The Old Man and the Sea

A Reading Report on "The Old Man and the Sea"

"A man can be destroyed but never defeated."

— "The Old Man and the Sea"

Nowadays, many people may be confused on the true sense of our lives. Some people are eager to succeed and to realize their so-called sense of lives. But they don’t have the courage to face failure, danger and difficulties. Maybe, so do I. However, after I read the famous book "The Old man and the sea", I was shocked by this amazing novel. Because it tells me what the true sense is of our lives: Life itself is an endless pursuit. It is a road long, difficult and full of ups and downs but as long as we have a brave heart to meet the challenges of self-confidence, we will always be a real winner.

The Old Man and the Sea is a fable of an old man’s life that was told by Ernest Hemingway, a famous writer of America. The novel is simple in plot but profound in meaning. This novel gives me a deep impression especially the description about the old man’s braveness and persistence.

The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway

Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961), an American author and journalist. He was part of the 1920s expatriate community in Paris, as well as the veterans of World War One later known as "the Lost Generation", as described in his posthumous memoir A Moveable Feast. A Farewell to Arms (1929) is the best works of “the Lost Generation”.

Hemingway's distinctive writing style is characterized by economy and understatement, in contrast to the style of his literary rival William Faulkner. It had a significant influence on the development of twentieth-century fiction writing. His protagonists are typically stoic men who exhibit an ideal described as "grace under pressure."

The Sun Also Rises,(1926) was his first novel, and he published For Whom the Bell Tolls in 1940. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1953 for The Old Man and the Sea, and the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1954.He published seven novels, six short story collections and two non-fiction works. Three novels, four collections of short stories and three non-fiction works were published posthumously. Many of these are considered classics of American literature. This is a story about an old Fisherman who is named Santiago. He hasn't caught a fish in over 80 days. Santiago is considered "salao", the worst form of unlucky. In fact, he is so unlucky that his young apprentice, Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with the old man and been ordered to fish in a more prosperous boat. Still caring for to the old man, however, the boy visits Santiago's shack each night, hauling back his fishing gear, getting him food and discussing American baseball and his favorite player Joe DiMaggio. Santiago is confident that his unlucky streak will soon come to an end, and he resolves to sail out farther than usual the following day. Thus on the eighty-fifth day, Santiago sails his skiff far onto the Gulf. He prepares his lines and at noon, a big fish, which he knows is a marlin, takes the bait. Unable to pull it in., instead, the fish begins to pull the skiff. Two days and two nights pass in this manner, during which the old man endures constant pain from the fishing

The Old Man and the Sea is one of Hemingway's most enduring works and may very well become one of the true classics of this generation. Hemingway is also one of my

favorite writers. Besides The Old Man And the Sea, I have read some of his other works, such asA Farewell to Arms

But The Old Man and the Sea is the one that left the deepest impression on me.

I extremely admire in the novel the senior fisherman's will, he let me understand one person certainly must have relentless spirit, only then could obtain successfully.

the book described An old man sailed on sea for ages, only to bring back a large colossal marlin skeleton,a worn-out boat, and his exhausted body. In Hemingway’s novel , there is only simple plot, and characters pure as water drops. However, no battle can be more glorious , and no story can be more appealing than it. I firmly refer it to story of hero.
