Report on Fahrenheit 451
Guy Montag is a future fireman, whose job is NOT to put out fire, but to burn books. Living in an era when only superficial levels of entetainment are considered happiness, Montag gradually realizes the emptiness of his life. Influenced by a couple of friends, he starts to read books and to rebel against ignorance. The thesis of this novel is straightforward – knowledge and great ideas should be promoted instead of being banned or feared
The author successfully demonstrates the background of the story by creating detailed narratation and enthralling scenes. During the climax, there is a vividly descripted conversation between Mr. and Mrs. Montag and their friends. In the conversation, Mrs. Phelps says she “heaves her children into the parlour and turns the switch like stuffing clothes into the washing machine and slamming the lid”. Mrs. Bowles votes for a candidate on account of his good look. Most shockingly, Mrs. Phelps states that she isn’t worried about her army husband at war at all. Why, she doesn’t clearly say, but she repeats over and over that she will let her husband do all the worrying as if if she says that enough times, all the bad fourtune will be prevented from happening. In this way the reader gets a reflection of the characters’ cold hearts.
