,这是他的局限性所在。
