Living in a Small City May Be Happier
After reading the masterpiece of Theodore Dreiser, Sister Carrie, what I want to say most is that living in a smaller city may be happier. Carrie Meeber was a girl from small town. She was young, charming, beautiful and pure. She was eager for material enjoyment and the life in the big city. She thought that she could find everything she wanted in Chicago and moved there. At first, she experienced a tough time. Then, by chance, she became a famous actress in Broadway. She really got the things she dreamed for, money, career, reputation, and high social status. But she didn’t get a family and she felt lonely. She’s not happy.
In this novel, I see two girls named Carrie. One of them had nothing, but the other had everything. The two different girls gave me different feelings. The one with nothing reminded me of a group of young Chinese people known as “Beijing Floater”. They are also young people who expect to realize their dreams, ambitions and values in big cities and their lives are also not stable. The difference between them and Sister Carrie is that most of them have knowledge and more gracious goals, not just chasing superficial enjoyment. The one with everything reminded me of a sentence. That is “I would rather cry in a BMW than laugh sitting on a bicycle”. I don’t want to simply criticize the people who have such an idea and call them mammonist. After all, we all hope to have enough money to live in decent conditions. But why would the people in a BMW cry? Why would Sister Carrie feel unhappy when she got everything she wanted? I think that’s the point. Maybe they realized this kind of life was not so wonderful as they thought. They got too much pressure from work. They couldn’t tell who their true friends were and who’s just trying to use them. They felt tired of the things they had to do. Anyway, they got too many reasons to complain that this was not what they wanted and they didn’t feel happy.
