Report of Rip Van Winkle

These days I’ve read a passage named Rip Van Winkle. It’s a short story written by Washington Irving published in 1819. The story has become a part of cultural mythology: even for those who have never read the original story, "Rip Van Winkle" means either a person who sleeps for a long period of time, or one who is inexplicably (perhaps even blissfully) unaware of current events.

Washington Irving is an American author, short writer, essayist, poet ,travel book writer, biographer, and columnist .Irving has been called the father of the American short story .he is best known for “The legend of Sleepy Hollow”. His main works include A history of new York, Bracebridge Hall, The Sketch Book…Irving was born into a wealthy New York merchant family .Form a very early age , he began to read widely and write juvenile poems ,essays and plays .

Book Report of Rip Van Winkle

Rip Van Winkle is a famous work of Washington Irving, an American writer in the 19th century, who hankered for rural life and ancient lifestyle. And he particularly paid attention to anecdotes and the customs of remote villages.

The background of Rip Van Winkle is a small village of America in colonial period. The story is about the life and strange experience of the main character Rip Van Winkle. Rip was a simple good-natured man, a kind neighbor and an obedient hen-pecked husband. He was willing to help his neighbors without hesitation but he hated to do any work to make money. On the contrary, his wife was very bad-tempered and liked to yell at him. To avoid the scold of his wife he went to the woods with a gun and his dog. Then he met some strange men and he taste a kind of beverage, and then he fell into a deep sleep. When he awaked, it was twenty years later but he thought it was the second day. When he went to home, he found that everything changed, the life in his memory became history and the present time is unfamiliar to him.

The story Rip Van Winkle is about an idle, ambitionless, inagressive person named Rip Van Winkle. In order to avoid his wife non-stop nagging at home, he seeks refuge in the mountain where he meets several dwarfs and tastes the liquor . Overwhelmed by the magic of the liquor, he falls into a 20-year sleep. When he wakes up, everything has undergone a tremendous change. From the plot and the character of Rip Van Winkle we can see he escapes from his responsibilities and duties and the contradiction towards work.

Rip Van Winkle, a good-natured man, is always ready to attend to anybody’s business . He has continuous trouble with Dame Van Winkle, who symbols the puritan thoughts, which consider idleness and laziness as evil thing. Rip Van Winkle has to search comfort by wandering with the dog “wolf”. He can’t really get comfort from philosophers in the village. The “despaired” Rip Van Winkle drinks and falls asleep.

Rip van winkle, however, was one of those happy mortals, of foolish, well-oiled dispositions, who take the world easy, eat white bread or brown, whichever can be got with least thought or trouble, and would rather starve on a penny than work for a pond. If left to himself, he would have whistled life away in perfect contentment; but his wife kept continually dinning in his ears about his idleness, his carelessness, and the ruin he was bringing on his family. Morning, noon, and night, his tongue was incessantly going, and every thing he said or did was sure to produce a torrent of household eloquence. Rip had but one way of replying all lectures of the kind, and that, by frequent use, had grown into a habit. He shrugged his shoulders, shook his head, cast up his eyes, but said nothing. This, however, always provoked a fresh volley from his wife, so that he was fain to draw off his forces, and take to the outside of the house——the only side which, in truth, belongs to a hen-pecked husband.

Rip Van winkle
